RMC comes out on top in Top 25 clash on Wednesday

Junior outfielder Logan Clark hit his first collegiate home run – a grand slam – that powered a seven-run inning for Brevard (8-4), as BC defeated Piedmont (6-3) 10-8 on Wednesday afternoon at Loudermilk Field in Demorest, Georgia. Senior right-hander Cam Furman was dominant, tossing six scoreless innings with three hits and four strikeouts, and the Yellow Jackets scored in each of the final five inningsas the 23rd-ranked Randolph-Macon baseball team blanked No. 18 Christopher Newport 6-0 on Wednesday afternoon. Furman walked one and coaxed eight ground balls in raising his record to 2-0. Sophomore Sam Slevin tossed a scoreless eighth, working around a hit and a walk with one strikeout. Sophomore Bere Bauers worked the final two innings with one hit and two strikeouts to preserve the shutout. RMC recorded its third shutout of the young season.

Marymount hit the road to Hood on Wednesday, taking on the Blazers in non-conference action. Behind strong pitching and timely hitting, the Saints won 4-3, moving to 4-2 on the season. Hood evened up the score in the bottom of the ninth to send the game into extras, but the Saints battled and pushed across a run in the top of the tenth with a Chad Singleton single. The Saints threw up a zero in the bottom of the tenth to take the win.

The Fontbonne win streak has reached four after a 5-4 (10 inn.) win over Illinois College. The Blueboys tied the game in the eighth and threatened in the ninth with the bases loaded and nobody out. However, Nick Glaser got the final three outs capped off by King striking out swinging to force extra innings. In the 10th, Ty Kueper led off with a walk and Trey Kueper was hit-by-pitch. After a double play and a passed ball, the Griffins grabbed a 5-4 lead with Thomas Purschke reaching base on a Blueboys error allowing Ty Kueper to score. In the bottom half of the 10th, the Blueboys got the tying run on second with two outs, however Glaser closed the door getting the final batter to ground out for the win.

Delaware Valley hit two home runs and overcame an early deficit to earn a 4-2 road triumph at Swarthmore College, and give head coach Kyle Fleming his first NCAA victory. Orion Fraley made his first collegiate appearance on the mound in relief to get the win. First-year Nick Covolus earned a two-inning save for the Aggies after allowing one run on no hits and one error over the final two innings. It was the first career save for Covolus as he made his NCAA debut. DelVal had seven hits in the game including a 2-for-3 effort from Jonathon Drews. DelVal handed the Garnet their first loss of the season as they fell to 2-1.

Washington & Jefferson racked up 10 hits and walked 18 times in a 13-7 victory over the La Roche Redhawks Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference game at Ross Memorial Park. The Presidents scored in seven of the eight innings they batted. W&J has scored double-digit runs in three of its five games this season. Scott Zaas headlined the Presidents in the hit category with going 3-for-6 on the night with four RBI.

Crown faced off against the Hamline Pipers for their first contests of the season at U.S. Bank Stadium. The Polars topped the Pipers 4-1 and 17-5 in two seven inning contests. The first of two started out even with only four total hits through the first 4 innings. Hamline would notch the first run of the game in the bottom of the 5th inning. Crown struggled to get the bats going until their final at bats in the top of the 7th inning when a leadoff single from Ashton Long sparked a four run rally. The second of two seven inning games was a much different story than the first with twenty-three total runs scored. Cael Magill led the weekend offensively with 5 hits going 5-8 in two games.

Junior Tillman Butler had two hits while knocking in two, to lead Hampden-Sydney to a 6-3 non-conference home win over William Peace on Wednesday afternoon on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Senior Ryan Boyce drove in one on two hits for the Tigers (6-1), while sophomore Grayson Harris added a hit and RBI. Senior Ryan Portes got the win in relief, throwing two innings, allowing one hit, and striking out one and senior Tymothy Hart got the save, striking out two of the three batters he faced. H-SC scored six runs on nine hits with three errors … scoring one run in the second, two in the third, and three in the fifth. William Peace scored three runs on five hits with one error … scoring two runs in the fourth and one run in the eighth.

