Gustavus secures MIAC regular season title

After falling in game two, #2 Alvernia (27-16) walked off a 7-6 win over #3 Widener (22-20) in the decisive semifinal game three on Sunday at Alvernia to secure a trip to the MAC Commonwealth Championship. After Alvernia took game one of the best of three series yesterday, Widener evened the series at 1-1 with a 9-1 win to start off Sunday. Widener then led 6-2 in the fifth inning of game three before Alvernia scored five unanswered and walked the game off with an RBI double from Mike Ramundo to win the series and secure a trip to the MAC Commonwealth Championship at #1 Lebanon Valley.

St. Olaf handed Gustavus Adolphus College its first home loss of the season in game one before the Gusties secured the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season title with a late rally in game two on Saturday afternoon at Gustie Baseball Field. In the opener, St. Olaf (14-17, 9-8 MIAC) got a go-ahead two-run home run from sophomore Matthew Kulesa in the sixth inning to deal Gustavus (26-12, 16-4 MIAC) its first loss of the season on its home turf with a 4-3 win. The Gusties rebounded by putting together two three-run innings to claim a 10-8 victory in a back-and-forth game two.

Senior outfielder Max Pershin smashed a pair of home runs, the latter a 3-run shot to end the game via the mercy rule, as Ohio Wesleyan defeated Wabash 18-7 in the nightcap of a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday at Littick Field. In the opener, the Little Giants broke a 4-4 tie with 6 unanswered runs to take a 10-4 win. Ohio Wesleyan ended game two in the bottom of the eighth, with Padilla walking to open the inning and Vitense following with a single. Pershin then launched a homer to center to extend the Bishop lead to 18-7 and end the game on the run rule.

First baseman Logan Brewer crushed a walk-off three-run home run to give Lebanon Valley College a thrilling 5-4 victory over York (Pa.) on Sunday afternoon. The win provided the team with a sweep of the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth Semifinal series at McGill Field, advancing Lebanon Valley to the conference championship series. It appeared as if the Dutchmen and Spartans were headed to a series-deciding game three, as LVC was down to its final out when Brewer stepped up to the plate. The sophomore came through in the clutch, sending the club to its third consecutive MAC Commonwealth Championship Series with his eighth home run of the year. Several members of Lebanon Valley's lineup contributed to the win, as six players tallied hits and five scored runs. Lebanon Valley will square up against Alvernia who also advanceed on Sunday.

Penn State Altoona won the rubber match of this weekend's Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament first round, best-of-three series, as the number six seed Lions defeated number three seed Mount Aloysius College 10-4 on Sunday in game three of the series at Calandra-Smith Field. With the win, Penn State Altoona (17-25) advances in the AMCC Tournament, while Mount Aloysius (17-20) is eliminated. The Lions continue to the AMCC championship series, hosted by number one seed Alfred State College this Thursday, May 11 through Saturday, May 13. The Lions will be matched up against number two seed Penn State Behrend on Thursday at 4 p.m. for their first game of the championship rounds. The Lions earned a convincing win in game three on Sunday, carrying over their offensive momentum that was established in game two yesterday. Penn State Altoona produced 10 runs on 11 hits while limiting Mount Aloysius' scoring opportunities throughout the day.

The NJAC No. 5 ranked TCNJ Lions punched their ticket to the NJAC championship on Sunday with a 7-2 win over the NJAC No. 1 ranked Profs of Rowan University. Starter Jackson Malouf further proved why he was named First Team All-NJAC on the mound on Sunday. The sophomore southpaw threw six innings of one run baseball, allowing five hits and walking five while striking out five as well. Malouf was big in clutch situations as Rowan left nine baserunners on in those six innings. In the opening game on Sunday, Kean defeated Montclair State 11-8 to set up an elmination game between the Profs and the Cougars to decide who will meet TCNJ in the NJSC championship game. Kean won the final elimination game, 7-1, and will meet TCNJ for the NJAC championship on Monday.

