Nichols used a seven-run fifth inning to overcome a five-run deficit to defeat North Carolina Wesleyan in their season opener on Friday afternoon by the score of 10-7. The Bison pick up their first win of the season while handing the Battling Bishops their first loss in their sixth game of the campaign.

Senior catcher Matt Malcom drove in four runs with two home runs and sophomore righty Matthew Wootton won his first career start as No. 2 Eastern Connecticut State won its opening game of the 2023 season with a 10-5 victory over Virginia Wesleyan Friday morning at Perry Field. Eastern (2-0) completed the sweep of Virginia Wesleyan (1-5) with a 13-hit attack in the nightcap that produced an 8-4 win. The first-game win was the program's 24th straight over two years and broke the program's overall record for consecutive wins and was the first in the head coaching career of first-year Eastern head coach Mike Odenwaelder, a former assistant at Dartmouth College. Last year's team tied the season record of 23 straight wins during its historic run to the national title.

Backed by a strong pitching performance and some timely hitting in the early innings, Rochester pulled off an early season upset, defeating 6th-ranked Marietta 4-1 at the D3 Baseball Showcase at Atrium Health Park. The win levels Rochester's record on opening day to 1-1 as the Yellowjackets dropped an 8-7 decision earlier in the day to Christopher Newport. Marietta also moves to 1-1 on the season. Overall, a trio of pitchers held the typically stout Pioneers offense to just five hits and one run, which was unearned on the day. Nolan Sparks, Thomas Blaydes and Mark Aaronson combined to also strikeout 13 Marietta hitters on the day. Forced to play from behind for the first time this season, Christopher Newport trailed by as many as five runs before storming back to capture an 8-7 walk-off win over Rochester (0-1) on Friday morning in the D3 Showcase. The Captains improved to 8-0 overall this season with the dramatic finish, which was capped by a game-winning RBI single off the bat of freshman Josh Reinhold in the bottom of the ninth. In the late game Denison defeated Berry 6-5

Washington College started play in the 2023 Bison
Baseball Classic on the campus of Gallaudet. The
Shoremen played two contests with first against
Gallaudet. The Shoremen used 21 hits to cruise past
the hosts 19-5. In the second game of the day,
Washington took on the RIT. Both teams pitching
started strong before the Tigers plated three runs
apiece in the fifth and sixth innings. The Shoremen
continued to struggled offensively the rest of the way,
dropping the contest 10-1.

Johns Hopkins kicked off the 2023 season with two games in the Baltimore Invitational and were poised to get off to a hot start to open up the campaign. They defeated Cortland 6-0 and then prevailed over Wittenberg 10-3. In their season opener, JHU used a five run second inning to jump out to a 5-0 lead that they would not surrender for the rest of the game. Gabriel Romano tossed six shut out innings in his Blue Jay debut to earn the win. JHU launched four homers to erase an early deficit and come away with a 10-3 victory over Wittenberg. Four Blue Jay pitchers combined to limit the Tigers offense and coast to the win. Cortland returning in the evening to defeat Transylvania University, 13-1 as the Red Dragons Cortland broke the game open with two more three-spots in the seventh and eighth innings.

Maryville slugged its way to victory on Friday night, taking down Hanover 16-5 at Scotland Yard. The Scots recorded 17 hits in the seven-inning matchup. All nine MC starters picked up at least one knock, with seven recording multiple hits. Shortstop Jacob Johnston led the squad going 3-for-4 with two doubles, a walk, and a team-high four runs scored. Maryville's power surge continued, as the Scots picked up two home runs in the contest. MC now has 10 home runs in just seven games.

Oneonta headed south for its season-opening weekend, first playing Eastern Mennonite in a doubleheader on Friday afternoon. The Royals (2-7) took the first game 15-7, while the Red Dragons (1-1) won the second game 6-4. In the first game, the Royals brought in five runs in the bottom of the first. They lost a bit of control of the game but the momentum swung back to the Royals in the fifth, with Eastern Mennonite pouring on six runs while Oneonta made three errors. Oneonta faired better in the second game, totaling ten hits with just one error.

