Top seeds in LEC roll on Wednesday

The CSAC Championship opened up with a bang as No. 2 Wilson defeated No. 3 Cairn in the first game of the double elimination tournament. The Highlanders jumped on top early with a pair of home runs in the first inning, but the Phoenix came back to score runs in all but two innings to take the win.

The defending conference champion and second-seeded ECSU Warriors (31-10) scored nine consecutive runs on their way to defeating fifth-seeded UMass-Dartmouth (19-18) on the first day of the six-team, double-elimination Little East Conference tournament for the two teams, 10-3, Wednesday at Pontarelli Field on the campus of top seed Rhode Island College. Ranked 14th nationallly, Eastern faces third-seeded University of Southern Maine (18-19) Thursday at 2 p.m. in a winners' bracket game. USM routed fourth-seeded University of Massachusetts Boston (22-17), 14-4, in Wednesday's third and final game. The game was halted after seven innings due to the ten-run rule.

Taking on Illinois Wesleyan University on the opening day of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament, North Central College used a seven-run sixth inning on their way to a 15-5 victory on Wednesday afternoon. Jason Shanner picked up his fourth win of the season as he went six innings with four strikeouts while allowing five runs in his 101 pitches. Davis racked up three hits and four RBIs on the day while Lehnen, Scumaci, Marinec, and Fitzpatrick posted two hits each. All nine batters in the starting lineup scored at least one run in the game. No. 1 seeded Augustana defeated the No. 6-seeded Carroll Pioneers by an 11-1 score in eight innings on Wednesday to kick off the CCIW Tournament. Josh Wintroub earned his seventh win, tossing 6.1 innings and striking out 11 batters while allowing just one run. The Vikings outhit the Pioneers 15-4, paced by Matt Ozanic and his 3-4 effort with four runs batted in. Millikin churned out the highest run total in a CCIW Tournament game since 1998 and the largest margin of victory in a CCIW postseason game since 1993 in Wednesday’s 19-4 win. MU batted around twice in the bottom of the first inning, sending 19 batters to the plate to build a 14-0 lead. The Big Blue collected 11 of their 21 hits in the first inning. Liam McGill, Andy Niebrugge, Tommy Shaw and Ryan Janssen had three hits apiece in the win. Sixteen of Millikin’s 21 hits were singles. Niebrugge and Cayden Silvester homered.

The two early home runs gave Cairn an early 4-0 lead. Cairn added to its lead with a solo run in the second and the score stayed there until the Blue and White started to generate some momentum in the bottom of the fourth, scoring 12 unanswered runs through the eighth inning. Doc Daniels finished the day 4-for-5 with four RBI and three runs. His home run was his fourth of the year. The four RBI also matches a season-high previously set against Clarks Summit. Gerald Buchanan, Alex Seidleck and Jordan McKenzie all had three-hit games to also lead the Phoenix. Buchanan finished with three RBI and two runs scored. Seidleck scored a season-high four times and McKenzie circled the bases twice. Wilson will play Keystone with Cairn getting a date with St. Elizabeth.

Junior Tyler Reistetter tossed 8.0 scoreless innings as part of a combined shutout and fifth-seeded USMMA advanced to the double elimination round of the Skyline Championship with a 13-0 triumph against fourth-seeded Old Westbury. USMMA improved to 25-14 with the win, while Old Westbury dropped to 19-18. Reistetter racked up eight strikeouts, while scattering seven hits to improve to 6-3 on the season. Senior Jared Chambers finished 4-for-5 with three runs scored to help pace the offense, while freshman Ernest Darling was 3-for-5 with two RBI and three runs. Sophomore Garrett Clapsaddle and freshman Charles Cahalan each finished 2-for-5 with two RBI, and sophomore Travis Leatherwood went 1-for-5 with a two-run double. Purchase prevailed in the First Round of the playoffs Wednesday evening, topping the College of Mount Saint Vincent in a pitching dual, 2-1. The win was fueled on the mound by Myles Scarry, who tossed his seventh complete game this year, and at the plate by Jemal Betances, who scored both runs and hit the go-ahead home run in the top of the eighth. While Purchase emerged victorious, the early portion of the game favored the hosts, as they scored their lone run of the contest on a solo homer in the second inning. On the mound, the Dolphins' ace Andrew Geiger was dealing too, as he finished with 17 strikeouts and allowed just one hit through the first five innings. Despite the dominance of the hosts early on, Scarry, who pitched on just three days rest, kept the Panthers in the ball game.

