Top teams find success on Monday

Albertus Magnus split a GNAC doubleheader with Rivier on Monday afternoon at Rochford Field. After a last minute time change to beat out the rainy weather, the Falcons secured the win in game one with a final score of 9-4, but fell in game two to the Raiders, 7-5.

No. 11 Rowan defeated Penn State-Abington, 16-0, in a game that was shortened to five innings because of rain. Catcher Brian Gallante went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI, with Chris Curcio going 2-for-2 and driving in four runs as the Profs (12-3) picked up their seventh straight win. Pitchers Zach Grace, Jason O'Neill and Chase Rieger combined for the shutout and a two-hitter. Grace (2-0) struck out five and earned the win with O'Neill notching one strikeout and the Profs' pitchers not issuing a walk. Rowan had eight different players drive in runs with Jason Morgan and Dylan Maria each bringing home two apiece. Ryan Murphy scored three runs and recorded one RBI.

No. 15 Catholic won its fifth straight contest on Monday afternoon, defeating Landmark Conference foe Susquehanna 10-9 in dramatic fashion. For the second time in three contests versus the River Hawks, the Cardinals walked it off, this time with sophomore catcher Matthew Fisher plating a pair of runs with a game-winning double. In a back-and-forth game that saw the River Hawks take the lead in the top of the eighth inning, Catholic showed the resilience it has all year, completing its fourth walk-off win of the 2023 season. Trailing 9-8 in the bottom of the ninth, Ben Nardi reached first on an error to open the frame. Mitchel Johnson ripped a single to center, putting a pair of runners on base for Lucas Malave. Susquehanna's Adam Stuck retired Malave, but up to the plate stepped Fisher. The sophomore catcher laced a double to left-center field, past a diving Sean McCulloch. Nardi and pinch-runner Mark Villanueva came around to score and the Cardinals were 10-9 winners.

No. 7 UW-Stevens Point (9-5, 2-2) bounced back with a pair of wins over UW-Platteville (5-8, 2-2) on Monday. The Pointers earned a 19-6 run-rule win in game one and a 4-2 victory in the series finale. The Pointers belted six home runs on day from six different players. In game one, UWSP pounded out 19 hits, a season-high, as each of the nine batters had at least one hit with six recording a multi-hit game. Anthony Tomczak went 4-for-4 with three RBI and four runs scored in game one. He scored another run in game two. Brenden Canterbury collected five hits on the day, including a mammoth home run in game two. He had four RBI and three runs scored on the day. Tyler Soule hit his first career home run in game one, one of two hits in the game. He drove in three and scored three times. Logan Matson homered in game one as well, a two-run shot, and he led the way with four RBI. Jakob Boos belted a three-run home run and scored twice in game one.

Lancaster Bible has been looking for a breakthrough after a tough stretch of games this season, and Monday morning was just that for them after earning a hard fought 12-11 victory over the St. Mary's (Md.) Seahawks. The win improves the Chargers to 3-14 overall and 1-5 in United East play, while the Seahawks fall to 6-7 overall and 4-2 in conference. An offensive outburst would be the best way to describe Monday morning, with both teams totaling double digits in hits and having their fair share of home runs. The Chargers managed to outlast the Seahawks through nine innings to pick up their first conference win. The Chargers had 13 hits for 12 runs and 11 RBIs, including five home runs on the morning. The Chargers' five home runs is the most in a game this season. The Chargers are now tied at 3-3 for their all-time series with the Seahawks.

Curry prevailed over Worcester State University in an 11-10 extra-inning thriller in non-conference action Monday afternoon at Jack Vallely Diamond. The Colonels were down to their final out in the bottom of the ninth when sophomore Tommy Marshall stepped to the plate with his team trailing 9-8. On a 1-1 pitch, Marshall crushed a solo home run well over the right field fence, tying the score at 9-9 and forcing extra innings. The Lancers took the lead back in the top of the 10th on an RBI double from Tyler Smith to go ahead 10-9, and it looked like the run would be enough to secure the win. With two on and two outs in the bottom of the frame, Colonel sophomore Brett Heggs hit a routine grounder to second base that appeared to be the final out of the game, but the ball was booted, allowing pinch runner Yaya Fuentes to score from second base to tie the game. A batter later, junior George Calderon finished the game by slicing a base hit to right field to walk the Colonels off with the win.

