Down big in the ninth, no problem for Case Western

Whitworth dominated visiting Linfield 16-5 complete a Northwest Conference baseball series sweep on Senior Day Sunday at Paul Merkel Field. Whitworth now sits at third place in the conference standings at 24-11 overall and 12-9 in NWC play. Linfield fell to 18-20 on the season and 11-12 in conference play.

Case Western Reserve University, ranked 15th in Division III, overcame a seven-run deficit entering the bottom of the ninth inning at Nobby's Ballpark in Cleveland on Sunday, winning the game 12-11 on a walk-off two-out, two-run single by graduate student catcher Jack Anderson. The Spartans improved to 30-9 overall with the win, marking just the third time in program history that the team has notched 30 wins in the regular season. CWRU also matched a University Athletic Association record for conference wins in a season, finishing their league slate with a 13-3 record. The Spartans, who took three out of four games from the Bears, clinched the conference title on Friday afternoon. CWRU scored eight runs in the bottom of the ninth to complete the improbable comeback. Anderson, hit the first pitch of his at-bat up the middle, scoring two runs and giving CWRU the walk-off win.

Brandeis University first-year shortstop Matt Chafin delivered a two-run triple in the top of the 10th inning as the Judges came from 7-2 down to defeat host Emory, 10-8, for the Judges' first win over the Eagles since 2008. In the top of the 10th, Eddie Zanor led off with a single up the middle. He was bunted into scoring position by Tobei Nakajima, and Dylan Walsh was intentionally walked. After a called third strike got the Eagles the second out, Chafin delivered the game-winning triple, blasting a 3-2 pitch to center field and scoring both runners after the centerfielder dove for the ball. In the bottom of the 10th, Marc Maestri walked the leadoff hitter, who moved to second on a wild pitch. Maestri took care of the next two outs, getting a called third strike for the first and snaring a line drive back up the middle for the second. Emory singled to put runners on the corners, but Maestri got a can-of-corn fly to center to end the game. The Judges had not defeated Emory since the 2008 season when the UAA tournament was held in Florida. This was their first win on campus against the Eagles since the conference started playing four-game series in 2017. The Judges snapped a 37-game losing streak in the series.

Whitman College could not have picked a better time to sweep its first Northwest Conference series. Jack Bickerton's three-run homer erased an early deficit as the Blues took one step closer to a conference title, taking all three games against Lewis & Clark with a 5-3 Senior Day victory on Sunday at Borleske Stadium. The win puts Whitman (24-13, 15-6 NWC) one win away from clinching the regular season title outright and hosting its first-ever postseason tournament. The Blues will need to get it at second-place Willamette as the two teams will both vye for a conference title when they open up a three-game series next weekend to close the regular season. After his rough first inning, Mateus Conaway (5-4) settled in and pitched a beauty. He pitched seven straight scoreless innings and struck out nine batters in eight complete innings. Wall came on to pitch a scoreless ninth for the save.

After dropping the opener by a 14-7 score, the Franklin Grizzlies (18-17) rallied to take game two 10-9 from the Tigers (20-13), scoring five times in the sixth to erase a four-run deficit. Both games were seven-inning affairs. Garrett DeHart kicked off the scoring with an RBI double in the first. Franklin answered a three-run DePauw second with five runs of their half of the inning. AJ Sanders knocked in two with a single and Sean Sullivan capped the scoring with a three-run home run to make it a 6-3 game. But the two offenses went in opposite directions the rest of the way, with the Tigers scoring 11 times over the 4-6 innings with Franklin managing just a fifth inning RBI single from Dyllan Redmon. DePauw opened a 9-3 lead when the Grizzlies came to bat in the fifth. With the game slipping away, the Grizzlies got back within striking distance in the fifth with Reed and Taylor both drawing bases loaded walks. In the bottom of the sixth, Sullivan got another run back with an RBI double and two batters later, Garrett DeHart stepped to the dish with two on and the sophomore crushed a game-tying three-run home run. Franklin completed the comeback five batters later, when Taylor came in to score on a wild pitch for the winning run.

Senior first baseman Nolan Lutz and freshman outfielder Andrew Miko collected four hits apiece to back a strong start by freshman pitcher Bobby Budacki in a 9-1 road win over the University of Mount Union in non-conference play Sunday at Rafeld-Rogers Baseball Field. The win is the seventh-straight for the Presidents. W&J is now 25-9 overall in 2024. The loss drops Mount Union to 24-13. This marks the second-straight Sunday that W&J has picked up a non-conference win over a strong program from the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Presidents beat Marietta by a 9-7 score seven days ago. Budacki worked five strong innings to pick up his first collegiate win. The freshman allowed just one run on four hits. Junior pitcher Alex Tomsic tossed two scoreless innings of relief while junior Nate Hess and sophomore Jake Stiehl worked scoreless eighth and ninth innings, respectively.

