Salisbury gets to the 20 win mark with blowout win

Marywood University evened its record with a 4-1 victory over Lycoming College Thursday in non-conference action. After allowing a run in the first, the Pacers blanked the Warriors over the remaining eight innings. Adam Ginsberg (pictured) was responsible for three of the Pacers' six hits on the afternoon. Ginsberg went 3 for 5 with a double and a pair of runs.

Second-ranked Salisbury put its foot on the gas at the plate and cruised to its 20th win of the season, rolling by the TCNJ Lions, 21-4, on Thursday afternoon at Ackerman Park. The Sea Gulls are the sixth team to reach the 20 win mark. Three of the six teams are members of the C2C Conference. Jacob Ference went yard for the seventh time this season, finishing 1-for-4 with the home run and four RBIs. Ference now has more homers in 2023 than he did over his first three seasons at SU (six). Cameron Hyder batted 2-for-3 with three runs and an RBI. At 245 career hits he is now seven away from tying the Sea Gull record of 252, and at 184 runs he has tied Jason Ewing '02 for fifth-most in program history. Brandon Epstein (3-1) scooped up the win with two scoreless innings in relief, surrendering no hits and one walk with two strikeouts. Epstein, Garrett Beaver, Aaron Combs, Mitchell Wittkamp and Todd Hendrix combined for six strong innings out of the bullpen, giving up just one unearned run. Benji Thalheimer lasted three innings in his start, allowing three runs on three hits with four walks and two punchouts.

Marking the program's highest single-game run total since 2020, Castleton turned in a 21-5 rout of Anna Maria Thursday afternoon. Jackson Cardozo led the onslaught with a 4-for-5 day at the plate, doubling once and tripling twice to collect five RBIs. Reece de Castro logged a career-high six RBIs on two hits and three walks. Leaving the yard for the second consecutive game was Hunter Perkins who went 2-for-4 while knocking in four runs. Tyler McLain followed up his three-hit game at RPI with another against Anna Maria (7-9) while being one of four Spartans (7-9) to score thrice. On the mound, six different pitchers toed the rubber for Castleton. Luke Russell held the AMCATS to one run on three hits with a strikeout in his first career start. Owen Phelps earned his first decision of the year, snagging the win in 1.2 scoreless innings with a punch-out.

The long awaited Gordon home-opener happened this afternoon on a windy J. Tec White Field where the Fighting Scots welcomed the Rivier Raiders in non-conference action. After stringing together 16 hits, the Fighting Scots ended it early as the blue and white defeated the Raiders, 22-7 in seven innings. Gordon broke it open in the home half of the fourth, scoring 10 runs on seven hits, highlighted by a grand slam off the bat of Shane Demers to lead 18-4 after four innings. The Scots added four more in their next at bats before Rivier was able to put three more on the board in the top of the seventh. In the end, the home team took care of business to secure the 22-7 victory in their home-opener. Freshman Hunter Simpson had a career-high three hits and five RBIs. Additionally, Simpson's homer today was his first as a Scot. David Melendez also had a career day, with three hits, three RBIs, and four runs scored.

Hiram scored 18 runs – its most in a game since 2021 – and tied a season-high with 17 hits in an 18-7 win over Capital on Thursday afternoon at Fishel Field. The top of the Terriers batting order once again delivered, with Chaisson Marrs, Connor Bansek and Hal Walker Jr. combining for 7 hits, 6 RBI and 8 runs scored. Marrs also hit the team's first home run of the season, a 3-run shot over the left-center-field wall. Jacob Koces spearheaded the pitching staff with his 2nd victory of the season; the sophomore struck out 7 hitters over 5 innings of 2-run ball (1 earned run allowed). Kaden Anderson escaped trouble in the sixth inning and Robert James closed it out with 2 strong innings of relief. It marks Hiram's third consecutive victory, tied for the team's longest win streak of the season. Head coach Phil Brua and company also won their first three games of the 2023 campaign.

Swarthmore held on to defeat Widener, 10-6, on Thursday afternoon. Aidan Sullivan and Nate Jbara led the Garnet offense with two RBI and a pair of hits, respectively. Swarthmore tallied 10 hits on the afternoon and worked nine walks. Joshua Rankey served as the opener as Swarthmore used seven pitchers to defeat the Pride. Rankey tossed two innings of one-run ball, while Alex Schoessler, Nick Baldev and Gabe Elliot followed with scoreless frames. Both Baldev and Elliot kept the opponent off the board in their collegiate debuts. Casey Jordan provided some much-needed stability in the late innings as he held Widener scoreless in 1.2 innings of relief. Jack Fitzgerald then closed out the game with a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save.

