Wheaton (Ill.) upsets North Central to open CCIW seasontakes over UAA lead

Caltech won their second SCIAC game 5-1 over Pomona-Pitzer with the Sagehens getting the split with a 17-4 win in game two. The two conference wins equals the number for the Beavers in 2022.

Wheaton (Ill.) hosted No. 16 North Central College for a CCIW doubleheader at Lee Pfund Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Thunder swept the Cardinals as the hosts convincingly won the first game 10-6 and the hosts won the second game 6-5. Wheaton has now its last four games. Wheaton won today's opening game 10-6 as the Thunder scored 10 runs, on 11 hits, with two errors and the Cardinals recorded six runs, on 11 hits, with two errors. Wheaton starting pitcher John McCraith (3-1) earned the win in five innings on the mound. McCraith allowed two earned runs, on five hits, with three strikeouts and one walk allowed. Caleb Vankerkhoff earned the save in four innings of relief. He allowed four runs, including two earned runs, on six hits, with one walk and two strikeouts. The Thunder earned a closely contested 6-5 victory in the nightcap. Wheaton scored six runs, on 12 hits, with one error and NCC scored five runs, on nine hits, with two errors. Thunder starting pitcher Nate Barker tossed 1-2/3 innings as he allowed four runs, including two earned runs, on five hits, with two strikeouts and one walk. Rutledge Feltel (1-2) had an outstanding outing in 5-1/3 innings of relief as he held the Cardinals to just one hit, with two strikeouts and three walks. Brendan Dyer picked up the save in two innings of relief as he allowed one run, scattering three hits, with three strikeouts and one walk.

Emory picked up another mercy rule win in conference play Saturday afternoon, handling Case Western Reserve by an 11-1 margin at Nobby's Ballpark in Cleveland, Ohio. Rain once again caused issue with the schedule, forcing a delay over 90 minutes at the start of the game and was the reason the slated second game of the afternoon was pushed to Sunday. Seniors Joey Bock and Ellis Schwartz were the stars in the second game of the series, leading the Eagles to the 10-run win in eight innings. Bock tied a career-high with nine strikeouts over his seven scoreless frames to win his second game of the year. He scattered five singles and only issued one free pass. At the plate, Schwartz had another big game with a 3-for-4 effort, collecting a double and home run and drove in four runs.

Wartburg started the weekend series against Coe with a 2-1 win at home in 11 innings. The Knights are now 7-8 overall and 2-4 in American Rivers Conference play. Wartburg led 1-0 after four innings of play. Coe tied the game after two hit batters and two walks in the top of the sixth, but Gavin Lund and Wartburg escaped a bases loaded jam to keep it tied at 1-1. Keaton Gray and Zach Walton singled in the bottom of the eighth, but Coe escaped a runners on the corners jam to send the game to the ninth still tied at 1-1. After a scoreless 10th, a wild pitch brought Sam Nicolino home to secure a 2-1 win.

Rochester met one of its oldest rivals in program history on Saturday afternoon, completing a sweep over visiting Hobart, winning 11-0 and 9-3, in a pair of Liberty League games at Towers Field. Saturday's twinbill was the first matchup between the schools since 1995, as Hobart recently reinstated the program as a varsity sport in the fall of 2021. Rochester and Hobart had met a total of 111 times entering the doubleheader, with the inaugural meeting taking place back in the 1895 season, a span of 128 years. The pair of wins move Rochester to 11-7 on the season and 3-2 in the Liberty League, stretching the teams win streak to three games. Hobart falls to 2-11 and is still winless in the conference, sitting at 0-5.