Gettysburg plated eight runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally and defeat Lebanon Valley, 11-9. Tristan Neels led the Bullets with a three-run home run in the seventh inning that broke an 8-all deadlock. David Prezuiso went 3-for-4 with three runs scored. James Wheedon got the start on the mound, striking out five in 3 2/3 innings but did not factor in the decision. Anthony Dadio picked up in first collegiate win with a scoreless inning of relief work. Tyler Lizell pitched the eighth to pick up the save.

Eureka rolled to a 12-0 victory over Knox in seven innings on a beautiful opening day at Henry Sand Field on Wednesday. Pitchers Nathan Garard, Mike Dunne and Ryan Bredeson combined for a three-hit shutout, racking up 14 strikeouts along the way. Dunne, a sophomore transfer from Lincoln Land Community College, recorded the win in his Red Devil debut. He took over for Garard in the fourth and threw three hitless innings while notching seven strikeouts and only walking two batters. Garard only allowed two hits, struck out five batters and walked two in the first three innings, and Bredeson came on in the seventh and retired three of four batters and struck out two to close it out. At the plate, the Red Devils scored 12 runs on eight hits, five walks and three Knox errors.

No. 15 ranked Marietta opened the home portion of their 2023 schedule with a doubleheader split with Case Western Reserve. The Etta Express took game one, 3-1, before dropping the second game by the same score. Both teams are 3-3 on the season. Marietta got a pair of quality starts on the mound out of seniors Gino Sabatine and Trent Valentine. Sabatine worked 7.0 innings in game one and allowed one run on five hits with six strikeouts. Valentine tossed 6.0 innings in game two and gave up one run on six hits with five strikeouts. Neither got a decision. Hill (2-0) got the win in game one tossing the final 2.0 innings. He allowed no runs on two hits with a walk and four strikeouts. In game two the Spartans out dueled the Pioneers. Austin McGowan started on the mound for Case Western and pitched 4.2 innings giving up one run on three hits. Jonathan Simon (1-0) got the win with 2.1 innings of hitless relief. Tyler Horvath picked up his second save of the season with 2.0 innings of shutout work.

Cabrini downed Mary Washington 12-6 Wednesday afternoon behind a 4-for-5 day from Dustin Sutton. The Cavaliers (4-3) opened the day with a three-run first inning led 9-0 after two innings. UMW added a run in the bottom half of the sixth before tacking on four in the bottom half of the ninth, but a game-ending 5-4-3 double play put an end to the Eagles rally and secured the Cavaliers win. Cabrini starter James Mercante went 5.2 innings as he allowed just two runs on six hits and punched out three along the way. Allen Yager came on in relief and threw a scoreless inning and a third. Sutton homered and a doubled while Brook finished with two doubles and four RBIs. Houghton went 1-for-4 on the day and drove in three runs for the Cavaliers.

No. 11 Shenandoah ran its season-opening winning streak to eight games Wednesday afternoon with a 7-5 non-league victory over Mount Aloysius. With the score tied at 5-5 in the bottom of the eighth, junior designated hitter Colby Martin drilled a Chris Hasse offering 362 feet over the left field fence to push the Hornets (8-0) past Mount Aloysius (0-2). Martin's blast, his first of the season, was one of two that SU hit on the day. Gavin Horning had the first home run, to straightaway center and his second of the spring, in the bottom of the first to tie the contest at 1-1.

Jordan McKenzie homered twice to help lead Wilson to a 13-6 victory over Albright on a sunny Wednesday afternoon. The Phoenix pounded out 18 hits against the Lions, the fifth time in six games they have reached double figures in hits. Despite the score, it was the Lions who had the early momentum as they put a four-spot in their first at bat. Wilson eventually took the lead with a six-run third inning. Albright plated one run in the fifth, but Wilson came right back and put up a four-spot of its own in the bottom of the frame. Seth Smart recorded the win for his first decision of the season. Briar Castellow also came in and pitched two effective innings with four strikeouts.

Methodist played a neutral site game with Eastern
University on Wednesday afternoon, in non-conference
action. The Monarchs went on to defeated the Eagles 15-5
on Ebbets Field at the Cal Ripken Experience.