It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon when the Allegheny College demolished Saint Vincent College in its final road conference games of the regular season. The Gators (22-11, 13-5 PAC) mercy-ruled the Bearcats (10-24, 7-11 PAC) in both games, with the opener finishing 15-5 and the nightcap 16-5. With the two wins, Allegheny clinched a top-four seed in the upcoming Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament. The breaking point in game one came in the fifth inning. Allegheny plated six runs, four unearned, on a pair of Bearcat mistakes defensively to take an 11-2 advantage. Allegheny's bats stayed hot in the final game. The Gators scored 10 runs in the first three innings to blow the doors open, setting them up for the win.

Catholic completed a 5-0 week with a 16-7 victory over Lycoming as it celebrated Senior Day on Sunday. The Cardinals win streak is now seven games as they improve to 29-9 on the season with two games left in Landmark play. The Cardinals turned 15 hits and seven walks into 16 runs on Sunday afternoon with massive days at the plate once again from Zach Burton and Logan Eilbacher. The pair combined for eight hits, nine RBI, and five runs scored. Luke Cardman picked up the win, tossing 4.0 innings in relief and striking out six. Ryan O'Keefe pitched 2.1 scoreless innings and struck out six as well. Burton continues an unbelievable graduate campaign as he moves up the Catholic record books in multiple categories. Burton's 15th double of the season puts him in a tie for eighth in the DIII era in Catholic history while he and Eilbacher both enter a tie for fifth in home runs in a single season with eight. Eilbacher now sits seventh in slugging percentage while Burton sits eighth.

Nichols College continued to break record this season, as they entered uncharted territory with their 25th and 26th wins of the season, as they swept Lasell University in a pair of seven inning games. The Bison won game one 3-0 and the second 8-5 on Sunday afternoon from the Nichols Baseball Field. Senior Brennan Hyde hit another home run in the first game, as he went 3-6 on the day, with four RBI and two runs scored. Teammate Ben Jerome was also 3-6 on the day with an RBI and three runs scored. Sophomore Liam Flynn hit his third home run of the season. The Bison entered the record book as a team twice in today's doubleheader. With the win in game one, the Bison earned their 25th win of the season to break the win record set by the 2016 team that won 24 games. The team also broke the single season home run record (33) with their 34th and 35th home runs of the season, breaking the tie with the 2022 team.

Adrian College hosted Wittenberg University on Sunday afternoon in a non-conference contest. The Bulldogs swept a doubleheader against Wittenberg earlier in the season on the road, before completing the three-game sweep on Sunday, winning 7-1. Adrian came out ahead, 7-1. In the eighth, Adrian added four runs to pull ahead 7-1. Joe Casale drove in a run on a double before scoring on a triple from Nic Bruder. Rolando Jimenez reached third base on an error by the right fielder which allowed two more Adrian runs to come across the plate. The Bulldogs pitched by committee on Sunday where seven pitchers entered the game.

University of Chicago wrapped up their three-game series with Grinnell and looked to take the set in the rubber match. The Maroons responded quickly after the Pioneers got on the board in the third and had another big frame in the eighth as they win on Sunday by 8-3. Grinnell (14-20, 7-11 MWC) started the scoring in the top of the third inning, but University of Chicago (16-20, 15-6) was quick to respond in their half of the stanza. With two on, Jackson Slipock drove the ball over the left field fence for a three-run homer, a hit that proved to be the game winner. The Maroons pitching was once again stellar and saw Phil Hogan and Kirk Waller combine for almost eight innings of one run, four hit ball. Sam Klanot and David Flanagan also contributed to the effort out of the pen as Waller recorded his fifth win of the season. UChicago got some insurance runs in a big eighth inning where they sent all nine batters to the plate and scored five runs. The big strikes in the frame were an Erik Rindner double that scored two and a Richard Lu triple that plated the same amount, including himself as he'd come in to score on an errant relay throw. The Maroons tallied ten hits in total and won their 15th Midwest Conference game of the season with an 8-3 victory.

Ohio Northern defeated Oberlin 9-4 in a non-conference tilt to extend its winning streak to eight games on Sunday afternoon. Ohio Northern scored six runs in the top of the second inning and made it stand up for the win. Junior Sam Thombs went 5.0 innings on the hill to earn the win and improve to 3-3 on the year. Junior Blake Altaffer threw 4.0 shutout innings to earn his second save of the season. Northern is in a third place tie with Marietta in the OAC regular season standings with 10-6 records. ONU will clinch a spot in the 4-team OAC Tournament with one win in its regular season-ending double header at home with Heidelberg on Saturday.