Penn State Altoona started its 2023 season schedule with a doubleheader split against non-conference opponent Bridgewater College on Friday. Bridgewater (1-6) rallied for a big 19-9 win in game one, before Penn State Altoona (1-1) pulled off a comeback of its own to take game two 5-3. Penn State Altoona held a 6-3 lead through five innings and a 6-4 advantage through six, but Bridgewater upended the Lions with a 12-run bottom of the seventh, as the Eagles prevailed by 10 runs in game one of the doubleheader. Penn State Altoona came back from a one-run deficit in the seventh inning, scoring three runs to overtake the Eagles' lead and salvage a split in the doubleheader.

Case Western Reserve junior Reece Marley struck out eight batters in six innings and junior first baseman Zack Carinci and first-year centerfielder Matt Trout combined for seven runs batted in, as the Spartans rolled to a 10-1 win over Chicago in their season-opening game at Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana on Friday afternoon. Marley allowed just one run on three hits and a walk in the outing to earn the win. His eight strikeouts in the game were a career-high for the southpaw. Trout finished his college debut three-for-five with a triple, four RBI, and two runs scored. Carinci added a two-for-five performance with three runs batted in and a walk, and senior catcher Jack Anderson was three-for-four with a run, a double, and two stolen bases. Sophomore designated hitter Jay Smith and senior shortstop Trey Haley each added two hits in the game, as CWRU finished the game with 13 total hits.

A day after notching 26 hits, Montclair State tallied 20 en route to a 22-5 triumph over McDaniel Friday. During the two-game series, Montclair State (2-0) outscored McDaniel 47-8. Joe Gisonda went 4-for-6 in his first start of the year as Xander Nabors went 3-for-3 with a career-high four RBI. Peter Cosentino matched Nabors with four runs batted in as McLoughlin crossed the plate three times. Matt Pontari won in relief, tossing three innings with six strikeouts. The sophomore allowed two runs on three hits.

No 13 Webster kicked off their season this evening when they traveled to Birmingham, Alabama, to take on the Depauw Tigers in the Birmingham-Southern College Classic. The Gorloks defeated the Tigers by a final score of 16-5 to improve to 1-0 on the season. With the loss, Depauw falls to 1-2 on the year. The Gorloks put together eight hits in the contest and took advantage of six defensive mistakes from the Tigers. Alek Elges (1-0) had an outstanding outing in his first game of the season as he allowed just four hits and one earned run while striking out six in 6.0 innings pitched. Adam Hill, Caleb Zbrozek, Ryan LaPlante, and Mason Young pitched in relief of Elges as the four combined to allow three hits and three earned runs while striking out three batters. Parker Wielt led the way for the Gorloks at the plate as he went 2-for-3 with four runs scored and an RBI.

Déjà vu all over again. No. 21 Shenandoah recorded a pair of 6-5 walkoff victories over Lebanon Valley Friday afternoon. Shenandoah (6-0) rallied from a 4-2 deficit with three runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh to win game one, and then erased a 5-3 seventh-inning deficit with three runs in its last at-bat to complete the sweep over the Dutchmen (0-2). In the opener, Kyle Lisa delivered the game-winning hit in the seventh by beating out a two-out groundball to deep short. Trailing 5-3 in the nightcap, Kooper Anderson led off the SU seventh with a walk before scoring on Frankie Ritter's triple to left. Horning then brought the game back to level with a single to left to bring home Ritter. A Colby Martin sacrifice moved Horning into scoring position, and after Pearce Bucher was intentionally walked, pinch hitter Tyler Blittersdorf doubled to left to bring home Horning with the game-winning run.

