Angelo hits for cycle as Montclair State takes down NJCU

Montclair, NJ - The Montclair State baseball team outscored New Jersey City University 19-2 over the first four innings en route to a 25-10 victory in New Jersey Athletic Conference play Friday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • NJCU took a 2-0 lead after the first half inning, but starter JACK HAVESON escaped further damage as he picked off a runner to end the frame. The Red Hawks responded with five runs of their own on just two hits. MATTEO PASCULLI had the lone hit of the stanza, delivering an RBI single.
  • Angelo extended the gap to 7-2, hitting a two-run homer in the bottom of the second. The team added six more tallies in the third, as Angelo laced a two-run double before ZACH STEARNS recorded a run-scoring triple. MAX MCLOUGHLIN finished off the barrage with a sacrifice fly to left.
  • The Red Hawks registered six additional runs in the fourth, as REECE MALEK and RYAN MCKENNA hit back-to-back home runs. Malek's was a two-run shot, and McKenna's was a solo. ANTHONY GUARINO notched an RBI single, with Pasculli chipping in an RBI double.
  • The Gothic Knights chipped away at the margin, tallying four runs in the fifth, two in the sixth, and two in the seventh.
  • Montclair polished off the scoring with a six spot in the eighth. With the bases loaded, Angelo capped off his big day with a triple to left field, plating all three runners.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Angelo became the second Red Hawk to hit for the cycle this season, joining McKenna, who did it against Lehman. The senior also knocked in a career-high seven runners.
  • Malek and McKenna are the first duo with back-to-back home runs since March 26, 2022, when PETER COSENTINO and JORDEN JURKIEWICZ did so against Baruch.
  • McKenna and Pasculli had four hits each, with Pasculli and Malek driving in three runners.
  • The pitching of Haveson, VINCENT DESANTIS, RYAN KRUG, and NICK DESIDERIO matched a season-high with 13 strikeouts.
