D3baseball.com Team of the Week

The Team of the Week is D3baseball.com's weekly honor roll, in its twelfth season of recognizing the top performers at each of nine positions from the previous week. Players are selected from nominations from their school's sports information directors. This is the second Team of the Week of the 2023 season.

Games of February 20-26, 2023

C   Matt Malcom, Sr., Eastern Connecticut State

Malcolm batted .538 (7-for-13) with three home runs, seven RBI and six runs scored as Eastern Connecticut State extended its winning streak to 26 games over two seasons with an opening three-game sweep at Virginia Wesleyan.

1B  Ian Libby, Gr., Rochester Inst. Tech.

Libby batted .625 (10-for-16) over the weekend where he set a RIT record with seven hits in one game.  Three of his hits were of the extra-base kind (two doubles, triple) as he scored six and drove in eight.

 2B  Grant Mitchell, Jr., Wooster

Mitchell went 4-for-10 with a team-leading five RBI in Saturday's season-opening doubleheader against Grove City. Mitchell clubbed a three-run homer in the nightcap. He tied the program's single-game record with two triples in game one of Saturday's twinbill. He scored three runs.

SS  Colby Seltzer, Sr., Hardin-Simmons

Seltzer was 6-for-11 (.545) with two home runs, a double, three runs and six RBIs as the Cowboys opened ASC play by taking two of three games from two-time defending league champion Texas-Dallas on the road. He was also flawless in the field at shortstop with nine assists.  

3B  Ryan Wohlers, Sr., Loras

Wohlers did a little bit of everything for the Duhawks as he led the team to a 4-0 weekend to start the season. In four games, he hit .444 (8-for-18) with two doubles, two home runs, five runs and nine RBIs. He also earned the win in game two of the team's doubleheader with Illinois College as he pitched 2.0 innings in relief while striking out two and allowing zero runs on two hits. 

OF  Lucas Granata, So., Brevard

Granata went 10-for-17 (.588) with three extra base hits (two triples, home run), eight RBIs, and six runs scored.

OF  Josh Hernandez, Sr., New Jersey City

Hernandez had a stellar first week of the season for NJCU (1-1). The senior went 6-of-8 at the plate (.750) and slugged 1.375 with four RBI thanks to a pair of doubles and a solo home run. He added eight runs, a walk, was hit by a pitch, had a sac fly and was 2-for-2 on the base pads, as well. Additionally, he tossed 3.0 scoreless/hitless innings out of the pen to go with three strikeouts and just one walk.

OF Ryan Murray, Gr., Mt. St. Joseph

The Mount St. Joseph centerfielder had an unbelievable week, including one of the best single game performances in school history. Helping the Lions to a 3-1 series win over Asbury, Murray hit .600 (9-for-15), slugged 1.400 (double, triple, three home runs) and had a .667 OBP. He drove in 17 runs and score eight over the four games. In game two of the series he was 4 for 6 at the plate, hitting for the cycle with a grand slam and a new school record 9 RBIs.

OF  Ellis Schwartz, Sr., Emory

Senior Ellis Schwartz had a monster weekend for the Eagles, going 8-for-16 (.500) with five extra base hits (two doubles, three home runs) and 13 RBI as Emory swept Oglethorpe. Schwartz had at least two hits and two RBI in all three wins and had a day for the ages on Sunday. In the finale, Schwartz's set Emory single-game records with three home runs and eight RBI.

DH  Roman March, Jr., Salisbury

March slashed .429/.556/1.000 with a double, home run, three runs scored and six RBIs in the Sea Gulls' doubleheader sweep of St. John Fisher on Sunday.

SP  Nick Kosmetatos, Sr., Benedictine (IL)

Kasmetatos tossed seven shutout innings and struck out 11 in his first collegiate appearance. He allowed just two hits and did not walk a batter in a 6-0 shutout, the 150th career win for head coach Adam Smith at Benedictine.

SP  David Muirhead, So., Marymount

Muirhead put up his second-straight solid start to help the Saints take down DeSales Friday afternoon. Going 7.2 innings, Muirhead struck out 12 Bulldogs to just one walk, allowing just a lone hit. He earned the win to go 2-0 on the young season.

SP  Dylan Weber, Sr., Christopher Newport

Dylan put together two impressive outings during the week, striking out 15 over 12.1 innings pitched while surrendering just two hits. He picked up wins against Hampden-Sydney and No. 6 Marietta while improving to 3-0 on the season. Against Marietta in the D3 Showcase, Weber struck out six and no-hit the Etta Express for six innings before finally allowing a lead-off hit in the bottom of the seventh. He retired 13 straight batters before the hit and faced only three batters more than the minimum in the contest. Earlier in the week, Weber struck out nine in 6.0 innings of one-hit, shutout ball against Hampden-Sydney in an 11-2 win.

RP  Calvin Harris, Sr., Buena Vista

Harris made a pair of relief appearances against Bethel (Minn.) and was a vital piece of Buena Vista taking 2-of-3 from the Royals. He entered the series opener on Saturday afternoon with the bases loaded and two outs in the 7th and picked up a strikeout to end the frame, working the final 2.1 innings of that game and earning the win while striking out four of the 7 batters he faced. On Sunday in the series finale, he came on and pitched the ninth inning, walking one and striking out one, en route to his first save of the year and 14th in his career.
