St. Thomas and Wheaton (Mass.) played for a spot in the Divison III World Series Championship game on Monday. Cortland State eliminated Whitworth while Marietta knocked Webster out.

The No. 1, No. 2, No. 4 and No. 8 teams in the country remain to play for the title, which will now wrap up on Wednesday instead of Tuesday.

In the opener Cortland took the early lead with two first-inning runs over Whitworth. The Pirates took the lead in the third with three but two runs in the Cortland sixth put the Red Dragons back into the lead 4-3. Each team scored a single run in the late innings as Cortland advanced with a 5-4 win over Whitworth.

The second elimination game went the way of the Pioneers.  Marietta drew first blood with two runs in the initial frame. Webster broke out in the fourth with seven runs for a 7-2 lead but saw it melt away when Marietta responded with six runs of their own. Marietta added four more runs for the 12-7 win.

The winners bracket game was expected to be a classic pitcher's duel with 2010 All-American Nolan Corr on the mound for Wheaton (Mass.) and 2012 All-American Bryce Gapinski starting for St. Thomas. Both starters were out early as the offenses put up early runs. Wheaton prevailed 13-9 to guarentee a spot in the championship game.

The St. Thomas/Wheaton game was delayed 20 minutes due to lightning. With the baseball game on hold, the Tommies spent the delay on another game.  Here is what they did.