Saint Joseph's College (4-9, 2-0 GNAC) kicked off GNAC play with a pair of victories over Norwich University (5-10, 0-2 GNAC) at Larry Mahaney Diamond on Monday afternoon. St. Joe's defeated the Cadets by a 6-3 score in the Monks' 2023 home opener and completed the sweep with a 6-4 triumph in the nightcap. In the bottom of the first in game one, the Saint Joseph's offense exploded with five runs on four hits and a pair of Norwich errors as junior Luke Stephens roped a two-run double to deep center, senior Jackson Stanton notched an RBI ground out, and junior Dawson Gundlah delivered an RBI single to give the hosts a larger early lead. The Monks used a similar formula in the closing contest, as the hosts put up a crooked number in the bottom of the first and employed solid pitching to earn another victory.

Webster wrapped up their three-game series against Spalding this afternoon at GCS Credit Union Ballpark in Sauget, Illinois. The Gorloks defeated the Golden Eagles by a final score of 9-1 to improve to 8-8 on the season and 2-1 in conference play. With the loss, Spalding drops to 12-5 on the year and 1-2 in the SLIAC. The Gorloks put together nine hits in the contest. After four scoreless innings, Spalding got on the board in the top of the fifth to take a 1-0 lead. Webster answered back with a sacrifice fly from Parker Wielt in the bottom of the sixth and the score remained tied over the next couple of innings. With the score tied in the eighth, Webster's bats came alive as they rallied for eight runs, including a three run double from Ben Swords, to give themselves a 9-1 advantage heading into the ninth. The Gorloks were able to pick up the final three outs in the top of the ninth and solidify the series win.

Rain turned a Sunday doubleheader into a single game on Monday, as Greensboro got back on the bus today looking to come away with a big USA South Conference victory over #18 nationally ranked Methodist. Behind a big first inning, the Pride set the tone early to move to 4-1 in the conference with the win, 12-3. Greensboro wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as Senior Connor Morehouse singled in their first run. They continued to add on and in the seventh inning Junior Cameron Edmonds and Drake Carrick hit back-to-back home runs opening up the Pride's lead to 12-2. Despite one more run by Methodist, the Pride would come away with the conference win, 12-3.

Another late-inning rally led Wabash to a victory over Illinois Wesleyan. The Little Giants completed the three-game series sweep with a 7-4 win over the Titans in Bloomington, Illinois, Monday evening after claiming a pair of victories Sunday. Wabash (14-6) senior Jacob Bishop was mowing people down on Monday, striking out eight Illinois Wesleyan (4-11) hitters over six innings of work to help propel the Little Giants to victory.The eight strikeout effort matched Bishop's single-game best effort. He struck out eight batters twice during the 2022 season and fanned eight Swarthmore batters earlier this year. In addition to his eight strikeouts, Bishop (3-2) went six innings, giving up four runs, all of them earned, on five hits and walking one for Wabash. Sophomore Gavin Pierson also made an impact on the mound for the Little Giants, throwing three shutout innings while allowing two hits, with one walk and three strikeouts to earn his first career save.

Immaculata won their third consecutive game this afternoon defeating Kean 6-0 in a game that ended in the sixth inning due to rain. Immaculata got on the board early and extend their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when Josh Crowding homered to left field to put Immaculata up 4-0. Austin Klemick drove in Joey Sacco and Ryan Struble with a two-run single to extend Immaculata's lead to 6-0. Ryan Crowell pitched a scoreless top of the sixth inning for Immaculata, before the rains began and stopped the action. The game was called after a short delay due to rain closing out the win for Immaculata 6-0.

Kenyon bounced back in a big way with two dominant
victories over the Illinois Institute of Technology after
coming out on the wrong end of yesterday's double-
header sweep. The Owls made quick work of the Scarlet
Hawks in both games, winning 11-0 and 18-4 in two
games that ended in seven innings due to run rule.

Sophomore outfielder Koy Carpenter registered four hits, pacing five McMurry hitters with two-or-more Monday. Carpenter's four-for-five, three-runs-scored output was at the forefront of a 9-7 War Hawks win that claimed a weekend American Southwest Conference road set at the University of the Ozarks' Lonnie Qualls Field. The triumph, the seventh in the last 10 games for the Maroon and White, moved head coach Josh Lee's team to 10-12 overall and 6-6 in the conference. Buoyed by the 16-hit blitzkrieg, the War Hawks pitching staff went to work. Sophomore starter Jonathan Enriquez, senior Travis Beauchamp, sophomore Adam Trevino, and sophomore Grayson Winter struck out eight Eagles, with Trevino earning the win, and Winter slamming the door shut over the final one and two-thirds for the save.

