Powers from 1990's meet on Sunday

Freshman Kyle Douin went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI, and junior Cam Seymour went 3-for-6 with four runs scored and two RBI to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a high-scoring 17-9 win over No. 21 Ithaca College Bombers Sunday afternoon at the RussMatt Invitational. The Huskies pounded out 14 hits in their first win of the 2023 season, including six for extra bases (five doubles, and a home run). Facing each other six times in series history, Southern Maine leads Ithaca 5-1. he Huskies have won the last three consecutively. The previous five contests with the Bombers have been in the NCAA tournament; today's contest is the first in regular season history. USM last faced Ithaca on May 20, 2017 earning a 4-0 win at the Onondaga Baseball Complex in Syracuse, NY.

Junior rightfielder Jason Claiborn singled in the go-ahead run with one out in in the top of the tenth inning that capped a late rally from two runs down, and sophomores Matthew Wootton and Dan Driscoll combined on a three-hitter as the No. 3-ranked Warriors posted a 3-2 win over No. 16 Johns Hopkins University in a battle of early-season unbeatens Sunday afternoon at Stromberg Stadium. Defending national champion Eastern (5-0) won its 28th straight game over two seasons, winning in a one-run decision for the sixth straight time since a 2-1 Little East Conference home loss to Rhode Island College last April 23. Among Johns Hopkins' (9-1) wins this year were triumphs over No. 14 Cortland, 6-0, in its season and home-opener opener Feb. 24, and at No. 1-ranked Salisbury University, 23-4 (beaten by Eastern in last year's national championship round) a week ago.

Sophomore catcher Justin Keeler delivered a walk-off single today to give the Brandeis a 5-4 victory over Nichols at the Trinity College Invitational in Hartford. In the top of the ninth, Nichols batters had a walk and two strikeouts, with Keeler throwing out the walk trying to steal second. In the top of the ninth, pinch hitter Nick Heafey led off with a single, moved to second on a throwing error by the catcher and stole third. That allowed Keeler to deliver the game-winning single to right.

Bates's bats came alive in game two and the Bobcats split a doubleheader at RPI on Sunday, dropping game one 15-1 and flipping the script to win the second contest 14-5. Bates (4-2) is off to its best start to a season since 2015. The Bobcats are back in action this Saturday when they travel to Brandeis for a twin bill. The Engineers scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back on their way to a 15-1 win over the Bobcats in game one of Sunday's doubleheader. The Bobcats scored seven runs in the second inning and added five more in the third inning on their way to a 14-5 win over RPI in game two of Sunday's doubleheader.

The second-ranked Salisbury Sea Gulls continued its early-season surge by beating the Moravian Greyhounds 15-1 and 8-4 to sweep a three-game weekend series on Sunday afternoon at Donnie Williams Sea Gull Baseball Stadium. The Greyhounds got off to a fast start, loading the bases with one out on two singles and a walk and scoring a run on a Chris Pow RBI single. SU starter Tyler Villa mitigated the damage with an around-the-horn double play to get out of the jam. The Sea Gulls answered in the bottom of the third, the fourth, the fifth.... Dom Frigiola put together a big day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double, three runs and two RBIs.In game two it was Scott Cameron who got the party going in the bottom of the third inning with an opposite-field solo home run down the left field line, giving the Sea Gulls a 1-0 lead. The Greyhounds wasted no time answering in the top of the fourth but SU took control as Salisbury turned the sixth into its own home run derby with Ben Anderson, Stephen Rice and Luke Weddell all hit dingers. The Greyhounds got one last run in the ninth on a Holmes double, error and wild pitch, making it 8-4 in the final box score.

Marco Mannino's two-run single in the top of the 10th pushed No. 5 Rowan past Buena Vista, 16-14, in the RussMatt Invitational, snapping the Profs' two-game losing streak. Ryan Achey entered the game in the final inning and recorded his first career save for Rowan (5-2). Tyler Cannon led off the 10th with a single and Ryan Murphy connected on a double, getting the baserunners that Mannino needed for his game-winning RBIs. Achey issued one walk in the 10th, but was able to keep Buena Vista off the board, as he preserved the win for Christian Bascunan, who had entered the game in the eighth. The Profs seemed to seal the game in the ninth inning when they scored four runs to go up 14-10. Phil Sedalis had the big hit in that inning, with a single that scored Pat Defeciani and Murphy. Chris Curcio reached base after being hit by a pitch and then Brian Gallante reached base on an error, allowing Sedalis and Curcio to score. But Buena Vista answered with four runs on a two-run double and a pair of RBI singles to send the game into extra innings.

