Green no-hitter highlights sweep

MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia Wisconsin baseball team went 2-0 on the day versus the Lakeland Muskies, taking the first game 17-0 and the second 15-2. Despite being a home game for Lakeland, the game's location was moved to CUW's campus due to weather and field conditions at Lakeland. 

The Falcons took the first game 17-0 behind a dominant performance from senior pitcher Ryan Green (Green Bay, Wis.). 

The Falcons took the early lead in the top of the first inning as senior Sean Tillmon (Plainfield, Ill.) tripled to right center field, bringing in fellow senior Daniel Hahn (Cudahy, Wis.), who singled in the at-bat before, giving CUW the 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the inning. 

Senior starting pitcher Ryan Green completed the 1-2-3 in the bottom of the first. 

CUW added one more run in the top of the second inning. Senior Dillan Fike (Oak Lawn, Ill.) reached on-base with a bunt single. In the next at-bat, Fike then stole second. Daniel Hahn then advanced Fike to third base with a single. Sean Tillmon then scored Fike with a fielder's choice, extending the Falcon's lead to 2-0 after the top of the second inning. 

In the bottom of the second, the Muskies were once again held scoreless as the Falcons went three up down and closed out the inning with a 5-4-3 double play.

Heading into the top of the fourth inning, the Falcons continued to hold the 2-0 lead. 

The top of the fourth inning saw the Falcons crack the game wide open when they scored nine runs.

Dillan Fike led off the inning with a double down the left-field line. Senior Johannes Haakenson (Janesville, Wis.) hit an RBI triple to center field in the next at-bat, scoring Fike. 

Daniel Hahn was then walked. Next, Sean Tillmon continued his strong play with an RBI single, scoring Haakenson and advancing Hahn to second. Daniel Hahn and Sean Tillmon both advanced a base following a passed ball.

With runners in scoring position, senior Tristan Largent (Verona, Wis.) hit an RBI double to left field, scoring Hahn from third.

Tillmon eventually scored following another passed ball from the Muskie's pitcher while Largent reached third. Sophomore Kyle Flynn (Nashville, Tenn.) then hit a sac-fly RBI, bringing home Largent. 

Junior Jimmy Juergensen (Cedarburg, Wis.) was walked while freshman Matt Miller (Fredonia, Wis.) reached on base following an error from Lakeland's third baseman.

With runners on second and third, Josh Aguiniga singled to center field, loading the bases for the Falcons. 

Johannes Haakenson capitalized on the bases-loaded opportunity and singled to right field, scoring Juergensen and Miller.

Daniel Hahn extended the inning with an RBI single to right field, scoring Josh Aguiniga from third. 

In his second plate appearance of the inning, Tillmon was walked, advancing Hahn to second and Haakenson to third, loading the bases once again for the Falcons.

Tristan Largent was then hit by a pitch and earned another RBI, scoring the Falcon's ninth and final run of the top of the fourth. 

Following the top of the fourth inning, the Falcons enjoyed a comfortable 11-0 lead.

Meanwhile, Ryan Green continued his impressive outing on the mound for CUW, once again completing two quick 1-2-3 innings in the bottom of the fourth and fifth.

The runs continued to pour on in the top of the sixth inning. Daniel Hahn led off the inning with a walk. Then, Tristan Largent advanced Hahn to third with a single to center field.

With runners on the corners, Kyle Flynn reached on base with an error by the right fielder and recorded an RBI after scorning Hahn from third. 

Tristan Largent then scored on a wild pitch as Kyle Flynn advanced to third. Senior Brandon Niedfeldt (Roscoe, Ill) added another run to the Falcon's total with an RBI single to left field, scoring Flynn from third. 

Senior Cole Aguirre (Chino Hills, Calif.) then hit an RBI double to right center, scoring Neidfeldt. In the next at-bat, Josh Aguiniga also hit an RBI double to left center, scoring Aguirre. 

After advancing to third from a fly-out to right field, Aguiniga crossed home plate following a wild pitch. 

