D3baseball.com Team of the Week

The Team of the Week is D3baseball.com's weekly honor roll, in its twelfth season of recognizing the top performers at each of nine positions from the previous week. Players are selected from nominations from their school's sports information directors. This is the tenth Team of the Week of the 2023 season.

Games of April 17-23, 2023

C  Jack Anderson, Sr., Case Western Reserve

Anderson batted .632 (12-for-19) during the Spartans' four-game sweep at Brandeis last week. Anderson finished the series with a .895 slugging percentage and a .667 on base percentage, scoring eight runs and driving in five with three doubles and a triple, and stealing two bases on a pair of attempts.

C  Jett Forrest, So., Hardin-Simmons

Forrest had a huge weekend as the Cowboys leapfrogged three teams into fourth place in the league standings with a sweep of LeTourneau. He was 6-for-10 (.600) and had five doubles and slugged 1.100 while driving in nine runs and scoring four. He also had a walk, was hit twice and had a sacrifice fly. He also caught all three games and shut down the YellowJackets running game gunning down 2-of-4 basestealers. LETU came into the weekend 83-of-107 in stolen bases.

1B  Landon Mokris, Sr., Greenville

Mokris posted an astounding OPS of 2.775 (8-for12, .667 batting average; 2.083 slugging) in Greenville's 4-0 week. He had home runs in three of four games, including two games with two homers. He ranks third in the NCAA in total RBI's (57) and fifth in RBI's per game (1.78).

2B  Noah Campanelli, Sr., St. John Fisher

Campanelli played in all five of SJU's game last week, having 22 at-bats and hitting 16 times for an avg of .727. Throughout the week, Campanelli hit four doubles, and one home run, and drove in six RBIs. Stealing 8 bases, Campanelli set the single-season record for stolen bases for Fisher. Fielding, Campanelli had a fielding percentage of 1.000

SS  DJ Perron, Sr., Mass.-Dartmouth

Perron batted .692 (9-for-13) and slugged 1.692 as he piled up six extra-base hits - including three homers - nine runs scored and seven RBI in a 3-0 week for the Corsairs.

3B  Shawn Steuerer, So., Johns Hopkins

Steuerer put together an impressive week at the plate, hitting .600 (9-for-15) with two homers and nine RBI. Steuerer had multiple hits in all four games for the Blue Jays last week, which included a three-hit game against McDaniel. Steuerer also homered in back-to-back games for the first time this season and he is tied for second in the conference in long balls with nine. He is also second in the conference in RBI's this season with 36.

OF  Matthew Cooper, Sr., Johns Hopkins

Matthew Cooper had another superb week at the plate, hitting .615 (8-for-13) with three homers and 10 RBI. Cooper's three homers last week helped him set the school's single season home run record with 18 on the season. He currently leads the Centennial conference in BAVG., homers and RBI this season. Cooper is second in the country in homers and top five in BAVG. 

OF  Thomas Evans, Jr., Hilbert

Evans was electric yet again this past week for Hilbert, hitting home runs in three of the Hawks' four games to help lift Hilbert to a 3-1 record. On Wednesday afternoon, Evans hit a pair of home runs at Alfred State. Evans finished the week batting .571 with an off-the-charts 1.643 slugging percentage and 2.310 OPS. The Orchard Park native finished the week with 8 hits including 3 doubles and 4 home runs. Evans scored 9 runs, added 7 RBI, drew a pair of walks and stole a base as well. Defensively, he posted a 1.000 fielding percentage, making 16 putouts over 16 total chances. Evans now leads the AMCC in runs scored (45), triples (5), extra base hits (30) and stolen bases (12).

OF  Jonathan LaGuire, So., Franklin

For the second straight week, LaGuire smashed five home runs while knocking in 12 and scoring 11 times with a .556 average over four games. He went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored in a 13-3 win over #14 Denison on Thursday, then tormented Rose-Hulman pitching over the weekend, going 8-for-14 with five long balls and 11 RBI as Franklin claimed a big HCAC series win over the Engineers.

OF  Ben Lavery, Sr., St. John Fisher

Throughout the week, Fisher played in five games. Lavery had 18 at-bats, hitting 10 times for an avg of .556. Lavery hit two doubles and five home runs, driving in 14 RBIs for a slugging percentage of 1.444. Fielding, Lavery had a fielding percentage of 1.000.

OF  Zack Mazza, Sr., Mount Union

Mazza had a monster week (8-for16, .500 at the plate) last week, including a pair of grand slams and two-home run games - totaling 10 RBIs on the week. During his offensive prowess, Mazza broke the school record for career home runs.

DH  Aidan Sullivan, Fr., Swarthmore

Sullivan batted .706 with 12 hits in 17 at bats. The first-year totaled four home runs, two triples and a double for a 1.706 slugging percentage.

SP  Dylan Beers, So., Cortland

Beers allowed only one hit and one walk and struck out six batters in six innings in Cortland's 4-0 win at Brockport. Beers improved to 6-1 on the season, including 5-0 in conference play, with the victory.

SP  Nick Choate, So., Anna Maria

Nick Choate was in complete command from the first pitch, striking out a career-high 13 en route to a 7-0 complete game no-hitter on Saturday April 22nd. The visiting Falcons only had two runners get as far as second base all game.

SP  Charlie Fleming, Sr., Denison

Charlie Fleming (7-1) limited Hiram to just two hits while pitching all seven innings to earn his first complete game and first shutout of the season in a 12-0 win in game one on Sunday. He struck out seven batters and did not issue a single walk as well. After a one-out single in the bottom of the third inning, Fleming picked off the runner at first base and then retired 13 batters in a row to end the game.

SP  Joseph Hartnett, So., Fitchburg St.

Posted an ERA of 0.00, allowing two hits and 16 strikeouts over 8.1 innings of work with a record of 1-0 in two appearances for the Falcons. Allowed no hits with six K's over 3.1 innings of work in a no decision in the Falcons 11-9 win over Worcester State on Tuesday before giving up just two hits with ten K's over five innings pitched to pick up the win in a 2-0, game two triumph against Bridgewater State on Saturday.

RP  Daniel Morgano, Sr., Allegheny

Morango pitched in three of Allegheny's four wins in an undefeated week against PAC opponents. He closed a 7-0 victory over Geneva with a 1-2-3 inning and two strikeouts. Next he saved a 3-2 win in the opener against Waynesburg after entering in the top of the ninth with two on and two out; came in after two consecutive walks and a 1-1 count mid-AB and struck out the final batter on three pitches. Finally he closed an 11-6 win in the nightcap against Waynesburg by retiring the side in order with a KL, foul out to catcher, and KS. In total, he struck out five without a walk or hit in 2.1 innings.