In a rare Monday morning SUNYAC doubleheader, Oneonta swept Plattsburgh to finish the weekend 3-0 and pick up their tenth-straight victory. Oneonta won the first game 3-2 and then the second game 5-1. The Red Dragons move to 10-3 overall and 3-0 in the conference, while the Cardinals fall to 4-10 and 0-3 in the SUNYAC. Junior starting pitcher Devin Rooney finished with a career-high eight strikeouts and pitched 6.0 innings. Junior Tom Roefaro (2-0) earned the win and gave up just one hit. Oneonta poured in three early runs in the afternoon game and Plattsburg could not put a tally up until the sixth. The Cardinals scored in the sixth following a bases-loaded walk to make it 4-1. Oneonta added one more in the eighth as Josh Gilkey ran in from a Jake Barrett sacrifice fly. Michael Sadowski (1-1) went 5.1 innings with nine strikeouts. Sophomore Kyle Roper picked up the save going 3.2 innings with four strikeouts.

Grove City opened its 20-game Presidents' Athletic Conference schedule Monday afternoon by taking both ends of a conference doubleheader at Westminster. Grove City (14-4, 2-0 PAC) rallied for a 4-2 win in the opener, then stormed to an 11-0, seven-inning victory in Game Two. The 10-run mercy rule stopped the second game after seven innings. Senior pitcher Tate Ostrowski matched a career high in Game One as he struck out 13 men in 7 2/3 innings. In Game Two, sophomore pitcher David Leslie fired a one-hit shutout. Ostrowski yielded two runs in the bottom of the first inning but blanked Westminster (5-10, 0-2 PAC) for the duration of his outing. Grove City forged a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning and surged ahead in the seventh. Grove City took early control of Game Two by scoring seven runs on four hits in the second inning.

After coming back from a three-run deficit to earn a 6-5 win in the opener, Saint Vincent was forced to settle for a split in its Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader at Waynesburg after the Yellow Jackets walked it off in the bottom of the ninth for a 5-4 win in game two. After the Bearcats fell behind 3-0 in the second inning of game one, Derek Hald's two-run single in the top of the seventh proved to be the game-winner, capping off the big comeback. In game two, SVC tied the game at 3-3 and kept the momentum in the top of the eighth, as L.J. Evans smacked a one-out triple and scored on Bonine's single to put SVC in front, 4-3. The lead was short-lived, however, as Waynesburg's Bryce Bedillion led off the bottom of the eighth with a solo home run, his second shot of the game, to forge a 4-4 tie. The Bearcats went down in order in the top of the ninth, and in the bottom half, Waynesburg used a walk, bunt, and one-out single by Gavin Pratt to walk off the 5-4 win.

The Alfred State Pioneers played the Gettysburg Bullets today and won 3-0. Jon White pitched a complete game shutout, first of his career. He had 5 strikeouts while only giving up 4 hits. White got out of his only jam striking out 2 hitters stranding a man on third. Tim Holler stayed hot picking up 2 hits in 5 at bats while also starting the scoring by scoring on a pass ball. Holler came up clutch in the 9th with an RBI single scoring Joseph Schatz from second base. The Pioneers got their other run from a Nick Serce moonshot to right center, which was also his 100th career hit.

Senior OF Brandon Chow went 2-for-3 with three runs, three RBIs, a walk, a steal, and an inside-the-park home run to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 21-8 win over the visiting Dean College Bulldogs this afternoon on Murren Family Field at DiBenedetto Stadium. Trinity improves to 8-4 and Dean drops to 1-13 with its 10th loss in a row. Trinity allowed 16 hits but had 13 of their own and took advantage of three errors and 13 walks by the Bulldogs. Trinity trailed, 4-3, after three innings but tied the game in the fourth frame on a double by senior co-captain Patrick Dillon and a sacrifice fly by classmate Andrew Tuozzolo. Chow manufactured the game-winning run in the fifth inning, leading off with a walk and advancing three bases on a blown pickoff play. In the sixth inning, Trinity blew the game open with nine runs. Sophomore Joseph Bossinas blasted a three-run homer for to left field for Dean to make it, 14-7, in the middle of the seventh, but Trinity answered with four more runs in the bottom of the seventh and three in the eighth.