York College opened their home schedule with a come-from-behind 11-5 win over Rutgers-Camden on a chilly Wednesday afternoon at Jaquet Field in York. The Spartans have now won three straight as they have scored double figures in runs in three of their four games this year. The Spartans had two huge innings in the game as they scored four runs in the fifth and six in the seventh to pull away from the Scarlet Raptors. The Spartans and Scarlet Raptors are tied 9-9 in the all-time series as York has won three straight in the series.

Guilford welcomed a familiar foe to McBane Field, the Greensboro College Pride. Behind a incredible performance from junior pitcher, Jackson Marcellus, the Quakers bested the Pride, 24-3. On the mound, Jackson Marcellus threw a gem of a game. Marcellus went eight innings, allowing only three hits while striking out six in the win. From the plate, it was Bryce Vestal, going 4-5 with four RBI and scoring four more runs. 10 different Quakers drove in a run while totaling 12 extra base hits.

Alvernia (1-2) put up five runs in the third inning to propel itself to a 12-3 win over Stockton (2-1) on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at Alvernia. The Golden Wolves trailed 1-0 after the top of the second, but took the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Alvernia then put up crooked numbers in the third and sixth innings to take the 12-3 win and pick up their first win of the 2023 season. First year Evan Wood picked up his first career win on the mound with a six-inning performance. He struck out six and allowed just one run. Shayne Ostrowsky, Jack Cossa, and James Mueller each pitched one inning in relief. Smith led Alvernia with three hits, three RBIs, and two runs scored.

In the second game against Ferrum (2-6) this season, Southern Virginia (3-5) got revenge, taking down the Panthers on Wednesday afternoon, 5-2. In their portion of the second inning, the Knights tallied four runs to take control of the contest. Will Parker, who was third on the team in strikeouts a year ago but has been dealing with an injury this season, stepped up to the mound for his first appearance pitching this campaign. He closed out the game to register his first save of the season following four strikeouts and just two hits in the final two innings. "It felt great to pitch again and help my team win today," exclaimed Parker. "It was very discouraging earlier this year when I wasn't sure how much I would be able to play/pitch, so to be able to go out today and get the job done felt amazing."

Stevenson scored 24 runs in a blowout 24-2 win over the Mary Baldwin Fighting Squirrels. Stevenson tallied seven runs in the first inning and remained in control for the rest of the game while 12 different Mustangs notched a hit. Seth Hartman captured his first win of the season, coming into the game in the fifth inning. The Mustangs improve to 2-3, putting 40 runs on the board over the past two games. Connor Fox struck out two batters to lock down the win for Stevenson. The game ended after eight inning due to darkness.

A six-run fifth inning broke open what was a tie game and Scranton (2-1) registered a 12-6 victory over the King's College Monarchs (1-1) in the Royals' 2023 home opener on Wednesday afternoon at Volpe Field. King's had tied the game at four apiece with three runs in the top of the fifth, but Scranton immediately responded with six runs in the home half. Junior Jack Heineman reached on a bunt single and a throwing error on the play allowed the go-ahead run to score before fellow junior Matthew Querey ripped a two-run single through the left side and classmate Corey Zientek cleared the bases with a three-run triple. For Scranton, junior southpaw Matt Roda got a pair of strikeouts in the top of the fifth and earned his first win of the season. 

Dickinson got four RBIs on the day from Kenny Tagliareni and another three from Christian Kim to help rally back from 10-7 down in the eighth to draw even at 10-10. After a scoreless ninth that saw each team have a chance to grab the go-ahead run the contest was unfortunately called due to darkness without a winner leaving the two sides sharing a 10-10 tie at MacPhail Field in the Devils home opener. After a brief discussion among the two coaching staffs and the umpires it was deemed too dark to play any more and the game was called at 10-10.

Junior righthander Jason Monos assembled 5.1 innings of scoreless work and combined with 3 relievers on a 5-hit shutout as Ohio Wesleyan defeated Bluffton 8-0 in the season opener for both teams on Wednesday at Littick Field. The Bishops took the lead without the benefit of a hit in the second inning. Sophomore Noah Brazytis singled home 2 runs in the fifth and Blake Farley doubled in a run in the sixth before the Bishops broke the game open with a 4-run eighth inning that included a 2-run single by Zane Vitense.
