Late in the day it was Mitchell who celbrated on their home field with a 6-5 win over Tufts. Junior shortstop Angel Galindez paced the Mariners at the plate, finishing with two hits and three RBI, including a two-run single with two outs in the top of the eighth inning which tied the game at 5-5. Top seeded Cortland, Wheaton (Mass.) and Johns Hopkins won early games but it was the fourth seeds that flexed their muscles early. Bridgewater State, Lewis & Clark Susquehanna and TCNJ all defeated their top seeded opponents in the opening round of the NCAA D-III baseball playoffs.

Regional host Bridgewater State opened its regional with an upset victory on Friday. The fourth-seeded Bears, behind the complete-game pitching of Matt Josselyn, sent top-seeded and nationally ranked Endicott to the loser's bracket. Josselyn, a graduate student, scattered seven hits and improved to 9-2 as Bridgewater State handed the Gulls a 4-2 setback at Alumni Park. It was the first NCAA tournament win for Bridgewater State since 2011 when it defeated Wheaton College, 6-3, in Harwich, Massachusetts.

Susquehanna began their weekend in fine fashion, winning the opening game of their NCAA Regional round against hosts and number one seed Arcadia. Unleashing an onslaught of offense, the River Hawks compiled 16 hits with seven going for extra bases enroute to a 14-9 win. Tied after eight, both teams would miss their first chance to find the game-winner in the ninth. Susquehanna would have no problems finding offense in extra innings, with the River Hawks reclaiming the lead in the top of the 10th through a five-run, three-hit inning. Arcadia would get two runners on thanks to back-to-back walks to start the inning, but Landon Ness would enter to get the final two outs, stifling the threat and clinching the result. The River Hawks will face Rowan. In game two of the regional, Zach Grace scattered six hits and Jason Morgan went 3-for-5 with three RBI to help Rowan to a 12-3 win over Brockport.

TCNJ trailed 4-3 at Shenandoah after three innings, but the Lions put up crooked numbers in three of the next four innings and cruised to a 22-9 win against the host Hornets. Jack Felipe had just one hit, but it was a grand slam that really put the game away in the fifth, taking an 11-5 lead and putting it out of reach. Mike LaGravenis had four hits and scored four runs from the top spot in the TCNJ order as the Lions improved to 24-22 on the season. It was Shenandoah's eighth loss in 46 games.

Brett Pierson and Brayden Nomura limited Birmingham-Southern to just four singles and Lewis & Clark College hit four home runs to earn a 7-1 win over the Panthers in the first game of the 2023 NCAA Division III Baseball Regional. Lewis & Clark jumped out to a 1-0 lead early and never trailed in winning the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament game. The win also marked the program's first win over a nationally-ranked team since April 13, 2008 and put this year's team in a tie for the program record for wins in a single-season with 31. Northwest Conference Player of the Year Jack Thomson had two of the biggest hits of the game. He finished 3-5 with two runs and four RBI and hit two of the team's four home runs. Top-ranked Johns Hopkins broke open a tight game with an eight-run third inning and the Blue Jays hit eight home runs in a 23-9 win over Penn State Altoona in the opening game at Babb Field. After the Lions scratched across single runs in the first and second innings to grab an early 2-1 lead, the Blue Jays exploded for eight two-out runs in the bottom of the third to turn the one-run deficit into a 9-2 lead that was never seriously threatened. Johns Hopkins tied the NCAA Division III Tournament record with eight home runs in the victory. This is the third time a team has hit eight home runs in an NCAA game.

It was the NEWMAC Player and Pitcher of the Year that led top-seeded Wheaton (Mass.) over fourth-seeded Husson, 11-1, today at Alumni Field on the campus of host Mitchell in New London, Conn. Senior Cavan Brady was 4-for-4 with a walk and three runs batted in and sophomore starting pitcher Ryan McCarroll allowed just a run and struck out eight in seven and a third innings.

For some games, nine innings were not enough to determine a winner. Along with Susquehanna's 10 inning win over host Arcadia, Johnston & Wales needed more than one extra inning to move into the winners bracket. Freshman Jack Obert drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the 11th to propel the Johnson & Wales to a thrilling 12-11 extra-innings win over Middlebury. Sophomore Trevor Juan collected five hits and four RBI – including one in the Wildcats three-run 11th inning – as JWU moved into the winner's bracket and will face Bridgewater State. Eight games were decided by a single run but the Lynchburg Hornets came up with the only walk-off win of the day. Hornet freshman Brandon Garcia got the walk-off hit against Lebanon Valley with a liner down the right field line, scoring Jackson Harding and lifting No. 6 Lynchburg over the Flying Dutchmen 2-1 in the 10th inning. Both teams scored a single run in the first and from there on it was an old-fashion pitchers' duel as Zack Potts, Lynchburg's program leader in wins, toed the slab facing off with Lebanon Valley's ace Tommy Moore, Jr. Both pitchers pitched through the eighth inning but neither starter pitched to a decision.

Marietta erupted for eight runs in the fifth inning and then held off a spirited Adrian comeback attempt in the NCAA Division III Regional Tournament. The Pioneers held on to beat Adrian 11-10 and advance into the winner's bracket. The Etta Express got rolling in the bottom of fifth inning sending 13 batters to the plate. The Pioneers would need every one of those runs as Adrian scored four runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth to get within a run, 11-10. Gabe Torres retired Adrian in order in the ninth to secure the win.

Case Western Reserve junior third baseman Zack Carinci and first-year second baseman Jasiah Harris each hit three-run home runs and junior southpaw Reece Marley allowed just two runs over six innings to lead the Spartans to a 16-2 win over Mary Washington. Harris drove in four runs during the game, finishing the contest two-for-six with four RBIs including the three-run home run, and extending his hitting streak to 16-straight games. Carinci stretched his program-record hitting streak to 32 games, going three-for-four with four RBIs and a three-run home run.

Nick Falter came on to get the final two outs of the game, getting Miles Souza to fly out to shallow center in the top of the ninth to finish Denison's 8-7 win against Beloit in a home regional at Denison. That came after an epic at-bat in which Evan Zenger fouled off about a half-dozen two-strike pitches before lining a single to left-center to extend the game and bring the tying run to second. Beloit had scored four in the sixth and two more in the seventh to take a 7-6 lead before J. Welsch tied it up with a solo shot in the bottom of the seventh and the Big Red scratched out the go-ahead run in the eighth when Owen Wilson got hit by a pitch, moved up on a wild pitch, went to third on a grounder and scored on Eric Colaco's infield single.