Cabrini rallied for three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning Wednesday afternoon as the Cavaliers topped Marymount University 5-4 in comeback fashion in the first round of the 2023 Atlantic East Conference championship tournament. In the bottom of the eighth, head coach Nick Weisheipl called on junior Jon Sepe to pinch-hit with the bases loaded, down by one run. Sepe delivered with a first-pitch-swinging two-run single up the middle to plate the tying run in Zack Brook and what proved to be the winning run in pinch runner Keegan Miller to put the Cavs ahead 5-4. Immaculata opened up the Atlantic East Conference tournament with a 15-1 victory over Neumann. Jason Hughes picked up his ninth win of the season, going six innings of no-hit baseball while racking up eight strikeouts. The Mighty Macs used a six run 5th inning to pull ahead for good. With Theisen, Justin Klemick, Jay Lawrence, Maddox Stern and Josh Crowding all drove in runs in the inning. Struble would score in the 6th inning on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 10-0. As a team, Immaculata tallied 19 hits on the afternoon, with seven going for extra bases.

Roger Williams came away with a 5-3 victory on Wednesday over Nichols in the first matchup of the double elimination play. Lucas Lariviere pitched 5.1 innings of one hit ball with four walks and three strikeouts, giving up a lone unearned run. Brett Lauterbach came up with the win in relief going 2.0 innings in the contest with a hit and a walk. Matt Falvey went three for five at the plate with an RBI and Owen Hibbard also added a pair of hits in the contest. Christopher Flynn had four RBIs in the contest. Top seeded Endicott defeated Suffolk 9-2. Tied 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth, the Gulls exploded for four runs and never relinquished their lead the rest of the way. They join Salve Regina, a 10-7 winner over New England College, in the winners bracket with Roger Williams.

Kalamazoo began the MIAA Tournament with a home game against Hope on Wednesday afternoon. The Hornets jumped out in front and fought off a comeback attempt by the Flying Dutchmen, winning 12-7. This win improves Kalamazoo's record to 31-9, tying the 2017 team for the most single-season wins in program history. Jacob Davis (5-4) got the win after going three and a third innings in relief, allowing four runs on four hits and a walk in the sixth inning. However, he returned to throw a scoreless seventh and ended up with two strikeouts. Kalamazoo regained the five-run lead with four runs in the seventh inning. The Hornets scored two more runs in the eighth on another RBI single by Bolton, and then David Stechow scored on a fielder's choice. Brenden Oprinski pitched the final two innings, allowing two runs on two hits with a strikeout. Alma defeated Adrain 7-5 in the final MIAA game of the day. Adrian opened with two runs and Alma answered with scores in each of the first five innings to move into the winners bracket game with Kalamazoo.

No. 2 seed in the NCCAA Mideast Regional Asbury (23-15-1) dropped game one 4-12 to Oakland City (No. 1) and then fell 1-3 to Kentucky Christian (No. 3) on Wednesdsay in Wilmore, Ky., to close their 2023 season. Asbury's offense was held to only ten hits and five runs combined on the day. Junior Colton Perkins had three hits with a double and an RBI against Oakland City while junior Kaden Dugle had two hits and a double against Kentucky Christian. Cayden Devine was a highlight on the mound for AU with 5.1 innings pitched against KCU with seven strikeouts and no runs.