Concordia-Texas used an all-around team effort to down UMHB 4-2 in the conference opener. Pitchers Otto Franz and Brady Staedtler posted five strikeouts and no runs each inside Gardner-Boggs Field on Friday. CTX broke a tie in the bottom of the fourth with a sacrifice fly by Kalen Clark to score Brandon Goynes. Concordia added three more runs in the frame as Chris Morrow, Zach Seigrist and Landon Hyle scored with RBIs from Hyle and EJ Sanchez. As action progressed, neither team would plate anymore runners as Brady Staedtler impressed with five strikeouts in three innings pitched. Down to their last three outs, the Crusaders posted a pair of runs on a two-out, RBI double. The Tornados would ultimately go on to victory with Noah Kelley striking out the final batter for the save.

Alfred State won today's game against Elmira 9-2. The Pioneers gave up both runs in the first inning, and didn't allow a runner to cross the plate the rest of the game. After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, Chris Mattoon threw 5 shutout innings to keep Alfred State in the game, eventually earning the win. Mattoon finished with 8 punch out's, 2 earned runs and allowed 7 hits. A 7-run fifth inning gave the Pioneers the lead, which they held the rest of the way. With all seven runs coming with two outs, the Pioneers nearly batted around with 8 consecutive hitters reaching base. Elmira lost to SUNY New Platz 17-5 earlier in the day.

Marymount picked up their third win in a row on Friday afternoon, taking down the Bulldogs of DeSales in shutout fashion, 5-0. Craig Sodano had a big day at the plate for the Saints, knocking a solo homer in the fourth frame. He had an RBI single earlier in the game to finish the day with two hits and two RBI. David Muirhead shoved in his second start of the season, finishing the day with 7.2 innings pitched with 12 strikeouts, allowing just one hit.

Fontbonne returned home for a three-game stretch opening with a 10-5 win over Wheaton (Ill.). The Griffins wasted no time getting on the board in the first with Matt Helm bringing home Eric Creech and Colby Shivers on a single to left giving Fontbonne the 2-0 lead. The Thunder plated a run in the third and tacked on three more in the fourth taking a 4-2 lead. However, that advantage was short-lived with Fontbonne scoring five runs on five hits. Creech, Ty Kueper, and Kameron Brooks (two) each brought home at least one RBI in the inning. The Griffins added another run in the fifth on an RBI groundout from Shivers that scored Thomas Purschke, who led off with a walk. In the sixth, the Griffins extended its lead out to 9-4 when Grant Staffen hit a two out RBI double to left scoring Ty Kueper. The Thunder scored a run in the seventh, but Fontbonne got it back in the eighth on an RBI single from Jack Wood giving Fontbonne the 10-5 victory.

No. 19 Ithaca pounded out 17 hits, including three home runs, to open the 2023 season with a 16-8 victory at Immaculata University on Friday. The Bomber got off to the best start imaginable, as IC scored seven runs on eight hits in the top of the first inning. In the game, Garrett Callaghan and Louis Fabbo each collected three hits, while Connor Pedersen and Ethan Rothstein each had two. Colin Leyner tossed 3.0 innings and struck out five batters, while Bo Nicholson earned his first collegiate win in 3.0 innings of relief. Dan Kellachan tossed two innings and Sean Kelly wrapped up the game with a scoreless ninth.

Facing a 3-1 deficit, Castleton used a four-run seventh inning, highlighted by Hunter Perkins' third career blast, to hand Mary Washington its first loss of the season, 7-3, Friday afternoon. Outfielders Jesus Cardenas and Kannon Dush led the Spartans (2-2) with two hits and one stolen base apiece. Reece de Castro walloped his ninth career homer, a solo shot to leadoff the contest, while Perkins left the yard for the first time this season to plate the game's winning runs. De Castro and Tyler McLain finished the squad's opening week with hits in each of the four matchups. Aubrey Ramey started on the mound and enjoyed his best performance in three seasons, striking out a career-high nine with one walk in five innings. Earning the Spartans' first save of 2023, Brayden Howrigan fanned three UMW (4-1) hitters in the final two innings.

