Late runs gives Wartburg win

Wartburg defeated Albion 4-2 on Tuesday after the Knights rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth inning. Wartburg are now winners of back-to-back games and move to 2-3 overall. Wartburg's offense came alive in the top of the fifth when Will Armstrong singled and Keaton Gray doubled to put runners in scoring position. Down a run in the top of the ninth both Wessling and Gray got on base to start the inning and then a Andrews double down the line scored both runs. Zach Walton singled to score Andrews and the Knights led 4-2 heading to the final frame. Armstrong closed the game on the mound with two strikeouts to earn the win.


Emory ran its winning streak to four games on Tuesday, defeating Rose-Hulman, 7-2, in a midweek matchup at Chappell Park in Atlanta. Senior Ellis Schwartz continued his hot hitting, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored while junior Tyler McLoughlin went 2-for-4 with another mammoth home run. On the mound, senior Aaron Mishoulam was outstanding with seven shutout frames to earn his first win of the season. He struck out eight while walking one and allowing three hits, all singles. The Eagles scored early and often, manufacturing five runs across the first four innings to lead 5-0. Emory later tacked on another run to its lead in the seventh before Rose-Hulman ended the shutout bid in the eighth. McLoughlin would round out the Eagles scoring with his second home run of the year, launching a no-doubter over the left center fence in the home half of the inning.

Washington & Jefferson used a RBI single by catcher Sam Schuster Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference game at Ross Memorial Park. The box score filled up quickly for both units. Scoring for both offenses would soon go cold for both sides after plenty of missed opportunities around the diamond. Neither team was able to score over the next five innings as the game entered the latter stages knotted at 2-2. W&J would finally break the ice when Schuster singled home Joe Lehner in the bottom of the eighth. W&J made sure to finish the job as Ethan Boring retired the side in order in the ninth inning for his first collegiate save.

Texas Lutheran scored nine unanswered runs to rally for a 9-5 win over Mary Hardin-Baylor on Tuesday at Red Murff Field in Belton, Texas. The Bulldogs (4-7) scored four runs in the sixth to tie the game up before scoring four more runs in the ninth to complete the comeback victory over the Crusaders. Texas Lutheran knotted the game up with a four run top of the sixth courtesy of the grand slam from Niko Garcia. Garcia went 1-for-2 with a grand slam, the first home run of his collegiate career. Tyler Post went 2-for-5 with a three-run homer. Freshman Mason Goudeau, making his first collegiate start, went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Diego Vinton pitched the final five innings and earned the win, shutting out the Crusaders while striking out seven and only allowing one hit.

Dubuque continued their hot streak to open the season picking up their fifth straight victory on Tuesday 11-2 over the Cardinals of St. Mary's (Minn.). In the top of the fifth, the Spartans would fly out the first two outs. Hunter Hicks would then walk followed by a single from George Pavlopoulos to have runners on first and second. Daniel Maller would then draw a walk which would lead to a big hit from Allen has he tripled to score all three runners on base opening the game up for a 9-2 Spartans lead. With the game in hand, the Spartans would add runs in the seventh and ninth innings winning by a final score of 11-2.

Neumann used four multi-run innings to earn a 10-1 win
over the Eastern University Eagles on Tuesday afternoon.

Cabrini split its doubleheader Tuesday as the Cavaliers dropped their first game of the day 12-4 to Manchester but responded with an 11-1 win over Eastern in their second game of the afternoon. Manchester jumped on Cabrini starter Dom Marotta from the get-go as the Spartans scored three runs in the top of the first. In the fourth, MU tacked on two more with another in the fifth and then a five-run seventh led to an 11-0 Cavaliers deficit. This was too big a hill to climb for Cabrini to mount a comeback. The second game of the day for the Cavaliers began with two runs in the first off of an Eagles miscue and then a six-run fourth highlighted by two-run homers from Ryan Dipper and Zack Brook made it an 8-0 Cavaliers lead after four. In the eighth, with the Cavs up 10-0, senior Christian Strickland doubled home Sean Glatts for Cabrini's 11th run of the ballgame. The real story of the day was Cabrini starter Jordan Silvestri. The sophomore right-hander went 8 and 1/3 innings against the Eagles, allowing one unearned run on just four hits with seven punch outs. Senior Allen Yager came on in relief to get the final two outs of the contest.

Lynchburg continued its hot start to the 2023 season in a close one on the road against William Peace Tuesday. The 13th-ranked Hornets bested the Pacers 11-10. Senior pitcher Wesley Arrington allowed four hits and one earned run through 2.1 innings in his first start of the season. The Hornet's defense was shaky at the start but they received some help from WPU. Despite only two hits in the 2nd inning, Lynchburg scored seven runs drawing two walks and three hit-by-pitches. More walks, with the bases loaded in the 5th gave the Hornets a 10-9 lead. With the score tied in the 9th, graduate student Cameron Lane drew a pinch-hit walk and was driven home by an infield base hit from preseason All-American Avery Neaves.

A 10-run explosion in the top of the seventh by the Houghton Highlanders turned a 1-1 game into a victory over the John Jay Bloodhounds, 12-4, for their third consecutive victory. In the top of the seventh, the Highlanders unloaded for 10 runs on nine hits, including four for extra bases, putting them up, 11-1. The Blooodhounds avoided the 10-run rule by plating two runs in the bottom half of the inning, and the two teams each scored an additional run to finish the game. Houghton starter Will Tormey received a no-decision after tossing five innings and allowing only one run on five hits and three walks, striking out three. Tyler Gibson picked up his first collegiate win with a scoreless sixth inning.