Senior shortstop Cavan Brady drove in four runs and broke the school record for runs batted in for a season to lead the No. 8 and top-seeded Wheaton College (Mass.) over fourth-seeded MIT, 9-2, this afternoon in the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference Tournament at Sidell Stadium on the campus of host Wheaton in Norton, Mass. MIT made it to the final elmination game with a 13-2 win over Clark in the opening game on Sunday. Junior Brant Savage hit a three-run homer in the top of the first inning and classmate Tristen Spalter struck out nine over 8.2 innings of work to help third-seeded Babson College defeat top-seeded Wheaton College, 9-3. Wheaton and Babson will sqaure off on Monday in the championship game with the Lyons needing two wins.

Misericordia finished off a sweep of DeSales in the MAC Freedom Semifinals with a 13-5 win, Saturday at Tambur Field. The Cougars will advance to the best-of-three championship series at Arcadia, Friday and Saturday, May 12-13. Brock Bollinger and Connor Maryniak had three hits each and Brendan Gray had two hits and three RBI. Steve Rinda allowed just two earned runs over seven innings and Joe Valenti got the last five outs as the Cougars improved to 32-10. Misericordia will play Arcadia for the MACF title. No. 1 Arcadia advanced to the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom Championship, finishing off a semifinal sweep with a 3-1 win over No. 4 Stevens at Skip Wilson Field on Sunday afternoon. Alex Madera gave Arcadia the lead for good with a two-run triple in the seventh scoring Matthew Sot and Ryan Smolen. Nadell Booker earned the win with two scoreless innings while Hunter Sibley ptched the ninth to earn his seventh save. Zach Steiger started on mound, allowing one run on six hits with one walk and five strikeouts across six innings.

Husson began participation in the 2023 North Atlantic Conference tournament with a 8-6 comeback victory over Thomas College on Sunday afternoon at the Harold Alfond Diamond. The Terriers tallied four runs in the next four innings as they led, 6-3, into the bottom of the seventh. That is when the comeback bid was on as the Eagles scored two runs on five hits to make it a one run game through seven. Three more in the eighth put Husson in the winners bracket. They will meet SUNY-Cobleskill. SUNY Cobleskill opened the 2023 North Atlantic Conference Championship Tournament by easily outdistancing the Kangaroos of SUNY Canton by a 19-2 margin. Thomas will play the loser of the winners game. They staved off elimination with a 15-7 win, sending SUNY-Canton home.

Sophomore Aaron Lautenschlager went 2 for 4 with a homer, two runs and three RBI as fourth-seeded and 14th-ranked Randolph-Macon defeated fifth-seeded Hampden-Sydney 9-8 on Sunday afternoon to sweep the opening round series of the ODAC Championship. Roanoke and Shenandoah won their best-of-three series win two games. The Maroons defeated Washington & Lee 4-1 and Shenandoah defeated Guilford 7-6. After dropping their opener, Lynchburg bounced back with an 11-1 win to force a deciding third game. Rain in the area pushed this game into Monday when the two teams will meet at noon on Lynchburg's home field.

Piedmont escaped with a split Sunday to survive and advance to the CCS Championship Monday against Maryville. The Lions dropped the opener Sunday 6-2 to Maryville but won 8-5 over Huntingdon in an elimination contest. In the first game on SundayIt was scoreless then until the fourth inning when Maryville had a leadoff home run by Will Hubbell to take the lead. The Scots would add four total runs in the inning off four hits and two errors. The Scots threatened again in the sixth and added to their total to lead 6-1, but the Lions continued to battle. Piedmont scored one run on one hit in the eighth inning but stranded two and again left two aboard in the ninth. Piedmont fell behind 1-0, this time as the home team, as the Hawks scored on a sac fly in the first inning. Piedmont was quick to answer with four runs in the bottom of the frame to take the lead and never surrendered it.