Marymount closed out their three-game set with Centenary on Saturday, taking the rubber match by a final tally of 8-7. Ryan Maylie put was the main run producer for the Saints in the win, knocking in four RBI across the day with his first homer on the season, the first home run in Capital One Park history. First-year Owen Mead earned his first save of his career, going 3.2 innings out of the pen with two strikeouts. LeTourneau finished off the series with a win over Mary Hardin-Baylor after dropping game one of the doubleheader on Saturday. LeTourneau (14-14, 8-7 ASC) dropped the first one 4-1. Cole Thompson went on to mark a career-high 4 hits in game two to lead the YellowJackets to a 4-2 win over Mary Hardin-Baylor (6-14, 4-11 ASC). UMHB struck first with a three-run homer in the first inning and took Saturday's opener, 4-1. UMHB started game two riding the momentum and found their way to score first in the bottom of the first with an RBI double from Rhett Grosz. The Cru did not go away as they found another run by the hands of Grosz when he brough one more in for the hosts in the bottom of the fifth. LeTourneau finished up their scoring in the top of the eighth when Thompson singled to bring Kyle Maysonave home to make it 4-2 after eight. Dalton Pickett started the game on the mound for the YellowJackets. He stayed out for 4.1 innings allowing just two runs on three hits.

Millsaps took down top-ranked Birmingham-Southern, 2-0 in Game Two at Twenty Field on Saturday. Holding No. 1 status in the D3baseball.com/NCBWA Top 25 Poll, BSC claimed Game One, 8-1. The Majors and Panthers battled late into the opening game, which saw BSC pull away with five ninth inning runs. The Majors led off the third with back-to-back hit by pitches and singled twice in the sixth, but the Panther pitching held tough. BSC tacked on five more runs in the top of the ninth to push their advantage to 8-1, and held on defensively in the bottom of the frame. The Majors responded in Game Two by defeating the nation's top-ranked team for the first time since March 4, 2017, when Millsaps downed Emory, 17-4. Senior Wil Wood, a member of the 2022 All-SAA First Team, tossed a complete, seven-inning gem. Wood held the Panthers scoreless and struck out six batters, while yielding just two walks and three hits. Junior Jackson Ware batted 1-for-2 with an RBI, while senior Sam Pitre scored a run and walked twice. Classmate Austin Arceneaux went 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Senior Caden Mathewson belted a go-ahead two-run home run during a three-run fourth inning for Buena Vista as the Beavers scored four unanswered runs to break a 2-2 tie and hang on in the end for an 8-5 American Rivers Conference victory at Loras to begin the three-game weekend series between the two teams on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Morgan Smith pitched seven innings for the Beavers, allowing four runs on 12 hits, en route to his fourth victory of the season. Logan Lape-Brinkman came on in relief to pitch the final two innings and was charged with the final run while allowing two hits and striking out three. Jordan Mathewson and Joel Garcia were also among the group with two hits and the duo also led the way with two runs scored each.

Led by 13 hits, and a .333 team batting average, Earlham defeated Anderson in game one of the weekend series 12-8 on Saturday afternoon. Dillon Fischer got the start at pitcher and threw five complete innings with five hits and five earned runs for the win. Nick Carrizales threw three innings with only one run on three hits before a ninth-inning jam. Cason Bennett finished the final frame with two strikeouts for the save. Nathan Lancianese led the offense with three RBI and two runs scored. The senior had two hits on the day. Max Fries had three hits for two RBI and a double, and freshman Ian Bullis knocked in two runs with two hits.

The Lynx began their 3-game series vs. the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels this afternoon, winning by a score of 11-6. Sophomore Mick Arney made an emergency start after a late scratch of Nick Ferazzi, and he did his job, pitching four and one-third innings and keeping the Lynx in the ballgame. The Lynx opened up their second game of the doubleheader just the way they drew it up, winning 8-1. Zac Sohosky notched another quality outing, pitching six innings, allowing only 1 run on 3 hits, while striking out 8. John Fears came in in the 7th and final inning, punching out 2 of 3, and completing the doubleheader sweep.

Vassar used a five-run seventh inning to earn its third straight victory as the Brewers defeated Oneonta 8-3 on Saturday afternoon. Vassar halted the Red Dragons' 13 game win streak. Senior Ryan Harris started on the mound for Vassar as he went four innings, allowing four hits, two runs, three walks and struck out three. Sophomore Pat Kerrigan earned the win in relief as he threw three innings and gave up two hits, one run, three walks and struck out three. Senior Bryce Grathwohl tossed two scoreless inning out of the pen for the Brewers. Sean Liquori took the start for Oneonta as he went 4.2 innings and allowed five hits, two runs (one earned), four walks and struck out two. Kyle Roper took the loss in relief as he tossed 1.2 innings, allowing four hits, five runs, walked one and struck out two. Derek Shea threw two scoreless innings of relief and struck out two for the Red Dragons.