Junior Evan Taylor and graduate student Jordan Mathewson combined to go 8-for-10 with seven RBI's while Ean McDaniel pitched seven strong innings, and Buena Vista University capped off the series win on Sunday afternoon with an 11-3 victory over Loras College. BVU was clinging to a 5-2 lead entering the bottom of the sixth when rain began to fall for the first time in the game. That didn't faze Taylor at all as he launched an opposite field 2-run home run to left during a steady rain that made it a 7-2 margin. He was then in the middle of a four-run seventh inning by scorching an RBI double to the gap in right center and then stole third, and as the throw down from the catcher hit off the batter and rolled over in front of the home dugout, allowing him to score and make it 11-2. Loras was able to scratch across a run in the ninth when Jake Zeal grounded into a double play while the Duhawks stranded a runner at third to end the game.

Freshman righty Matt Holgado allowed just one run over six plus innings and Scranton (26-9, 15-7 Landmark) completed the series sweep of Moravian with a 10-2 victory over the Greyhounds (15-23, 8-16 Landmark) on Sunday afternoon at Volpe Field in Scranton. Holgado gave up a run on five hits while walking one and fanning five over a season-best 6.0+ IP to notch his second victory of the season. Senior righties Johnny Flannigan and George Sengos each tossed scoreless innings in relief to help preserve the win. Sunday's victory marked the 100th career win for the Royals' senior class, who is the winningest class in program history. Scranton broke the game open with a five-run sixth as sophomore Aidan Casey knocked in a pair with a two-run single and a wild pitch, sac fly and error allowed three additional runs to score in the inning.

Utica University collected a crucial sweep over Elmira College, winning 13-6 in game one (7 Inn.) and 17-3 (7 Inn.) in game two to keep the team very alive in the playoff hunt. Jason Story reached the 100 career hits milestone to become just the 18th player in program history to do so. In the opener, Jacob Scalise turned in a career game going 2-for-2 with a career-high four RBIs, three runs scored, and a pair of walks. The Pioneers bats were explosive smacking 12 hits and scoring 17 runs in game two.

Vassar College closed the regular season at home on Sunday afternoon as the Brewers defeated Bard 7-2 at Prentiss Field. Vassar improves to 12-19 overall and 7-7 in Liberty League play while the Raptors finish the season at 6-26 on the season and 1-15 in conference action. Junior Birch Herring-Jackson led off with an infield single in the fifth and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Jensen Bergman. Lapekas and Silvera laced back-to-back doubles to score Herring-Jackson and Bergman to go ahead 5-2. The Brewers added on to its lead in the sixth as M. Lee led off with a triple to right center and was scored on a RBI single from Greenhawt followed by a safety squeeze by Bergman to score Greenhawt to make it 7-2. Sophomore Addison Lee earned the win as he tossed five innings, allowing seven hits, two runs, one walk and struck out five. First year Rohan Mishra and junior Luke Barrientos combined for four scoreless innings of relief as they combined for five strikeouts.

The College of Wooster completed a season sweep of John Carroll University, winning 10-7 on Sunday afternoon at Schweickert Field. Junior right-hander Thomas Gfell navigated Wooster (15-20) through a seventh-inning jam, then slammed the door shut on John Carroll (12-21) the rest of the way. Gfell was inserted with Wooster protecting a 9-7 lead with the tying run at the plate. The righty jammed a pair of Blue Streaks with pop ups on the infield to quiet the John Carroll threat. He went on to send John Carroll's batters back to the dugout in order in the eighth and ninth innings for his second collegiate save. Ryan Kramer continued to close in on having the 17th 60-RBI season in program history with three to up his team-leading total to 53. The designated hitter finished 3-for-4 with three runs.

After falling in game one, 12-9, Rochester bounced back to take game two against the RIT Tigers, 6-5, walking things off on Henry Jamieson's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to clinch the No. 2 seed and home field advantage in next weekend's Liberty League Crossover series. With the doubleheader split, Rochester moves to 17-15 (10-5 LL) on the year, while the Tigers now sit at 14-18 (8-7 LL). With game one tied at 8-8, the Yellowjackets scored to take the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning. With a chance to close things out, the Tigers scored four runs in the top of the ninth, retaking the lead against a trio of UR relievers. In the nightcap, Jackson Reed led off the bottom of the inning with a walk, and quickly moved to second on Luke Gregory's sacrifice bunt. With the game-winning run on second, the Tigers opted to intentionally walk Cruser to bring up Stezzi, who, down 0-2, drew a hit-by-pitch to load the bases for Jamieson. Jamieson, making his first at-bat of the game after coming into play first in the top of the ninth, ripped a hard-hit single just off the glove of the third baseman, bringing in Reed to score to give Rochester the 6-5 victory.

