Pericolosi picks up win 500 with sweep over Caltech

CLAREMONT, CA. – Head Coach Frank Pericolosi picked up his 500th win as the Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team earned their first SCIAC sweep of the season with their doubleheader win over Caltech by the scores of 11-3 and 15-1 on Friday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Season Impact: With the wins, the Sagehens improved to 22-6 and 10-2 in SCIAC play.

Pomona-Pitzer 11, Caltech 3

The Sagehens were led by JC Ng who went 2-3 with three RBI in the win. William Kinney and Jimmy Legg also had two hits for the Sagehens while Greg Pierantoni, Nate Jakobs, Jack Gold, and George Nahabedian had one.

Hannoh Seo got the start in game one of the doubleheader and went 4.2 innings, and gave up two runs with four strikeouts for the no-decision. Eric Prough came in and picked up his third win of the season with 4.1 innings one earned run and two strikeouts.

The Sagehens' offense took a while to get going against the Beavers, but they managed to get one run in the bottom of the second off of a wild pitch and one more in the bottom of the fourth from a bases-loaded walk to take a 2-1 lead.

Caltech tied the game in the fifth to make it 2-2 and put some pressure on the Sagehens' offense, but Pomona-Pitzer responded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth with RBIs from Nahabedian, Kinney, and Ng to take the lead back at 6-2.

Ng tripled home another run in the bottom of the seventh to make it 7-2 while the Sagehens plated four more in the bottom of the eighth to just miss the run rule to take game two of the series over Caltech.

Pomona-Pitzer 15, Caltech 1

The Sagehens were led by Pierantoni who went a perfect 3-3 in the game with two runs scored. Ng, Kim, Jakobs, and Jimmy Legg all collected two hits while Kinney, Ben Cohen, Nahabedian, and Peter Savas picked up a hit as well in the win. Ethan Collins got the start in game two and picked up the win with five innings, two hits, and seven strikeouts. Wade Lawson came in with one inning of relief work while Jake Albro closed out the game.

The Sagehens had a monster start to game two after they got all their runs in the first two innings of the game with four in the first and 11 in the second inning. Jakobs doubled home two runs to start the scoring streak for the Sagehens while Pierantoni scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-0. The Sagehens ended the first after a Legg RBI single to make it 4-0 after the first inning of play.

Pomona-Pitzer blew the doors off the game in the second inning with 11 runs for their second-highest scoring inning of the season outside of their 13-run inning against Redlands. Kim started the scoring with a bang for his seventh home run of the year before Jakobs tripled home another run, Legg hit an RBI single and back-to-back RBI doubles from Nahabedian and Ng. Ng then came around to score on a wild pitch while Kim drove in another run and Lateef Wakil got an RBI off of a hit by pitch to push the lead to 15-0.

Caltech did end up getting a run home to avoid the shutout in the bottom of the fifth, but the Sagehens were able to ride their early lead to a SCIAC season sweep over the Beavers to give Coach Pericolosi 500 wins in his career.