Bowdoin scored eight runs in the final two innings, rallying from an eighth-inning deficit to defeat Wesleyan 10-4 in the decisive game three of their NESCAC Quarterfinal series Sunday. The Polar Bears (18-14) advance to the NESCAC finals site for the first time since 2013, and will play Tufts in the conference's double-elimination championship next weekend on the campus of Colby College. Senior Jimmy Evans posted a pair of RBI doubles, and added on a run-scoring triple for Tufts Sunday as the Jumbos earned a 12-5 victory in the New England Small College Athletic Conference Quarterfinal series game three in play from Sol Gittleman Park. Host Colby College will take on Middlebury College in the other contest Friday afternoon at 6 p.m. after Colby topped Hamilton College and Middlebury knocked off Trinity College Saturday.

Rochester completed a two-game sweep in the Liberty League Crossover Series, defeating Bard College 9-3 on Sunday afternoon at Towers Field. The series win advances Rochester (27-12, 18-3 Liberty League) to the Liberty League Tournament for the fifth straight season and eighth time in the last nine years. That event will be a four-team, double-elimination bracket taking place next Thursday through Saturday. For the second straight day, the Yellowjackets clubbed three home runs to power the offense. Ithaca also will play next weekend after the Bombers won the winner-take-all game in the Crossover Series at RPI on Sunday by a 13-5 score. Ithaca is now 25-14 on the season and will look to defend its Liberty League crown, which will be held at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs on May 11-13. The top five of the Saints order ran hot as St. Lawrence University took a 7-6 win over Union in game three of the Liberty League Crossover Series in Amsterdam, N.Y. The Saints improved to 13-20, while the Dutchmen fell to 15-23. Tynan Creagh led the Saints with two RBI in the game, while the two-through-five hitters for St. Lawrence all drove in a run a piece. Rochester Tech and Skidmore wrapped up their best-of-three series on Saturday.

William Peace completed a rally with a walkoff from Patrick Rogan in the bottom of the 9th to defeat Brevard 15-14 and secure their spot in the USA South Conference Tournament next week at N.C. Wesleyan. This marks the program's first Championship appearance as they also set a new program record for wins in a single season with 25. Patrick Rogan also topped the record book for most RBIs in a single season with 55. Brevard would post a big 7th inning with two singles and two doubles to take a big 14-7 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, a walk for Rogan and a sac fly for Dacunto would cut the lead to 14-9. The Pacers would come within one in the 8th as a double from Nick Tyler, a single from Rogan, and a single from Dacunto would bring it to 14-13. Josh Little would hold the Tornados at the top of the 9th, and a sac fly in the bottom from Brett Kemp would score Shy Thompson to tie it 14-14. The Pacers would load the bases, and a walkoff single from Rogan would score Dalton Frasier for the 15-14 win.

No. 11 nationally-ranked Denison University could not be
stopped in its quest to finish a perfect 16-0 in North Coast
Athletic Conference action this season. In the end, the Big
Red defeated Oberlin by scores of 5-1 and 18-9 in what was
their final two games of the regular season on Sunday. It
was the first undefeated conference season in the NCAC
since Wooster in 2007, and was the first 16-0 season in
conference history. Both Ohio Wesleyan University (2000)
and Wooster (2007) went 15-0 in their respective
undefeated conference campaigns.

An eighth-inning two-run home run off the bat of Danny Sheeler proved enough to lift second-ranked Salisbury past the Mary Washington Eagles, 4-3, in the regular season finale on Sunday afternoon at V. Earl Dickinson Stadium. Sheeler finished 1-for-3 with the go-ahead two-run home run in the eighth, his 10th big fly of the season. Sheeler becomes the second Sea Gull this season to eclipse 10 home runs, joining teammate Jacob Ference who leads the team with 11. This marks just the second time in program history SU has had two players hit double-digit homers in one season after Mike Celenza (12) and Ryan Smith (10) did so in 2009. The victory extends the Sea Gulls' winning streak over Mary Washington to 18 games. Salisbury last lost to the Eagles on Apr. 4, 2016.

