GRAND CHUTE, Wis. -- Jake Glauser drew a walk and scored on a Forrest Chadwick single the tenth inning to give Southern Maine a 2-1 win over Millsaps in the opening game of the 2013 NCAA D-III College World Series.

On the first day of the D-III College World Series, pitching is usually dominant and the tournament opener was no different. Millsaps' Will Edwards and Southern Maine's Shyler Scates and Andrew Richards kept the opposing offense at bay throughout the day.

Edwards took the loss, allowing two runs on five hits. He struck out seven and walked none. Scates was just as effective with one run on for four hits and four strikeouts. Scates hit a batter and walked none. Richards allowed four runs in five innings of scoreless relief to earn the win.

"Edwards ran through our order real fast," said Southern Maine head coach Ed Flaherty. "We got a great break on the bunt. You got to give that kid credit."

"90% of the time Edwards will give you this type of performance," said Millsaps head coach Jim Page. "The way he battles, he is the ultimate competitor.

Millsaps struck first in the third inning. With two outs, Stephen Gates doubled down the left field line. Keith Schmaker followed with a clean single to center to score Gates.

Southern Maine tied it up in the sixth. First baseman John Carey singled to left and moved to second on a wild pitch. Nick Grady's single to right knotted the score 1-1.

The score remained tied until the tenth inning. Pinch hitter Glauser walked and was sacrificed to second. Gates fielded the bunt and attempted to throw to second but hit Edwards in the head with the throw, allowing both runners to reach base safely.

"My mind set was to get a hit," said Glauser. "I was able to keep a good eye and was able to get on base and help our team."

Edwards was replaced with Harper Grier who intentionally walked D3baseball.com Player of the Year Tucker White after a second sacrifice put runners on second and third with one out.  Chadwick delivered the winning run with a single to right field.

"I was looking for a pitch to hit," said Chadwich. "I was looking for something up and when he left it up, I hit it."

Southern Maine moves into the winners bracket and will play the winner of Linfield. Millsaps plays Ithaca in an elimination game.
