CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – For the first time in program history, the Loras College Duhawks won the American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) AQ Baseball Tournament title. The No. 3 Duhawks defeated the No. 5 University of Dubuque Spartans 12-7 in the championship game.

The victory also gives Loras the A-R-C automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament with next weekend’s regional site being announced Monday, May 15 at 11:00a.

The final day of the American Rivers Conference tournament began with Dubuque knocking out No. 1-seed and A-R-C Regular Season Champions, Buena Vista Beavers, out of the tournament, by a score of 4-2. In the opening game of the day, there was approximately a three hour rain delay that halted play. The schedule was adjusted to avoid weather conditions, but was altered again with weather moving in quicker than predicted, so the championship game began at 3:55p on Saturday afternoon. Loras’ Head Coach Carl Tebon guided his team to their first conference title for the Duhawks after going undefeated on the weekend winning games over No. 6-seed Wartburg (15-5, 8 inn.), No. 2-seed Luther (13-3), and No. 1-seed Buena Vista (9-6) en route to the title.

Although they have never won an AQ Tournament title, the Duhawks have won two regular season titles, with the most recent being in 2009.

Loras receives the American Rivers Conference’s automatic bid to the 2023 NCAA Division III Tournament and will hear their name called Monday during the selection show for the first time in program history. The regional round takes place May 18-21 followed by the 16-team super regional round the following weekend. Eight teams will emerge from the super regional round to line up at GP Cares Field at Veterans Memorial stadium for the NCAA Division III Baseball Championships June 2-8. The American Rivers Conference and the Cedar Rapids Kernels (High A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins) will host the Division III Championships for the final year in 2023.