Olivet ended its season with a thrilling 10-9 win over Alma  this afternoon at Klenk Park. The Comets broke a 6-6 tie with four runs in the top of eighth before the Scots answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Alma put two runners on base in the ninth but Olivet got out of the jam with an out at third base and flyout. Olivet totaled 13 hits in the game. Only one hit went for extra bases, and that was Hawkins' double.

Scranton (24-14) used an eight-run third inning to take control of the game and held on for a 13-8 victory over the Keystone College Giants (27-12) in the regular season finale for both teams on Sunday afternoon at Christy Mathewson Field. The Royals were then able to add a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth behind RBI singles from sophomore Jake Elston and junior Aidan Plick. Graduate student Ryan Heiser retired Keystone in order in the bottom of the ninth to preserve the victory. Sophomore righty Dominic Chieffalo retired the only batter he faced in relief and senior righty Hunter Ralston struck out one in a scoreless inning.

Saint John's (Minn.) ended its regular-season schedule with a doubleheader split at Augsburg on Sunday at Parade Stadium in Minneapolis. Four Johnnie pitchers combined to allow three hits as SJU (23-14, 14-6 MIAC) cruised to a 7-0 win in game one, but the visitors committed three errors and left 11 men on base in an 11-5 loss in the nightcap. Five of the 11 runs allowed were unearned. Senior Jack Haring broke the Johnnies' season record for pitching appearances with this 20th in the bottom of the fourth inning of game two.

No. 12 ranked Marietta College posted a convincing 17-6 victory over Otterbein University in the regular season finale for both schools Sunday afternoon at Dick Fishbaugh Field. The Etta Express scored in each of the first five innings building a 12-2 lead. Marietta added five insurance runs in the top of the ninth. Carson drove in his third run of the game with a double. Trent Valentine and Forrest Havanis each plated one with RBI singles, while Kail Hill knocked in one run with a sac fly. The Pioneers collected 20 hits in the game. Carson and Valentine each had four hits to lead the attack. Richter, Davis, Kaplin, Amburgey, and Yeager had two hits apiece.

The 22nd-ranked Catholic Cardinals plated four runs in the seventh inning on Sunday to earn a 7-3 victory over Juniata, taking the weekend series two games to one. Ross Natoli's team finishes the regular season with a record of 26-9 while completing Landmark Conference play with a record of 13-5. After Juniata tied the contest at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Catholic scored four runs on four hits in the top of the seventh in what would prove to be the difference in the 7-3 affair. Danny Fitzgerald picked up the win for Catholic, pitching 6.0 innings, allowing three runs, and striking out six batters.

Keuka College ended their 2023 season on a high note, defeating Elmira College 11-1 on Sunday afternoon at Kuhl Field. Senior Spencer Brown got the start on the mound for Keuka College (9-22, 4-13 Empire 8). Brown threw all seven innings and struck out eight for the win in his last start. Tyler Lewandowski, RJ Murphy, and Brady Booher each had three hits in the game for the Wolves. Keuka College leveled its all-time series with Elmira College. The Wolves are 8-8-2 against the Soaring Eagles. The 11 runs for the Wolves tied their season-high. Nolan Quinn finished the year a perfect 12-12 in stolen base attempts. The junior tied for fourth on the single-season list. His 12 steals is the most in a season by a Keuka College player since the 2010 season.

Franklin College brought the regular season to a close on Sunday afternoon, taking on the Defiance Yellow Jackets on Senior Day at Center Grove HS. The Grizzlies (30-10, 18-4 HCAC) capped off the regular season with a sweep of the Yellow Jackets (4-34, 1-21 HCAC), taking game one 13-3 in seven innings and game two by an 8-2 score. Between games, the program honored its two seniors playing in front of a home crowd for the final time in Jonathan LaGuire-Cruz and Sean Thomas.