Drew struck for seven runs over the first three innings en route to a 9-3 victory over Saint Elizabeth at FDU-Florham on Friday as part of the Madison Avenue Challenge. The Rangers (3-1) won their third straight game while the Eagles lost their season opener. Senior Giovanni DeGiglio started on the mound for the Rangers and worked 5 1/3 innings to pick up the win. He allowed just three hits and struck out while yielding just one run, improving to 2-0 on the season. Sophomore Ryan Jones led Drew at the plate, finishing 3-for-4.

Cabrini used an eight-run first inning Friday afternoon to rout Rosemont 15-1 in seven innings at Cabrini Carroll Field as the game was called before the top of the eighth due to darkness. In the bottom half of the first, after a scoreless top half from starter Jordan Silvestri, the Cavaliers (2-1) put up eight runs on just three hits with the big blow being a bases clearing double from Pat Toal. Cavaliers pitching held the Ravens hitless through six innings as Rosemont did not break into the hit column until the top of the seventh. In his first start of the year, Silvestri went just two innings with no runs and no hits. Allen Yager and James Mercante followed suit with two innings apiece as Yager recorded one punchout while Mercante had four. The offense put up 15 runs on 14 hits as Zack Brook finished the day 2-for-4 with three RBIs while Pat Toal went 2-for-5 also driving in three.

Carter Amarantos had a grand slam and six RBIs to lead LeTourneau to a 13-8 victory in game one of Friday's doubleheader at Ozarks in Clarksville. Ozarks took game two, 16-0. It was the ASC opener for both LeTourneau (5-4, 1-1 ASC) and Ozarks (2-8, 1-1 ASC). LeTourneau used a six-run fifth inning to open up the game before coasting to a 13-8 win in the series opener. Amarantos went 2-for-3 with a grand slam to go with his six RBIs and two runs scored. In game two, Ozarks' bats got hot as the hosts scored 15 runs over a three-inning stretch from the third through fifth innings to even the series after a 16-0 win.

Brevard (6-3) defeated Northern Vermont-Lyndon (1-4) 7-1 and 16-2 in a doubleheader featuring two seven-inning contests on Friday afternoon at Gil Coan Field. With the doubleheader win, the Tornados swept the three-game series over the Hornets. Brevard outscored the visitors from Northern Vermont – Lyndon 23-3 in the doubleheader and 33-7 in the three-game series. Junior Trenten Anderson (1-2) started game one on the mound for the Tornados and went on to earn his first win of the season in a strong performance. Anderson pitched a complete six innings, allowing one run on just four hits and striking out six Hornet batters. With a series sweep in their sights, the Tornados delivered an emphatic 16-2 victory in game two of the twin bill. Bryce Bowers (1-0) earned the win following a stellar starting performance, going 6.0 innings and allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits to go along with six strikeouts and just one walk.

Senior pitcher Shaun Gamelin dominated in his first collegiate start as Rhode Island College defeated Southwestern, 4-2, in the team's season opener on Friday night. Cal Parrillo went 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI. McElroy knocked in two runs in his collegiate debut, while Santerre swiped four bags. Shaun Gamelin was outstanding on the mound, getting a win (1-0) in his first career start for the Anchormen. He punched out 10 batters, while only allowing two runs on two hits. Junior pitcher Terry Murray (Norfolk, Mass.) came on in the eighth inning, closing the door and earned a six-out save (1).

The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets won their first conference match up 8-4 in game one of the three game series against the McMurry War Hawks this Friday afternoon. Catcher Rylee McGee and right fielder Tanner Benson led the Yellow Jackets at the plate each going 2-for-4 with two RBI. Brendan Read took the win (1-1) as the starting pitcher for the Jackets, pitching 6.0 innings with a career high seven strikeouts in one game, and only allowing two runs. Bryant Chambers stepped in for the save, pitching the remaining 3.0 innings, with two strikeouts, and only allowing two runs.