William Peace took down Greensboro to win the series 2-1, winning game two 9-1 and game three 15-9. Brett Kemp would get the Pacers up 1-0 at the top of the 1st as Nick Tyler would score. In the 2nd, a single from Cameron Barefoot would increase the Pacer lead to 2-0. Greensboro would get on the board in the 4th with a ground-out bringing in a run for a 2-1 score. A single from Nick Tyler in the 5th would give the Pacers a 3-1 advantage. In the 8th, a triple from Cameron Butler and a single from Ian Turner would put WPU up 8-1, while a home run from Brett Kemp in the 9th would bring in 3 runs to help secure the 9-1 win. In game two, a sacrifice fly in the 6th for Hunter Ward would tie the game 9-9. Ward would bring in 3 runs with a home run in the 8th to give the Pacers a 12-9 lead. The Pacers would score another run on a passed ball for a 13-9 score, while a single from Ward in the 9th would secure the Pacers a 15-9 win.

Cal Lutheran won both games on Saturday, sweeping the series with Occidental. The Kingsmen won game one, 13-1, and game two, 12-4. Luke Wechsler pitched a complete game, Max Heverly hit a grand slam, Sebastian Smith smashed a two-run home run, and Jalen Parks added a solo shot. Wechsler pitched his second complete game as the Kingsmen got the mercy on Occidental after 7 innings. He struck out six Tigers and only gave up four hits and just one earned run. John Frazier got the start and went 4.1 innings. He gave up eight hits and four earned runs. Tristan Dupont came in for the next 1.2 innings and only gave up two hits. Max Kendall pitched the final 3.0 innings and only allowed two hits.

With the closure of Finlandia, UW-Stevens Point had an open weekend and traveled to St. Loius to take on Washington University. No. 18 UWSP (10-5) took a first inning lead and never looked back in a 7-1 win at Washington U (15-7) in the series opener on Saturday. Brenden Canterbury had three hits, including an RBI single in the top of the first. He drove in two on the day. Bradley Comer also had a pair of runs batted in with two hits. Casey Pickering was solid in the start, picking up his second win of the season. He went six with four strikeouts. Mason Weckler threw two scoreless innings in relief. Austin Syvertson struck out two in a scoreless inning of work.

US Merchant Marine led by five runs in the first game and three runs in the second game of a doubleheader against Old Westbury, but ended up being swept in Skyline Conference action. The Mariners saw a 7-2 lead turn into an 8-7 walk-off loss in game one before a 3-0 lead became a 5-3 game two defeat. In game one, USMMA sent 10 men to the plate as part of a six-run inning as the Mariners went up by a 7-2 score. Old Westbury chipped away at the USMMA lead, scoring once in the third and twice in the fifth before adding a run in the sixth to make it a 7-6 ballgame with one inning to play. A scoreless top of the seventh left the Mariners just three outs from victory, but the Panthers rallied for a pair of runs and walked-off with an 8-7 triumph.Game two remained tied until the bottom of the eighth when a leadoff walk set the table for a two-run home run that gave Old Westbury a 5-3 advantage.

Benedictine opened the home and conference portion of the schedule by sweeping Lakeland in cold conditions but bashed 11 homers in the process of winning a pair of shortened affairs 16-6 and 14-3. Benedictine finished with 36 hits, posting 18 in each affair. Tied at 4-4 following three innings, Benedictine put a five spot on the board in the fourth powered by a pair of two-run homers from Peter Turelli and Logan Gregorio along with a solo blast from Kevin Bushnell. Turelli would homer again in the sixth after Andrew Tenison deposited a solo blast in the fifth. Brennan Fisher got into the act with a two-run homer in the sixth as well as Benedictine scored in all of their visits to the plate. Nick Kosmetatos worked five innings to earn the win. Leo Corbett finished out the contest. Gregorio finished 5-for-5 at the plate. In game two Andrew Kurcz was the beneficiary of the run support, tossing a seven-inning complete game. Elevn of the 18 hits in the game went for extra bases as every member of the order prduced at least one hit.