After scoring 80 runs over its previous three games, Maritime College opened a doubleheader at Farmingdale on Sunday by engaging in a pitchers' duel. The Privateers (24-12, 12-6 Skyline) dropped that contest by a 2-1 margin before having another offensive eruption in Game 2, a 17-6 win over the Rams (18-11, 11-5 Skyline) at Farmingdale Baseball Stadium. In Game 1, Frank Santeramo and Tyler Kregeloh both put up zeroes through the first three innings. Maritime then took the lead in the top of the fourth when Harry Leipold homered to left. With the tying run on second and one out in the top of the fifth, Farmingdale called upon Justin DiMartino to pinch-hit, and he delivered a two-run homer to left that gave the Rams the lead. The two home runs would prove to be the only scoring in the contest. Kregeloh (3-0) gave up just three hits while striking out two and walking one over six innings before being relieved by Tyler DiRocco, who recorded his second save of the season. Santeramo (1-3), meanwhile, tossed a six-inning complete game. Anthony Madigan, who went 1-for-3 in Game 1, followed with a single for his 64th hit of the season, a new program record. He allowed two runs on five hits while recording four strikeouts and issuing one walk. Maritime used a six-run second inning to take an early lead in Game two and poured it on to secure the split.

No. 3 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University defeated No. 17 nationally ranked Benedictine University in walk-off fashion by a score of 10-9 in a non-conference neutral site game at the Field of Dreams Complex hosted by NorthWood High School. In a game scheduled only a day ago, BW (30-6) fell early to Benedictine (25-9) as the Eagles piled on five runs in the first three innings. The Brown and Gold came back to take an 8-5 lead in the fourth and added an insurance run on the seventh but that did not stop Benedictine from tying things up in the final frame. The Yellow Jackets quickly loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth and only needed a base knock to earn their first walk-off win of the season. In the bottom of the ninth, sophomore infielder Jace Druschel played hero as he hit a pinch-hit walk-off single.

Senior center fielder AJ Guindon was 3-5 with three runs batted in to lead Wheaton (Mass.) over visiting Roger Williams University, 8-5, this afternoon at Sidell Stadium on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass. Wheaton collected 13 hits to mark their 13th contest with double-digits knocks. Sophomore starting pitcher Ben Oliveira turned in a quality start to earn the win and improve to 4-2 after giving up two runs on five hits and a walk to go with six strikeouts in seven innings of work. Junior reliever Jackson Walsh picked up his second save of the season getting both batters he faced, including a called third strike to end the game.

Marietta College wrapped up a four-game road swing with a 7-2 win over Ohio Wesleyan University Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers improve to 19-17 on the season, while Ohio Wesleyan falls to 18-16 overall. Jacob Rocky (4-1) had another stellar start on the mound. The junior, who was named Ohio Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week last week, scattered three hits and allowed just one unearned run over 5.0 innings for the win. He struck out three and did not walk a batter.

Alfred State came away with a split at La Roche, as they won game one 10-1, and fell in game two 4-1. Ryan Bailey pitched a complete seven inning game scattering one run over four hits with 13 strikeouts. Jack Curabba went 3-4 with four RBIs, while Caleb Walker went 2-4 with four RBIs with both hits going over the fence. In game two, The Red Hawks got their bats going late and held off the Pioneers offence to pick up the win.

Transylvania defeated Webster University on the road this afternoon, 12-3 to extend the program's longest winning streak in over 2 decades to 12 games. After being down 1-0 after 4 innings, Transylvania scored all 12 of their runs in 4 of the next 5 innings to earn their first win over the Gorloks since 2019. Henry Craig became the first Pioneer pitcher this season to earn his 6th win on the mound. He pitched 5.1 innings, striking out 6 batters while allowing only 2 runs. Drew Bowles and Matt Armstrong kept the Gorloks from putting together any comeback. Austin Taylor led the Pioneers at the plate with a 3-4 performance, which included a career high 7 RBI's, and was capped off with a grand slam in the top of the 9th inning to push an 8-3 lead to a 12-3 lead. Trent Youngblood (2-4), Henry Mitcham (2-3, 1 RBI) Calvin Schubert (2-3, 2 RBI's), and Bryce Dreher (2-4, 2 RBI's) provided all 11 Transy hits and 12 runs.

Kalamazoo College finished the weekend series with a 17-7 single road game win at Olivet on Sunday. The Hornets' record improves to 25-9 (13-5 MIAA) on the season, and the Comets' record drops to 9-26 (3-15 MIAA). Kalamazoo and Alma are tied atop the MIAA standings heading into the final series when the Hornets face the Scots on May 3-4. Olivet was the first to score in all three games of the series. the turning point for the Hornets was a big inning in the fifth where they sent nine batters to the plate and scoring four runs. Kalamazoo kept its foot on the pedal with four more runs in the eighth to extend the lead to 12-3. The Comets put four runs on the board in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single, a sacrifice fly, and a two-run home run, and the scoreboard read 17-7 after the final out.