Lewis & Clark scored six runs in the bottom of the ninth inning of game two on Sunday, to secure a walk-off win and a doubleheader sweep of Whitman College at Borleske Stadium. Lewis and Clark won 12-7 and 10-9. Lewis & Clark scored four runs in three separate innings and senior Kris Wuelfing shut the Blues down for 3.2 innings to help Lewis & Clark earn a 12-7 victory. Sophomore Will Heron capped the Pioneers comeback in game two with a bases-clearing double that helped the Pios rally back from an 8-2 deficit. On the day, the first baseman went 4-8 with two runs, seven RBI, a double, a homer and a walk.

The ball kept rolling for Otterbein in a doubleheader with
Augsburg at the Kino Sports Complex on Sunday morning,
as the Cardinals swept both games and getting to
double-digit victories this young season. Otterbein
prevailed by counts of 7-2 and 8-4 vs. the Auggies,
running its winning streak to seven games and now
standing a crisp 11-2 overall.

Facing No. 11 Denison for the second time already this season, North Central (Ill.) avenged an earlier loss to the Big Red by winning 5-4 on Sunday morning in the second game of the Snowbird Baseball Classic. Starting pitcher Ryan Behling kept the Big Red scoreless over the first six innings of play as Denison did not have a player in scoring position during that time. Catcher Michael Davis threw out all three runners trying to steal second base over the first six innings. Behling threw 6.2 innings, allowing two runs and zero earned runs on the day while striking out four. Dom Listi tallied three hits, one run, and one RBI on the day while Rob Marinec recorded a hit with three walks. Joe Hamilton scored two runs while John Michael Scumaci totaled two runs batted in.

Three pitchers combined to allow only three earned runs as Muhlenberg split with Springfield on its first day in Florida. The Mules (4-3-1) came back to capture the nightcap, 4-2, after dropping the opener by a 2-1 score. In the second game, sophomores Jayden Barroqueiro and Brendan Hughes combined on a four-hitter, striking out a total of 9. Barroqueiro was dominant in one stretch, fanning five consecutive batters - one short of the school record. Hughes relieved in the third and gave up a single to his first batter, bringing in two runners, but he was spotless after that, retiring the final 13 hitters he faced to pick up his second win of the season.

The Crown Polars faced off with Roger Williams on Sunday and would come out with a 9-6 victory. Four Polars had multi hit games with Howie Hatton leading the offensive effort. Hatton went 4-5 on the day adding 2 RBI's scoring 2 runs with a double and a home run in the contest. Cael Magill went 2-4 scoring 2 runs, Rhys Dewick and Tristen Ciarlo both added two hits of their own as well. Seth Betts stole two bases for Crown. The Polars totaled 12 hits. Ryan Vondracek started on the mound for Crown and pitched three innings. He was replaced by Jacob Van Dam in the 4th and Van Dam only gave up 2 hits not allowing a run to score through six innings adding his second win of the season.

Junior Jack Irby hit a pinch-hit, two-run, walk-off homer as Stevens defeated No. 11 Arcadia 5-4 Sunday in MAC Freedom play at South County Regional Park as part of the Snowbird Baseball Classic. The Ducks (7-5; 1-2) led for much of the game as they earned their first conference victory of the season. This victory was also their second over a ranked team this season. Arcadia (5-4; 2-1), who won both games yesterday, including a walk-off win in game two, dropped its first conference contest of the season. Trailing by a run after Arcadia struck for two runs in the top of the ninth, sophomore Evan Pravato began the winning rally with a one-out walk off Hunter Sibley (0-2). Irby stepped to the plate in place of sophomore Colby Ching and drove a pitch well over the wall for his third career long ball to send the Ducks to victory.

Junior Myles Webb had a double, a homer, three runs and two RBI as the 15th-ranked Randolph-Macon topped Ferrum 11-5 on Sunday afternoon in ODAC action. After the Panthers went down in order in the top of the first, the Yellow Jackets took the lead for good in the bottom of the frame. The Panthers scored four times over the next three innings to pull within three at 8-5 but that was as close as they could get in the late innings. Junior Drew Ramos was the starter and winner for RMC, going 5.0 innings with four hits, two runs, one walk and seven strikeouts.

Despite trailing late, William Paterson (5-1) plated five runs in the eighth inning to edge Salve Regina (3-3), 11-10, at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. Despite Salve Regina retaking the lead with two runs in the bottom of the seventh, the William Paterson offense countered immediately. Three one-out walks loaded the bases before Jake Lutz ripped an RBI single to left. Steve Yelin then blasted a two-RBI double to left before senior Dan Carter plated one on an RBI two-bagger to right center to put the Pioneers ahead, 11-8. Salve Regina got one run back in the eighth and later made it a one-run game (11-10) in the ninth off a one-out double. However, sophomore Neel Telidevara closed the door with back-to-back outs to earn the save and secure the victory.