George Fox played two games that had video-game-like numbers against the Whitworth Pirates on Saturday, losing the first,18-13 while winning the second, 11-10. The Bruins lost a high-scoring affair — managing to put up 13 runs, but couldn't overcome an 11-run first inning from the Pirates. The second game featured a dramatic ninth inning that saw the game go into extra innings where the Bruins pulled out a resilient win, 11-10, and split the doubleheader. The Bruins offense knew what to do in extras, as Jeremy Sangalang did what he has done all season – getting on base. The junior got on first after working a walk, and Shane White stepped into the box to pinch-hit for Fox. White worked some magic, hitting a go-ahead RBI double that gave the Bruins a one-run lead going into the bottom of the 10th. With the game on the line, the Bruins called on Alex Abbott – looking for redemption after the ninth inning – to close it out on the bump. Abbott came up huge, getting three outs (the last of which came with two runners on base for the Pirates) as the Bruins picked up the win, 11-10.

Lancaster Bible played the final game of their three-game conference series with Penn St. Abington on Saturday, winning 12-8. Following the win, the Chargers improve to 4-16 overall and 2-7 in the United East, while the Lions drop to 11-10 and 6-3 in conference play. The Chargers had 10 hits for 12 runs and 11 RBIs and the Lions had nine hits for eight runs and eight RBIs, The Chargers racked up four home runs while the Lions had five, Brian Coburn had five strikeouts on the mound, while Brandon Hightower had five as well, Blake Greenly went 2-4 with two home runs, four RBIs, and two walks, James Toney had two hits including a home run… Harrison Madagan had two hits including a home run, Brian Coburn got the win on the mound, allowing just seven hits and six runs.

Piedmont split a doubleheader taking game one 15-2 in seven innings against Berea before the Mountaineers had revenge with a 13-10 victory. It was all Lions in game one as it was a run rule victory in seven innings. While the offense was cruising, Bodie Eilertson kept the Mountaineers at bay allowing just five hits and two runs. Piedmont claimed an early lead in the first before the Mountaineers answered to tie it in the second. The Lions were able to score a pair of runs in both the third and fourth innings to take a 5-1 lead, and in the sixth, the flood gates opened. The Lions were able to score 10 runs on seven hits and four walks to make it a done deal and seal Berea's fate. Game two started off much the same as Piedmont had back-to-back two run innings to take a 4-0 lead after two. Starter Zeke Schwartz got rattled early after Jayden Junta blasted his second homer of the day. In the fourth inning however, the Mountaineers scored four runs and claimed an 8-5 lead and never trailed again. Piedmont pulled within one but Berea was able to keep the Lions at bay.

Cortland rallied from early 2-0 deficits in both games and the Red Dragons swept visiting New Paltz, 9-7 and 5-2, in a SUNYAC doubleheader at Wallace Field. Cortland extended its winning streak to nine games and is now 14-7 overall and 5-0 in the SUNYAC. New Paltz dropped to 6-11 overall and 0-5 in the conference. Cortland trailed 2-0 entering the bottom of the second but scored the game's next nine runs, including four in the eighth, to take a 9-2 lead. New Paltz, however, scored five times in the ninth and had the potential game-tying run at the plate before Cortland reliever Tommy Lynch entered and got a strikeout and a flyout to earn the save. New Paltz struck for two runs on three hits in the top of the first but were held scoreless on two hits over the final eight innings. Cortland starter Anthony Fusco gave up two hits, two walks and two runs and struck out one in a third of an inning. James LaBruno went the next six and a third innings and earned the win. He gave up no runs on two hits and four walks and struck out three. Shane Van Dam entered with two on and two out in the seventh and struck out a batter to end the inning with Cortland leading 5-2. He retired the side in order in the eighth and allowed only a leadoff single in the ninth and earned the save.

