Case earns series win on Easter Sunday

Case Western Reserve University defeated Emory University 18-6 in seven innings on Sunday afternoon in Atlanta to secure a win in the team's opening University Athletic Association series of the season.

The Spartans took three of the four games in the series to improve to 17-6 overall on the year, while Emory fell to 14-12 with the loss. CWRU's win, combined with a loss by WashU to NYU on Sunday, put the Spartans and the Bears in a tie for first place in the league standings after one weekend of play.

Graduate student first baseman Dane Camphausen put an exclamation point on the first UAA series of his career, going three-for-six with two runs, six RBIs, a home run, and a double on Sunday. He hit .600 (six-for-10) with two doubles, two home runs, and 13 RBIs over the weekend, despite playing in just three games.

Junior right fielder Nick Harms added a three-for-four performance at the plate with three runs scored, four RBIs, a home run, a double, and two stolen bases. Powers went three-for-five in the game with four runs, two RBIs, and a walk, raising his team-leading batting average to .384. Graduate student catcher Jack Anderson went two-for-four with four runs, two RBIs, two walks, and a stolen base.

As a team, the Spartans totaled 16 hits and drew 13 walks on Sunday.

Russell Sage College used a 31-3 mercy-rule victory to complete the sweep of its three-game weekend series against Alfred on Sunday afternoon. The Gators (9-8) combined 14 hits with 18 free passes on Sunday to complete a 65-run Easter weekend series.

Junior infielder Dom Caminitti fronted the RSC offense driving in four runs and scoring three of his own. Junior outfielder Brendan Espinal continued to shine in the young campaign with a two hit, three run, and three RBI performance.

Junior infielder Jeff Stearnes and outfielder James Lubanski, a grad student, each tallied two hits. Stearnes drove in three runs while Lubanski brought home two.

Junior outfielder Evan Grimes contributed a 2-2 performance off the bench, including a 6th inning RBI-triple.

Joe Degroot, a grad student, got the nod on the mound, throwing a strong four innings only giving up three hits and striking out four. The win his third pitching victory of the season.

Alfred (1-11) had five players with a hit, including doubles from Benjamin Weimer and Cameron Brought.

New York University scored early, scored late, and utilized strong pitching to capture the final game of its weekend series at Washington University in St. Louis. After dropping the first three games, the Violets (14-6, 1-3) shutout the Bears (17-9, 3-1) 12-0 on Sunday in St.Louis, Mo.

NYU scored three runs in the first inning and nine in the seventh, and Andrew Reid hurled a complete-game three-hit shutout to propel the visitors to their first University Athletic Association win of ther season. "It surely was a needed win," said Head Coach Doug Kimbler. "We played hard all weekend."

Connor Ruggero's two-RBI single was the main producer in the three-run first.

Ruggero also had an RBI single in the nine-run seventh, but the big blow was Cam Dunn's three-run home run. Dakota Barbet also had a two-RBI single in the frame.

During those innings and everywhere In between, Reid was dealing. He only allowed four base runners in his seven innings, three hits and a walk. Now 3-0 on the season, Reid struck out four and now has 24 strikeouts in 25 innings.

Nick Argenziano contributed two hits and scored three runs. Richard Beggy also had two hits and scored two runs.