Stockton (2-0) opened the 2023 season in a big way, as the Ospreys downed Penn College (0-2) in a doubleheader by scores of 3-2 (7 inn.) and 11-1 on Friday afternoon. Freshman Kevin Novobilsky led the team with four hits and three runs on the day. Senior Mike Schiattarella took the hill in the first game and struck out 12 in six innings of work before giving way to transfer Reece Miller. Miller tossed a scoreless final frame for his first save as an Osprey to seal the 3-2 win. The nightcap saw some more firsts for the young Ospreys in the blowout victory. With the game scoreless again through three innings, Stockton blasted back-to-back home runs by Kaplan and freshman C.J. Fredericks. It was the first round-trippers for both players at Stockton. A pair of freshmen hurlers combined on the mound for the victory. Stephen DeMilio started and threw the first six innings allowing four hits and striking out two as he posted his first collegiate victory. Antonio Sansone came on the finish the game, surrendering just two hits, with six strikeouts, in three innings of work for his first career save.

of the seventh to claim 4-3 win. However, three
multi-run frames by the Red and White allowed the
visitors to walk away from game two with a 10-5
victory to salvage a split over the Maroons at Salem
Memorial Ballpark.

Hardin-Simmons defeated defending league champion Texas-Dallas 5-3 in the American Southwest Conference opener on Friday at UTD Field in Richardson. Colby Seltzer started a big day with an RBI double in the first inning for the Cowboys. Seltzer also gave the Cowboys an insurance run in the ninth inning with a solo home run. He finished the day 4-for-5 to lead the Cowboy offense. Keagan Vance had three hits to pace UTD. Caidon Livingston had another strong outing on the mound for the Cowboys. He went six and two-third innings and allowed just three runs on eight hits and struck out four to move to 2-1 on the year. Caleb Smith allowed just one hit over two and -third innings of relief to pick up the save.

Swarthmore opened the season with a 15-4 offensive explosion against Lycoming College on Friday afternoon. Kirk Terada-Herzer and Austin Burgess led the way with 2 RBI and a double, respectively. Terada-Herzer and Matthew Silvestre both had a team-high three hits on the afternoon as the Garnet tallied 15 hits as a team. Matteo Sollecito tossed two hitless innings for the Garnet, while surrendering just one unearned run in his season debut. Joshua Rankey also pitched three innings of one-run baseball, while Jack Bowling was sensational in three shutout innings. Bowling struck out seven of the 10 batters he faced in his return to the mound.

Asbury (3-2) scored 11 runs on 15 hits to take an 11-5 win in game one on Friday over MSJ (1-1), then fell in game two to MSJ, 3-19. Ethan Cartwright went 4-6 on the day with a double, RBI, and two runs scored. Kaden Dugle produced three RBIs, three hits, three runs scored, and a double all in game one of the day. Matthew Baker followed Dugle with a three-hit game of his own in game one, driving in two Asbury runs as well. Noah Brown and Jackson Cole both had two hits in game one. Cole not only had two hits in game one but got the start on the mound and went five complete innings with four earned runs, three strikeouts, and only one walk. MSJ answered Asbury's convincing game one win with 13 hits of their own in game two, including a grand slam.

Opening up American Southwest Conference making a statement, No. 24 East Texas Baptist had 31 hits and 35 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Sul Ross State. It was a 13-1 win in game one and then a 22-4 victory in game two. ETBU is now 4-4 on the year and 2-0 in the ASC. Sayers Collins and Cole Godkin each received a win combining for 16 strikeouts. Collins had nine in the first game and Godkin seven in the second. Matthew Irwin recorded two strikeouts while Hayden Robichaux had one. ETBU recorded four home runs as Ben Lea and Brett Wagner each recorded two. There was also five doubles and 11 stolen bases.

Greenville controlled Friday's home opener against Illinois Wesleyan, handling the Titans 10-0 in a shortened seven-inning game. The Panthers took an early lead with single runs in the first two innings, and Greenville exploded for five runs in the fourth inning to put the game out of reach. Greenville tacked on two runs in the fifth inning, and the game ended in the seventh when a wild pitch scored Greenville's 10th run. Drew Frey was active on the bases all afternoon for the Panthers. He had a leadoff double, reached base safely two other times, and scored three runs. Landon Mokris was the team's leading producer in the middle of the order. Mokris went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI, including a two run single in the fourth inning. Every Panther in the batting order recorded a hit. Starting pitcher Luke Fleener had his second stellar outing on the mound. He three six scoreless innings and only allowed four hits. He walked one, hit three batters, and struck out three.