Keystone took both games of the doubleheader in their home opener 5-4 in game one and 21-1 in game two Saturday afternoon in CSAC action. With the sweep, Keystone moves to 10-9 (3-0 CSAC). Clarks Summit falls to 4-15 (0-3 CSAC). Robert Estrada, Griffin Yastremski, and Josh Parks both went 2-for-3 in game one. Greg Vernao, Chris Hadsall, Bobby Pokorney, Julio Acosta, and Jason Thomas also contributed with base knocks. Brayan Villar earned the start and the win as he went five innings with seven strikeouts. Logan Lixie pitched two innings of relief as he allowed no hits and two strikeouts for his second save of the season. The Defenders jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first and tallied another run in the fourth. Keystone scored one run in the first and third inning and used a two run fourth inning as well as an additional run in the fifth to secure the victory. Game two was a different story for the Giants as they exploded for 21 runs in the second game. The team used a nine-run third inning to help put this game on ice. Anthony Raimo contributed with two hits and three RBI. Estrada and Giovanni Diaz both enjoyed two hits as well. Yastremski was the winning pitcher in game two as he went three innings, five hits, one run, and three strikeouts. Anthony Mierez, Slothing Che, Cam Hale, and Jacob Shaw all appeared for an inning of relief.

Pacific Lutheran clinched its second straight Northwest Conference series victory today after cutting down crosstown rival University of Puget Sound 9-8 and 13-9 to sweep both ends of a doubleheader. In the process, Cole Trotignon hit his 23rd career home run to become the school's all-time home run king. The Lutes never trailed in the opening-game victory. The Lutes trailed 6-3 after five innings, but scored runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to tie the game, before exploding for seven runs in the ninth inning to complete the 13-9 comeback. "We competed our butts off today," said PLU Head Coach Nolan Soete. "Our offense put together a ton of quality at-bats. It was great to see Trotignon break the all-time home run record. He's a great kid and he's been absolutely huge for the program over the last three years. Chris Moreno did a heck of a job closing out both games. Overall, it was a great team effort."

Frankie Vasquez roped a walk-off RBI single to left field as Brevard (17-8, 7-1 USA South) split a USA South Conference doubleheader at Gil Coan Field with NC Wesleyan University (18-7, 7-1 USAS) on a very windy Saturday afternoon. Brevard pulled out a 12-11 victory in game number two to secure a doubleheader split with the Battling Bishops, as the two sides remain tied for first place in the USA South baseball standings through eight games on the conference slate. NC Wesleyan used offense in every single inning of play to pull away with a run-rule 14-1 victory in seven innings in game one, as the series will move to a rubber match game three tomorrow afternoon.

Marian (8-7, 1-1 NACC) earned a 9-2 win before falling in game two 4-3 in 10 innings against Dominican. Pitching dominated early but Marian was able to pull away after scoring eight runs in the final four innings. The Sabres ended any thoughts of a rally with an error bringing in a run in the seventh to open a dominating finish. Marian led for most of game two but Dominican was able to force extras and earn a split with a walk-off. After a quiet ninth, Dominican took advantage of an error in the 10th to salvage the split.

Lewis & Clark senior third baseman Jack Thomson became the program-record holder in career home runs on Saturday in a pair of back-and-forth one-run losses to Pacific University at George Fox University's Morse Athletic Field. Thomson annihilated a three-run home run onto the George Fox Softball Field, well beyond the right-field fence, for his program-record setting 40th collegiate homer. Saturday's doubleheader, which featured two of the top three teams in the Northwest Conference standings, was extremely competitive throughout the day. The Pioneers nearly came all the way back from a 9-1 deficit to take the opener. In game two, the Pios erased a 5-1 deficit, only for the Boxers to score the final three runs in an 8-7 setback.