New Jersey City looked to continue its home winning streak on Thursday taking on the Muhlenberg College Mules. NJCU claimed the victory on this chilly afternoon, 4-1. Early on senior pitcher Julian Fernandez got into trouble in the opening innings but escaped unscathed. With two outs in the third, senior infielder Jimmy Vizzoni brought home the first run, giving the Gothic Knights a 1-0 lead after three. From this point Fernandez was lights out going 6.2 innings without an earned run and had a career-high seven strikeouts. Frank Shipman and Josh Hernandez followed on the mound. Hernandez allowed two Mules to reach base in the inning but none into scoring position, and a flyout would give him his second save of the season, and NJCU the victory, the fourth straight at home.

Five hitters for No. 21 Wheaton (Mass.) collected multiple
hits as well as two or more runs batted in as part of a 19-6
victory over host Rhode Island College this afternoon at
Pontarelli Field in Providence, R.I. The Lyons, who are
ranked in the most recent D3baseball.com national poll,
have won 11 of their last 12 and improve to 13-3 on the
season, while the Anchormen fall to 11-8. Wheaton scored
a season-high 19 runs and nine different players scored at
least one run or drove in a run. The Lyons were issued 15
walks to come within one of the school record for free passes.

Keystone snapped a five-game losing skid on Thursday with a 13-9 non-conference victory at Moravian. With the win, the Giants improve to 7-9 and open up CSAC play this weekend against Clarks Summit from March 31-April 1. The Greyhounds drop to 7-11. Overall, the Giants tallied 17 hits on the day, with three coming from Justin Mann and Jason Thomas. Anthony Raimo drove in four runs while Giovanni Diaz and Bobby Pokorney launched homers to pace Keystone. Robert Estrada finished with a team-high three runs scored. On the mound, Nathan Hinkley earned his third win this spring, going five innings with eight flyouts and five groundouts. Slothing Che, Anthony Mierez, Grant McGowan appeared in relief with Ryan Oka earning the save.

Fontbonne opened the three-game series against Principia with a 19-0 shutout in seven innings this Thursday evening. The Griffins opened the score with Colby Shivers hitting a double to left field to score Ty Kueper and Eric Creech. That was all they would need but added plenty more. Gavin Kinworthy (5-2) took the win on the mound. He pitched 6.0 innings and struck out five while allowing two hits. Camdem Coleman pitched 1.0 inning and struck out two. The Griffins outhit Principia, 21-2.

In a back-and-forth affair, Neumann struck last to pull out a 5-4 non-conference win over Albright on Thursday afternoon. Brandon Colon was the offensive catalyst for the Knights, going 2 for 3 with a double, a walk, two runs batted in, and a run scored. Shawn Vega was also 2 for 3 with a walk, and an RBI. Chris Balshuweit picked up his first collegiate win to improve to 1-0 on the season. He went 2 2/3 innings in relief, retiring all eight batters he faced, striking out five. Jack Valentine picked up his second save of the year, allowing a hit and a walk in the ninth, but he struck out three to seal the game.

Ramapo battled late in the game to earn a non-conference win over the College of Mount Saint Vincent, 6-5. CMSV scored two unearned runs for a 5-3 lead before Ramapo took the lead back in the bottom half of the inning. Brian Baranok worked a walk before Matt Lalomia launched a two-run home run down the left field line to tie the game at five. Matt Carovillano laced a double to left-center before Will Egner drove him in with a hard hit single through the infield into left for the 6-5 lead. The Dolphins would not go away quietly in the last two innings. In the eighth they stranded one runner on base while they would put two runners on base before Ramapo reliever Billy Scanlon induced back-to-back infield ground outs to end the game.

