Rain knocks out one, delays others

No. 4 ranked Endicott defeated Middlebury, 6-1, on Saturday morning. The Gulls pounced for three runs in the first inning and let the combo of Cannata and Gottesman lead them the rest of the way to the victory.

The first top seed fell in the morning hours of Saturday as Brockport eliminated Arcadia by a 6-2 score. Other top seeds fared better. Endicott will have another elimnation game with their win over Middlebury and will play the loser of the winners brcket final. Host Shenandoah also advanced with a win over Immaculata, ending the Miighty Macs' season. The dreams of a second straight title is still alive for the Warriors as Eastern Connecticut staved off eliimination. The final game of the day was pushed to Sunday with Cortland taking on Eastern Connecticut in the final elimination game of the Cortland Regional.

The Mitchell Regional has been washed out for Saturday, while the Ohio regionals at Denison and Marietta are delayed by rains crossing the country. Tufts and Husson will get another day in their seasons with the elimination game pushed to Sunday.

Matt Malcom drove in Noah Plantamuro with the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth to give nationally ranked Eastern Connecticut a 5-4 walk-off victory over St. Joseph’s (L.I.) in an elimination game at the Division III baseball NCAA Tournament’s Cortland Regional Saturday morning. The game remained tied heading to the bottom of the ninth, where Plantamuro reached on a one-out error and then advanced to third when the Golden Eagles were unable to turn an inning-ending double play. He then scored on Malcom’s single to shortstop to keep the defending national champions season going. Following that game, Ithaca defeated archrival Cortland and advances to Sunday where it will play for the championship in the Cortland Regional. Colin Leyner threw a complete game for the Bombers, improving to 8-4, allowing nine hits and walking one. Ithaca awaits the survivor of Cortland and Eastern Connecticut. Over the final four innings, Colin Leyner allowed just two hits and did not issue a walk.

Keystone and Washington & Jefferson opened the day with a 29-minute first inning as the Giants opened a 3-2 lead after the opening frame. The Presidents clawied thenselves back into the game and grabbing the lead in the fourth inning after allowing three runs in the first and second innings. A six run six closed the door on thre Giants as W&J went on to win the elimination game 18-9.

St. John Fisher reached the elimination final with a come-from-behind win over Penn State Altoona. The Cardinals scored seven runs in the ninth inning in an elimination game with the Lions, winning 10-4. The big hit came off the bat of Brian Norsen whose grand slam broke a 4-4 tie. The Cardinals had to turn it around for a game with Randolph-Macon after their emotional win. Trailing by a run in the ninth, SJF went to work and sandwiched a single between walks. a single to right ended the game as SJF walked off into a date with Johns Hopkins. Johns Hopkins who advanced with a 10-3 win over the Yellow Jackets from Randolph-Macon.

Dallas Hite walked it off for Penn State-Harrisburg with a 2-run shot, upending Salisbury 12-11 and tying the best-of-five series at one game apiece. This win will push the final game of the series into Sunday. Hunter Merritt came up big for PSH (34-11), getting the final five outs and picking up his sixth win of the season. The Lions will need to win twice on Sunday as Salisbury won game three 15-5 to be one victory from advancing to the super-regional round. Benji Thalheimer came up with a key win to move Salisbury a win away from another week for their season. In Salisbury's win, Cameron Hyder scored his 200th run of his career.

It will be Tigers vs Tigers in the regional on the campus of East Texas Baptist. ETBU defeated Trinity (Texas), 9-4, on Saturday. Trinity edged Cal Lutheran, 11-2, in the elimination game that followed. ETBU would fall behind 2-0 in the second inning but grab the lead for good with a three-run fifth and sixth inning. The host Tigers led by as many as five (7-2), but Trinity reduced the deficit with a pair of runs in the eighth. ETBU got those runs back to cap the five-run win and extend its streak to seven games.

Alec McGinnis went 4-for-4 as Augustana ran out to a 5-1 lead and held on to win 5-4 in an elimination game against Loras at the UW-Stevens Point regional. McGinnis doubled and scored as part of a three-run sixth inning. With six outs to go in their season, the Duhawks rallied, as Max McCallum homered to right and Max Cullen singled and drove in two in the eighth to cut the lead to 5-4 with runners on second and third. But Addison Southwick came on in relief and got the final two outs of the inning. In the ninth, McCallum drew a leadoff walk before Southwick retired the side.