Earlham began its 2023 season with a win on opening day in Sadler Stadium with a 12-10 score against Olivet. Freshman Hayden Scalf earned the win with 3.2 innings pitched in relief. Scarf recorded seven strikeouts with only three hits on 71 pitches. Jacob Renner earned the save by coming in the ninth inning with two strikeouts. Max Fries recorded five RBI on two hits, including a bases-clearing double in the seventh inning to secure the win for the Quakers. Freshman Mac Moore scored an RBI bunt and two stolen bases. The Quakers trailed 6-0 in the middle of the fourth inning and started on the comeback trail. Trailing by one, the Comets walked five straight Earlham batters to tie the game at six. Michael Medley reached home on a passed ball to give EC the lead, and Moore brought home a run with a bunt for a single. With the bases loaded, Fries poked a double into deep center field to clear the Earlham runners home to lead 12-6. The Comets scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning, but were shut out by Renner in the ninth.

St. Thomas (Texas) won 3-0, defeating Belhaven under the lights at Reckling Park this Friday night. Despite eight scoreless innings of offense, the Celts came up victorious powered by Landon Murray's stellar pitching and a Dillon McKee walk-off home run. It was a defensive duel from the first pitch. After a scoreless top of the ninth, it looked like extra innings were on deck for the Celts. Two outs opened the home half of the ninth, then Belhaven walked two consecutive St. Thomas batters. Down to their last out, Dillon Mckee answered the call. McKee hit a three run shot to left field to secure St. Thomas' second walk off the season and 3-0 victory. Landon Murray continued his hot streak notching the ninth win of his Celt Career. Murray went eight shutout innings allowing just three hits and two walks. He also struck out seven batters. Luke Sebesta came in relief of Murray and blanked Belhaven in the top of the ninth. Sebesta threw a quick 13 pitch inning allowing no hits.

Penn State Harrisburg opened the 2023 campaign with a doubleheader split with Ferrum on Friday night, Feb. 24. The Lions came up just short in a 14-13 setback in the opener but responded with a 14-8 victory in the finale. The Lions (0-1) battled back from a pair of multi-run deficits and pulled ahead on two separate occasions but couldn't close it out in their season opener, falling 14-13 to the hometown Panthers (3-2) in the first game of a twin bill on Friday evening. Penn State Harrisburg (1-1) bounced back from a game one loss to earn the doubleheader split with a 14-8 victory over Ferrum (3-3) in the nightcap on Friday evening.

Westminster (Mo.) started their down in Jackson, Mississippi as they are taking part in the Millsaps Baseball Classic. They started their season Friday evening against Edgewood from Madison, Wisconsin. The Eagles would take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Blue Jays would tie the game 2-2 in the bottom of the third inning. Then the offense would explode for twelve more runs and propelled the Blue Jays to the 14-2 win to start the season. A lot of Blue Jays got it done at the plate with Matt Lukins leading the way going five for five from the dish, scoring four runs, and also getting an RBI. Steven Diaz got off to a hot start to his senior year, we would go three for five with a walk, a double, and a triple, driving in two runs.

Carroll finished its season-opening three-game road trip on a high note by winning a nonconference doubleheader versus Berea College on Friday, claiming the first game 7-4 and the second 7-6. It was the first series victory of the early season for Carroll, which improved to 2-1 overall with the resilient effort. Joey Appino, a freshman center fielder from Loves Park, Ill., went a combined 6-for-12 with two triples, four runs scored and two RBIs in making his career debut for the Pioneers. Carroll combined for 27 hits in the series and showcased its defensive skills by finishing with only two errors.