In the top of the sixth inning, the Falcons scratched six more runs and extended their lead to 17-0, heading into the bottom of the sixth. 

The Muskies could not respond in the bottom of the sixth or seventh inning as CUW earned the 17-0 win in game one.

Ryan Green stole the show for the Falcons in game one as he threw the complete game no-hitter. In the win, Green faced 22 total batters, striking out four. The no-hitter is the first for CUW baseball since March 12th, 2022, when the Falcons beat Bethany Lutheran 5-0.

With the win, Ryan Green's record on the season improves to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play. 

On the offensive end, Josh Aguiniga led the Falcons with four hits, while Daniel Hahn and Sean Tillmon had three. Meanwhile, Johannes Haakenson and Sean Tillmon had three RBIs each.

As a team the Falcons out hit the Muskies 20-0.

The bats stayed hot in the second game, as the Falcons beat the Muskies 15-2. 

In the top of the second inning, Jimmy Juergensen scratched the first two runs for the Falcons with a 2-run home run to right field, bringing in Kyle Flynn, who doubled in the at-bat before. Later in the inning, Johannes Haakenson brought in Josh Aguniga with a single to left field, extending the early Falcon lead to 3-0.

The Muskies responded with two runs in their half of the inning, cutting CUW's lead to 3-2. 

Concordia answered in the top of the third with two runs. Josh Aguiniga hit an RBI single to score Tristan Largent, who singled earlier in the inning. Next, sophomore Brynden Cleveland (Crestwood, Ill.) hit an RBI on a fielder's choice, giving the Falcons a 5-2 lead.

Sophomore starting pitcher Zach Slome (Schaumburg, Ill.) then completed the 1-2-3 inning to keep the Falcon's lead at 5-2 after three innings of play. 

The score remained 5-2 until the top of the eighth inning when the blue and white blew the game open. Josh Aguiniga and Brynden Cleveland quickly reached first and second base via a walk and hit by pitch. Johannes Haakenson then scored Aguiniga after reaching first on a fielding error by the Muskie's shortstop. 

The runs continued to add up when Tristan Largent hit an RBI single to right field, scoring Johannes Haakenson. The final and fourth run of the inning came courtesy of a sacrifice bunt, scoring Daniel Hahn, who was walked earlier in the inning, giving the Falcons a 9-2 lead. 

The top of the ninth inning saw the Falcons tack on six more runs. 

Jimmy Juergensen led off the inning with a double to right center. Junior Jack Owens (Chicago, Ill) came into pinch run for Juergensen and scored following a throwing error by the Lakeland third baseman in a failed attempt to throw out Josh Aguiniga. Aguiniga then scored from second following an RBI single from Brynden Cleveland. 

Later in the inning, with runs on first and second, Daniel Hahn doubled down the left-field line, scoring Cleveland. Another Falcon run came courtesy of a Lakeland passed ball, scoring Haakenson and advancing Hahn to third. Sean Tillmon then sored Hahn with a sacrifice fly RBI. 

With the bases cleared, Tristan Largent was walked and eventually reached third following a double down the right-field line from Kyle Flynn. Jack Owens then recorded his first hit and RBI of the year with a single to shortstop, scoring Largent from third, giving the Falcons a 15-2 lead. 

Sophomore Chris Rooney (Mundelein, Ill.) took the hill in the bottom of the ninth and closed out the game, facing only three batters, giving the Falcons the 15-2 win.

Starting pitching Zach Slome earned the win and improved to 4-1, pitching eight complete innings, giving up just one earned run, striking out five batters. 

On the offensive end, Sean Tillmon and Kyle Flynn both recorded two doubles, while Johannes Haakensen, Jimmy Juergensen, and Brynden Cleveland also had two RBIs. 

With the sweep, the Falcons move to 19-12 on the season and 11-6 in the conference.

The baseball team will quickly resume NACC play on April 30th, where they will host a doubleheader versus the Benedictine Eagles, with game one scheduled to start at 1 pm.