Andrew Klingenstein and Carter Amarantos combined for five RBIs and LeTourneau picked up a midweek road win at Austin, 8-6, on Tuesday night in Sherman. The win splits the season series between LeTourneau (7-4) and Austin College (2-2). Both games ended with the same 8-6 score. LeTourneau scored six runs over the first two innings and used a plethora of relievers to hold down the host Roos and take the road win. The YellowJackets only had eight hits in the contest, but took advantage of Austin College mistakes to open up a 6-1 lead after two innings.

A Colton Perkins three-run blast and 2.1 innings of scoreless work from Eli Wilder to gain his first career-win led Asbury over Kentucky State on Tuesday night in Wilmore, Ky., 9-6. Perkins has now hit three home runs in his last two games at home with nine RBIs. The blast over the left-center wall came after Kentucky State had scored five straight to tie the game at 5-5, giving Asbury the 8-5 lead they did not let up. Junior right handed pitcher Eli Wilder went 2.1 innings to receive his first career win as an Eagle. Wilder gave up one hit and two walks, striking out three in his seven outs. Freshman Cayden Devine got the final four outs for AU, coming in with two outs and the bases loaded in the eighth for a key strikeout. Devine gave up only one hit and one run with two strikeouts.

Calvin jumped in front early and never looked back on the way to a 15-6 win over Franklin. The Knights sent 10 batters to the plate in the top of the first and knocked out Franklin starting pitcher Damian Tillie after 0.1 innings on the way to five runs in the frame. Seven of the first eight batters in the first inning reached base, with Matt Raymond starting the scoring with an RBI-double and Matt Reynolds following with a two-run single. The bats kept rolling through the Franklin bullpen, scoring five more runs in the fourth. The Grizzlies were able to get on the board for six runs in the late innings, but the Calvin bullpen got through the final four innings to secure the win. The early runs were more than enough for freshman starting pitcher Alex Owen, who didn't allow a hit through his first four innings and pitched 5.0 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts and only two hits allowed to move to 1-0 on the season.

Centre played its first road game of the year and cruised to a run rule victory over the Berea Mountaineers, winning 14-4 in seven innings. Centre got off to a hot start, putting up five runs in the first frame. Berea scored four times in the fourth, and then things finally quieted down for a few innings before the Centre bats got hot once again in the seventh to make it 14-4. Ethan McGriff worked a 1-2-3 seventh inning to seal the deal for the Colonels. The Colonels finished with 13 hits to get their 14 runs on the night. Josh Cunningham went a perfect 5-5 at the plate and scored four times. He also picked up three of Centre's five stolen bases for the game.

Birmingham-Southern extended their win streak to eight games after a dominate 11-3 win over Covenant on Tuesday. Carter Tyus got the start of the Panthers and pitched three innings, allowing three runs while striking out one. As the Panthers went to their bullpen the BSC pitching staff struck out 10 over the final six innings of play. Luke Jones struck out five over his 2.1 innings of work. Eli Steadman and Ian Hancock led the Panthers each recording two hits in the contests. The duo combined to drive in four runs while also scoring three times. Andrew Dutton also had a solid day at the plate going 1-for-2 with three walks and four runs scored in the midweek win. A back and forth game saw the Panthers break the game open in the middle innings as the Panthers outscored the Scots 5-0 in the middle frames. BSC then proceeded to outscore Covenant 3-0 over the final three frames to win 11-3.

No. 4 LaGrange (6-2) overcame an early deficit and blew out visiting Adrian (1-3) by a 12-3 score in an NCAA Division III game on Tuesday. An early Bulldog 3-0 lead would be shortlived as the Panthers came right back with five runs on six hits to take a 5-3 lead. LC would then add on in in the middle innings. Senior third baseman Joe Rut laced a two-RBI double in the seventh and single and fielder's choice put the finishing touches on the eventual 12-3 victory. Noah Preuer led the way for the Panthers as he went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, two runs scored and a double and junior outfielder Rhett Mixon was 3-for-5 with a walk and a pair of runs. Eduardo Peralta delivered his third straight strong start, throwing 5.1 innings and allowing three runs – none earned – while striking out an impressive 10. He moves to 3-0 on the year.

Four players turned in multiple-hit outings to support a seven-pitcher, six-strikeout performance in non-conference play for McMurry as they defeated dallas 8-6. The War Hawks, giving first-year head coach Josh Lee his first home victory at the helm, battled back from a 6-4 deficit midway through the clash on a near-perfect evening weather-wise at Walt Driggers Field. Freshman first baseman Noah Hamel drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. A second run was plated due to an infield error by the University of Dallas in the bottom of the fifth to tie the contest at 6-6. An inning later, junior catcher Drake Warner lined a shot off the right-center field wall, sending in two scores with a triple that gave the Maroon and White an 8-6 advantage.That lead managed to stand up behind the steady bullpen work of sophomore Titus Ashton, freshman Jerek Pena, and sophomore Dalton Enberg. The trio wasn't touched for a hit, didn't allow a free pass, and struck out one Crusader hitter between them to make a winner out of sophomore Grayson Winter.
