Teams split in Texas on opening weekend

Dylan Joyce homered for the third time this weekend, and Gio Parascondola hit his first home run of the season as Puget Sound completed its three-game sweep at Whittier Saturday.

The University of Dallas opened their season against Sul Ross State on Saturday. They lost the first game 7-1, and won the second game 10-9 in extra innings to split the doubleheader. After a quiet first inning, the Lobos took the lead in the second when a pair of errors put runners in scoring position. They added to their lead in the fourth inning, bringing in three runs on four straight hits to open the inning. That would be all Sul Ross needed for the win, but they added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth for some insurance, two of those runs coming with two outs. In game 2, the Lobos jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a two-RBI double in the first, but Dallas answered back with a run in the second thanks to an error by the second baseman. Sul Ross built a 8-3 after five innings but the dats came alive for Dallas in the sixth. A two-run shot by Fernando Davila that tied the game up at 8-8. Both teams added a run and the first extra inning games of the DIII season was here. Mike Andersen led off the 10th with a single, and Tyler Darnell moved him over with a sac bunt. Caleb Hohman, with a homer already in the game, was intentionally walked to face Brett Castillo who recorded his third hit of the game and drove in Andersen to give the Crusaders the 10-9 lead. That would be all they needed, as Marcelo Carillo II faced the minimum three batters in the bottom of the 10th, capping off a fantastic performance by the UD bullpen.

Texas Lutheran earned a split of their opening day home doubleheader against 2022 NCAA Tournament qualifier Pacific at Katt-Isbel Field - winning game one, 10-7, before dropping game two, 4-2. In the lid lifter, a five-run seventh inning and six total runs in their final two innings at the plate gave way to a late game rally for TLU as the Bulldogs earned their first victory of the 2023 season. Blade Strzelczyk would come in in relief in the ninth inning - striking out two of the three batters he faced to pick up his first save of the season and the 14th of his career. With 14 career saves, is now eight saves shy of the Texas Lutheran career saves mark held by Sean Kistler and three shy of the SCAC record for career saves held by Brad Henry of Hendrix. In game two, Texas Lutheran scored two runs in the first inning but would ultimately fall 4-2 as the Boxers scored runs in the third, fourth, sixth, and seventh for the come from behind victory.

Puget Sound opened the seaon with three wins over Whittier with a win on Friday and sweeping the Saturday doubleheader 9-5 and 5-2. In the opener, four Loggers collected multiple hits as Puget Sound won the second game of the series at Whittier, 9-5. Brett Harvey earned the win in his first start of the season, working 6.2 innings and striking out six. Cody Hirano, Makana Murashige, Gio Parascondola, and Nathan Blocher eached finished with two hits. In the nightcap, Dylan Joyce hit his third home run of the weekend, and Gia Parascondola cleared the outfield fences for the first time in 2023 as the Loggers completed the three-game sweep with a 5-2 win. Peter Fagan earned the win out of the bullpen, working two shutout innings. Freshman Cal Johnson notched the save by striking out four in two shutout innings.

Linfield walked it off in game one and came up short in game two to split Saturday's doubleheader with Pacific Lutheran at Roy Helser Field. The Wildcats pulled off a ninth inning comeback in the opener, winning 6-5 on a wild pitch that scored Brett Joner from third base. Both teams put up 11 hits in the nightcap, but this time, the Lutes claimed a 6-5 victory and the Opening Weekend series. Transfer shortstop Jake Hoskins collected four hits in the two games while Cage Hardy drove in all but one of the Wildcats' runs in game 2.

Jack Potter and Julian Sanders each had six runs batted in during the doubleheader as Claremont-Mudd-Scripps came from behind twice to win a pair of high scoring games against George Fox, winning the opener 11-10 and taking the second game 13-9 at Biola's Eagles Diamond. With the sweep, CMS opens the year with a 3-0 record, after also taking the series opener yesterday 9-2. The nightcap saw Potter, Sanders and Derek Seneker each hit three-run homers for the Stags in a game that was called due to darkness in the bottom of the eighth. Lucas Welch threw two strong innings of relief to get the win in the opener, striking out four and allowing just one hit. Hamilton Finefrock threw 2.1 innings of one-hit relief to get the win in the capper for the Stags, while Andrew Blackett pitched a scoreless eighth to finish the game off.

Lewis & Clark College earned a doubleheader sweep over host Occidental on Saturday to post the program's first 3-0 start to a season since 2004. For the second-straight day Lewis & Clark used strong starting pitching, a hot start with the bats and a consistent barrage of baserunners to knock off the host Tigers. Sophomore first baseman Will Heron had a huge day for the Pioneers. Heron finished with three hits in both games and posted a line of 6-8 with two runs, four RBI, two walks and a double.

Pomona-Pitzer opened up its season with a sweep against non-conference opponent Whitworth with a 15-5 and a 10-7 win at Alumni Field. With the sweep, the Sagehens start the year 3-0 overall. The Sagehens were led in game one by first-year Donovan Crook who went 3-6 with four RBI and two runs scored. Jackson Fleming, JC Ng, and Isaac Kim had two-hit games. Harry Deliyannis was the game-one starter of the doubleheader and went 4.2 innings with five runs and five strikeouts. Eric Prough came in relief of Deliyannis for 0.1 innings while Enoch Kim picked up the win with one inning pitched. Eddie Rosemont and Ethan Collins finished the game for Pomona-Pitzer with three hits surrendered between the pair and no runs given up. In game two, the Sagehens were led by David Bedrosian who went 3-4 at the dish that included his first home run of the season. Kim also had a multi-hit performance going 2-4 with two runs scored. First-year Hannoh Seo got the ball for game two and went four innings with four hits, three runs and five strikeouts. Jake Albro came in relief and picked up the win with two innings, two runs surrendered and three strikeouts while Landon Carter finished the game with an inning pitched.

Willamette scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning, and closer Brady Joyner registered three strikeouts in the bottom of the inning, as the Bearcats won 3-2 against Redlands in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday. In the second game, Willamette rallied from an early 2-0 deficit and held a 12-5 lead after the top of the eighth inning. Redlands scored six runs with no outs in the bottom of the eighth to cut WU's lead to 12-11, but the game was ended due to darkness. According to NCAA rules, the score of a regulation game that is stopped due to darkness reverts back to the previous inning, so Willamette won 12-5. "It was great to be competing against another team," Willamette Head Baseball Coach Aaron Swick said. "Our guys brought a lot of energy to the field. We got two wins the hard way, but I'm really proud of how we battled through. Jeff Hoffman had a few huge hits. Overall, we had lots of contributions from a number of guys."