Muhlenberg opened Centennial Conference play with a doubleheader split at McDaniel. After dropping the opener, 15-8, the Mules (8-12-1, 1-1) came back to win the nightcap, 5-3, behind the pitching of sophomore Jayden Barroqueiro, who struck out 11 in six innings to notch his first career complete-game win (the game was delayed by lightning in the top of the seventh and never resumed). Barroqueiro allowed only four hits. Two of them were home runs that accounted for all of the Green Terror runs, but both times he struck out the next batter. Barroqueiro struck out four straight batters twice in the game in recording the most whiffs by a Muhlenberg southpaw since 2005. The opening game was a slugfest that was tied 6-6 after three innings before McDaniel (13-8, 1-1) scored six runs in the fourth to build an insurmountable lead.

Lebanon Valley hit two home runs in each game and received strong pitching to finish off the season sweep of Albright with a pair of wins at McGill Field on Saturday afternoon.The Dutchmen won the opener 12-0 before a fifth inning homer by Jace Fetterman gave the team a 4-3 victory in game two. The Dutchmen (12-10-1, 8-1 MAC Commonwealth) scored the only run they would need in the first inning as Shane Stossel knocked in Nico Santoro on a grounder to second with runners at the corners and one out. Stossel knocked in five on two hits and scored twice. He earned his fifth win of the year on the mound with a complete game gem. The junior has now struck out 22 Albright batters in his last two starts against the Lions. LVC (13-10-1, 8-1 MAC Commonwealth) hit two home runs to win the second game after the Lions took an early lead. The Lions tied things up in the fifth with a run. Fetterman hit his second game-winning home run of the season at McGill Field with a shot to right in the bottom of the inning giving the Dutchmen a 4-3 lead with Jacob Detwiler on the mound. Detwiler shut down the Lions in the sixth and then Brendan Landry earned the save with a scoreless seventh.

Since returning to Wisconsin from their spring trip two weeks ago, Beloit team hasn't lost, going 6-0 since coming back to the Midwest. The Buccaneers won their sixth consecutive game Saturday afternoon, defeating Knox College 13-0 in seven innings, which helped them improve their perfect record in conference games to 5-0 on the year. Beloit (10-5, 5-0 MWC) put this game away early, scoring six runs in the top of the second inning to break a scoreless tie. Jack Alport drove in the game's first run with a single, which was followed by a two-run double by Matt O'Leary, and RBI from Garrison Ferone, Connor Vogel, and Brett Kiger. The Buccaneers added a seventh run in the third when Miles Souza scored on a wild pitch. Beloit finished with 17 hits in the game, led by Souza, who went 4-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored. Deven Irwin added three hits, while O'Leary and Kiger each recorded a pair of base knocks.

The University of the South baseball team picked up a doubleheader split on Saturday from Montgomery Field. Berry took the opener in a slugfest, 18-12, but the Tigers rallied to a 5-4 victory in the second game. In the bottom of the fifth in game one, after a Will Yarbro RBI triple, Mike Lewishall's third home run of the season made it an even game again at nine runs apiece. For the Vikings, the tie did not last long, as they had a three-run frame to make it a 12-9 advantage thanks to a long ball. Berry added six insurance runs in the eighth to secure the win, despite Sewanee's two runs in the bottom of the ninth on RBI plays by Alden Wright and Yarbro. In the second game of the twin bill, Berry got out to a 2-0 lead in the opening inning, but Sewanee chipped away from the deficit in the bottom of the second with a run. In the third, Sewanee saw four runs come across as they claimed the lead. Berry added two runs in the fourth on a two-run single, but that would be as close as they would get, as Matt Munn retired nine of the final 11 batters.

Elizabethtown started off their second weekend of Landmark Conference play with two wins, 7-4 and 7-1, over Moravian. Elizabethtown and Moravian swapped leads until the Blue Jays put up another run in the fourth to lead 5-3. The Blue Jays put up their final two runs in the eighth. Moravian scored their final run in the bottom of the ninth as Elizabethtown won, 7-4. Game two saw a similar score for the Blue Jays as they scored first in the top of the first ben Ben Watson led off with his fourth home run of the season. The Greyhounds scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly to right field. Etown continued to tack on runs until the game was called after eight.