Adrian took the MIAA opener on Thursday afternoon at Nicolay Field defeating the Calvin Knights 9-3. Daniel Gutierrez had a solid pitching performance for the Bulldogs on Thursday throwing six innings allowing three runs with eight strikeouts. Adrian built a 7-0 lead before the Knights could get on the board. Edward Wagner ended the scoring when he singled in a pair in the sixth to extend the Adrian lead to 9-3. Daniel Gutierrez picked up his third win of the season with six innings pitched with eight strikeouts. Gage Ricker threw two innings in relief not allowing a base runner while Jakob Charles had a scoreless ninth to close out the win. The Calvin pitching staff struggled with control walking three Bulldogs and hitting seven batters. Wagner led the Adrian offense finishing 3-for-4 with four RBIs on the day.

Allegheny returned to the win column on Thursday, as the Gators defeated visiting Penn State Behrend, 7-3, on a sunny afternoon on Robert M. Garbark Field at the Robertson Athletic Complex. Allegheny (7-10), which has received several quality performances from its starting pitching over the past week, got another from from second-year hurler Mark Schweickert against the Lions (5-8). In the longest outing of his career, the hard-throwing righty logged career highs in innings pitched (6.2) and strikeouts (9), while allowing only one unearned run. Schweickert did walk four and surrendered seven hits, but was able to dance out of trouble to earn his first collegiate win on 109 total pitches. The Gators tallied runs in the first, second, and sixth innings, and carried a 3-1 lead into the seventh-inning stretch. In the bottom of the seventh, however, Allegheny put a crooked number on the scoreboard and took a comfortable 7-1 advantage. Daniel Morgano, the second reliever head coach Brandon Crum called from the bullpen, shut down Penn State Behrend's two-run rally in the top of the eighth and closed the door with 2.0 scoreless innings.

Alma hosted their first home game of the year on Thursday against the Flying Dutchmen of Hope College. The Scot opened up MIAA play with a 8-4 win at Klenk Park before completing the series later this weekend in Holland. Kicking off the offense for the Scots was Avery Carnicom who was able to reach base after wearing a pitch on the sleeve. Tony Smith then sent Carnicom home from first on a double, putting Alma up 1-0 after the first. The Scots would tally their final run of the inning as Grunwald scored on a wild pitch and Alma went into the top of the fifth with a 7-0 lead. The Flying Dutchmen scored their first run of the game in the seventh and added another in the eighth to bring themselves within five. Hope showed some life in the ninth as they scored two early runs, looking as if they were rallying for a comeback, but reliever Chase Balhoff was able to quiet the bats down and lock up Alma's second win of the week.

Behind a stellar outing from freshman Max Vosters, Muskingum tallied a 7-4 win over Pitt.-Greensburg to move to 12-4 on the season. Freshman Max Vosters tossed six innings in relief to earn the win out of the Muskingum bullpen. Vosters moves to 2-0 on the season after giving up one run against the Bobcats on Thursday. The Muskies took their first lead of the game in the fourth inning when Quinten Collins hit an RBI groundout to second base scoring junior Nate Keiser. Muskingum was led by sophomore Weston Melick who finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI.

Western New England scored four runs in the top of the first inning in Thursday afternoon's non-conference victory over the Beacons of UMass-Boston, which proved to be enough to pace their way to a 7-4 victory on Thursday afternoon. Western New England brought their bats to Boston early in the game and never looked back, scoring four runs in the opening frame to take an early lead. WNE starting pitcher Matt Lauria would be dialed in early quickly setting down the Beacons in the first three innings. Aaron Cole collected two hits in the game, including an RBI triple to lead WNE. After grabbing five hits to start the game, WNE recorded just two hits for the rest of the game, though were able to take advantage of three UMB errors. Matt Lauria shined on the hill for WNE, going a season best seven innings. Andrew Melone picked up his second save of the season, going 0.2 innings.

Rutgers-Newark used a late comeback to steal a win from Cairn, 15-11, and extend their win streak to eight in a row before they open NJAC play on Sunday. The win moves the Scarlet Raiders to 15-4 overall while Cairn falls to 6-12. Robert Gonzalez finished 3-for-6 with three runs and two RBIs. Joining Gonzalez with two RBIs were Eric Recchia, Matthew Rypkema, and Armando Alvarez. From the bump, Alex Couto (1-0) earned the win after pitching two innings with three strikeouts. Cairn continued their scoring streak in the 6th, scoring four runs before adding a pair in the 7th. The Scarlet Raiders went into the top of the 9th down a run, however, an error broke the dam as they would go on to plate five runs behind a 2 RBI single from Matthew Rypkema. Vince Taylor came in from the bullpen and shut Cairn down to complete the comeback victory.
