Hood's Impellittiere reaches 100 wins with split at Alvernia

READING, Pa. - With a 7-3 win in game two of Hood's Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth doubleheader at Alvernia, Blazer Head Coach Michael Impellittiere won his 100th career game. Hood fell to the Golden Wolves 9-4 in the opener. 

At the Plate

  • Keegan Brennan (Lake Wynonah, Pa./Nativity BVM) had a pair of two-hit games, going 4-for-7 with two doubles, a triple, a walk and two runs scored. 
  • Austin Rhue (Milton, Del./Cape Henlopen) went 3-for-5 over the doubleheader, scoring three times and driving in three. 
  • Kenny Sclafani (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) went 3-for-5. 
  • Matthew Stout (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) had three hits, including a pair of doubles and Tyler Schwarzman (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) scored three runs. 

On the Mound

  • Mason Sawyers (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper County) started and got the win in game two. He pitched around five hits and three walks in four innings, allowing just an unearned run. 
  • Aaron Heller (Philadelphia, Pa./Jack Barrack Hebrew Acad.) pitched the final three innings of the second game for the save. 
  • Joe Alexander (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County) got the start in the opener and allowed three runs on five hits and two walks in 4.2 innings. 
  • After Scott Ash (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) finished the fifth with a scoreless third of an inning, Kevin Nelson, Jr. (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp.) ran into trouble in the sixth. He allowed five runs, only one of which was earned, in 0.2 innings on two hits, two walks and hit batter. Joe Monteleone (Haddon Heights, N.J./Haddon Heights) pitched to three batters and allowed a run before Jim Ledford (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) escaped the jam. Ledford finished the game with 1.1 hitless innings of work. 

Alvernia 9, Hood 4

  • Trailing 1-0, Hood scored twice in the bottom of the third to take the lead. Rhue led off the inning with a base hit and scored on a Schwarzman single to tie the game. Brennan followed with an RBI triple into the gap in left center for a 2-1 lead. 
  • The Blazers stretched the lead in the fourth. Jacob Saylor (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) doubled, Cameron Day (Hagerstown, Md./Clear Spring) walked and Rhue was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Alex Jenkins (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) laid down a squeeze bunt to score Saylor to make it 3-1. 
  • The Golden Wolves tied the game in the top of the fifth. Billy Dougar doubled with one out and scored on a two-out single by Joe Glass. Glass tied the game when he scored on a Zach Rogacki double down the line in right field. 
  • The Golden Wolves broke the game open, scoring six runs on just three hits in the sixth. Three Alvernia hitters were hit by a pitch, three walked and an error extended the inning. Thomas Faggioni had a two-run single in the inning and Mike Ramundo added a double that knocked in two more as the Golden Wolves claimed a 9-3 lead. 
  • Hood scored a run in the bottom of the inning. Rhue reached on an error and later scored on another miscue by Alvernia. 

Hood 7, Alvernia 3

  • The Blazers fell behind in the top of the first but took the lead in the bottom half and never trailed again. 
  • After Glass walked and scored on an error for the Golden Wolves, Brennan led off the bottom of the first with a double down the left field line. Brennan scored on an error to tie the game and Schwarzman advanced to second. With one out and Schwarzman on third, Rhue executed another squeeze play for Hood for a 2-1 lead. 
  • Two more runs scored for Hood in the bottom of the third, thanks to four straight singles by the Blazers. Saylor, Stout, Amrit Brown (Asheville, N.C./Asheville) and Sclafani had hits in succession with Saylor and Stout scoring via RBIs by Brown and Sclafani for a 4-1 edge. 
  • An RBI single by Jason Lind pulled Alvernia within 4-2 before a three-run bottom of the sixth for Hood put the game out of reach. Brennan and Schwarzman singled and were sacrificed into scoring position by Patterson. Rhue made the move pay off, singling through the middle to score both runners. After another sacrifice, Stout ripped an RBI double to left center, extending the lead to 7-2. 
  • Connor Friedel, who scored the Golden Wolves' second run, drove in their final run with a single in the top of the seventh. 

For the Opponent

  • Friedel went 3-for-3 in the opener and added another hit in the second game for Alvernia. He drove in two. 
  • Kelly and Ramundo had three hits apiece over the doubleheader with Ramundo knocking in three. 
  • Matt Mays got the win in relief with the final 2.1 innings of work. He allowed an unearned run and struck out three. Matt Gehris was the first of five pitchers for the Golden Wolves and was charged with three runs, all earned, in 3.1 innings. 
  • Jack Cossa started and took the loss in game two. He allowed four runs on six hits and two walks in 2.1 innings. 

Notes

  • With weather adjusting all three games in the series, the Blazers played on their home field as the visitor on Friday and then played as the home team in both games on Sunday at Alvernia.
  • Hood moved to 11-11 overall with a MAC Commonwealth mark of 4-4. 
  • The Golden Wolves finished the day 16-8 and 10-3.
