Corsairs' Lights-Out Pitching Leads to Sweep of Southern Maine

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Powered by two complete-game shutouts from starting pitchers Ryan Qualey and Adam Maher, including a career-high 14-strikeout, no-hitter from Maher, the UMass Dartmouth baseball team swept Southern Maine by a score of 5-0 in both contests.  The Corsairs improved to 7-10 overall and 2-0 in LEC play, while the huskies slide to and are now 0-2 in conference action.

With his performance in game two, Maher became the only pitcher in DIII baseball to throw a 9-inning no hitter this season. It marks his second-career no-hitter with the Corsairs, with his first coming against Colby in 2023.

The Corsairs struck again in the third inning with a solo-homerun over the left field fence

UMD added to their lead in the fifth, when freshman shortstop Cooper Wixon started things off with a leadoff single. After advancing to third on a single from senior catcher T.J. Keefe, Wixon was brought in by junior second baseman Devyn Vezina for his second RBI of the game. The Corsairs added to their lead on a sac fly from junior outfielder Chance Checca in the sixth inning, before Wixon drove in another in the eighth that gave the Corsairs their 5-0 lead as Maher continued to shut down the Huskies' bats.

The Corsairs saw Checca go 2 for 3 with an RBI. Wixon was 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. SanAntonio went 2 for 4 with an RBI as well. Vezina was 1 for 4 with two RBI's, including his first homerun of the season. Maher earned his second win of the season in spectacular fashion with no runs, no hits and 14 strikeouts.

Game one saw the Corsairs jump out to a 2-0 advantage through the opening two innings, including an RBI double by grad student DH Joe Muzio that brought in Vezina. Qualey set the tone from the mound early, having himself a day with a shutout of his own on just five hits with 11 strikeouts.

The Corsairs built onto their lead in the fifth, beginning with a leadoff single from sophomore outfielder Brett Baker. After advancing to second on a sac bunt, Baker scored from seconf on a Muzio RBI single through the right side of the infield. Muzio stole second before being drove in by senior catcher Matt Tempone to put UMD up 4-0 through five innings.

Qualey put the game away for the Corsairs by retiring nine of the final 10 batters in the last three innings, as UMass Dartmouth took a 5-0 win in game one.

In game one, the Corsairs saw Muzio go 2 for 4 with two RBI's and a run scored. Tempone also had a two-hit, two-RBI game. Senior third baseman Andrew Possi went 2 for 3 and scored a run. Checca led the contest in hits, going 3 for 4 for the game.