Led by timely extra-base hits and a three-inning, seven-strikeout relief performance from first-year pitcher Matthew Spenner, MIT defeated Trinity (Conn.) by an 8-6 final on Sunday afternoon. A three-hit, two-run bottom of the sixth gave Trinity the lead back at 6-4 as they held MIT to just one hit in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings combined. The top of the eighth was a different story though as the Engineers put up another four-run frame and chased two Trinity pitchers from the game as well. After a walk and back-to-back singles, first-year Luke Fitzgerald doubled down the right field line and went to third on an error to clear the bases and make it 7-6 MIT. Fitzgerald came around on an RBI-groundout by first-year Zev Moore for the eighth MIT run.

Aman Patel struck out nine over 5.1 innings and LeTourneau ended its losing skid with a 6-2 win over Schreiner on Sunday afternoon in the finale of the three-game series. Patel allowed one earned run on four hits, while striking out a season-high nine batters as he picked up a no-decision. He struck out four straight hitters at one point early in the game. The bullpen was sharp for LeTourneau as three relievers combined to allow one unearned run on two hits over the final 4.2 innings. Cortes (2-0) got the win after going 1.1 innings and collecting two strikeouts, while Will Bond and Cruz Cox had scoreless outings.

Hood's Tyler Schwarzman singled through a drawn in infield in the bottom of the seventh as the Blazers came from behind for a 4-3 win in the second game of a Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth doubleheader against Albright. Hood won the first game 6-1 for a season sweep of the Lions. Schwarzman and Richard Kershow each went 2-for-4 in both games. Joe Alexander held Albright to just two hits over five shutout innings in game one, improving to 3-0. He struck out seven and walked one. Hood used five pitchers in the second game. Tyler Cooney allowed a hit and two walks in three innings. Colby Childs, Mason Sawyers and Finn Scott-Daniels combined to pitch the fourth fifth and sixth. Aaron Heller tossed a scoreless seventh and picked up his first career win.

Beloit continued its strong start to the 2023 season on Sunday, splitting a pair of games against UW-Superior. The Buccaneers lost game one 3-2 in extra innings, before salvaging the split with an 8-4 game two victory. Game one saw UW-Superior (2-1) score two runs in the third inning, coming on an RBI single and on a throwing error by the Buccaneers. The score would remain 2-0 until the bottom of the final inning of regulation when Evan Zenger crushed a two-run homer over the right field wall to force extra innings, which saw UW-Superior push across the winning run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth. Beloit's bats then came alive in the second game of the doubleheader, as they scored four runs on five hits in the top of the first to take early control of the game. Connor Vogel, Souza, Brett Kiger, and Zenger each recorded RBI singles in that inning.

Stevenson split a home doubleheader with Widener on Sunday afternoon. Widener tacked on three runs in early in game one, adding another pair of runs in the sixth to take game one. The Mustangs responded early scoring five runs in the first two innings while the pitchers locked it down to take control of game two. The Mustangs move to 6-5 overall with a 2-1 MACC record. The Pride moves to a record of 3-8 (1-2 MACC).

Gilroy Prial scattered three hits as the Rutgers-Newark Scarlet Raiders bounced back with a 6-2 win over Emerson. The freshman tandem of Prial and Michael Weinbel recorded five of the Scarlet Raiders' eight hits as a team and drove in one run. On the bump, Colin Thomson (2-1) sent three batters to the dugout and allowed two runs on five hits. Rutgers-Newark and Emerson opened the game with a pair of scoreless innings before Emerson tallied the first run of the game in the top of the 3rd. The Scarlet Raiders responded with a pair in the bottom of the frame led by Robert Gonzalez and Eric Recchia RBIs. Connor Baksh kept the scoring going in the next inning with an RBI single to right field to score Weinbel who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning. Gonzalez capitalized on a fielding error to cross the dish for the second time in the game to put Rutgers-Newark ahead 4-1. Emerson tallied one run in the top of the 7th and in the next inning, the Scarlet Raiders would go on to add another two runs. Weinbel and Angelo Mascolo each brought home a run to extend Rutgers-Newark's lead out to 6-2 after Denny Furcal shutdown Emerson. Vince Taylor came to the mound in the 9th to close out the game for the Scarlet Raiders and put them back in the win column.

Whitworth's Hunter Dryden tossed over six innings of one-run baseball to lead the visiting Pirates to a 2-1 win over Linfield in the finale of a Northwest Conference series at Roy Helser Field on Sunday. Cameron Ley regained the lead for the Bucs' in the fourth inning when he singled to left field scoring Aidan Morrison from third base. Neither team scored again. Dryden (4-1), Whitworth's most consistent pitcher this season, earned his eleventh win of his career. Dryden scattered eight hits and fanned six Wildcats through 6.1 innings. Aidan Smith earned his first career save by throwing the final 2.2 innings, allowing only two hits.