No. 3 Shenandoah eliminated Immaculata from the Winchester Regional with an 11-7 victory. Shenandoah (39-18) jumped out to a 10-0 lead over the Mighty Macs (29-20) before Immaculata roared back with a seven-run eighth. Leading 10-6 with runners on the corners and one out, Hornets skipper Kevin Anderson turned to senior reliever Kyle Lisa to snuff out the IU threat. Lisa struck out the first hitter he faced, and after Immaculata scored a run on a double steal, got another strike out to end the frame. In the ninth, he worked around a two-on, one-out jam with a 1-6-3 double play.

Delayed but not out is Adrian. The fourth seeded Bulldogs managed to stay alive in the Regional with a 5-1 win over No. 2 Mary Washington behind a complete game on the mound from Gage Ricker. Ricker was the star of the game where he threw nine complete innings where he allowed one run on seven hits with five strikeouts. Ricker moved to 3-0 on the season after throwing just 88 pitches in the complete game. It was a stressful ninth as Case Western loaded the bases with one run in and Adrian holding a one run lead. A groundout ended the Case Western Treat and Adrian College made its way back to the NCAA Regional Championship game where they will see a rematch with Marietta College. The Bulldogs defeated Case Western Reserve 9-8 on Saturday night to make their way through the consolation bracket. 

Marietta will play for the NCAA Division III Regional championship for the third straight season after posting an 8-3 win over Case Western Reserve at Don and Sue Schaly Field. "We expect that type of performance out of Gino. He's a fifth-year guy and he has had some really shiny, bright moments in this program," Marietta head coach Brian Brewer said. "He has struggled a little bit this season, so it's rewarding to see him have success. He deserves it." Case Western jumped on Pioneer starter Zach Marzetz right out of the gates. Gino Sabatine took over for Marzetz and had his best outing of the season tossing 5.2 innings for the win. Sabatine (3-2) allowed one run on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Jared Bees gave up one hit over the final 2.0 innings.

Baldwin Wallace scored eight runs in the final two innings to down top-seeded Denison university by a final score of 10-6 on the Big Red Baseball Field. They will rematch with Denison who shutout Spalding 7-0 in a game pushed late in the evening by rain in the area. Spalding earned their spot with a 3.5 hour extra inning affair with Beloit. Spalding never trailed in the first game of the day in the regional, but it took 12 innings to overcome a determined Beloit team. Jacob Spanyer singled to right field to drive in Ethan Tuttle, who had just doubled to open the twelvth inning. Beloit did not quit, getting the tying run to scoring position with one out but was not able to find another clutch hit to extend the game.

20-1 win over Webster (32-15). Comer later hit a grand
slam and tied the program single-game record with eight
RBI. Comer had four hits on the day coming up a triple shy
of a cycle. He scored four runs on the day.

Jason O'Neill threw a complete-game shutout and Ryan Murphy drove in five runs as #23 Rowan remained unbeaten at the NCAA Ambler Regional, defeating Susquehanna, 20-0, in a game played in a steady rain at Arcadia's Skip Wilson Field. Rowan will face the winner of the SUNY Brockport-Susquehanna game, with the Profs only needing one win to advance to the Super Regional. O'Neill held Susquehanna to nine hits, while not allowing any walks and striking out six for his second complete game. The righthander improved to 8-1 on the year. Murphy went 4-for-6 with four runs and five RBI, and was just one double short of hitting for the cycle. Tyler Cannon was also 4-for-6 with two runs and two RBI, with Anthony Schooley going 3-for-5 and scoring four runs.

Salve Regina advanced into the Regional championship with a 1104 win over Misericordia. To advance to the super-regional round, they will need to win once on Sunday. They will face a familiar for as Misericordia emerged out of the elimination round. Misericordia advanced to the winner's bracket with a 10-7 win over Washington & Jefferson. Jason Sanfilippo had three hits and two RBI and Derrick Vosburg hit a long two-run homer. Jack Regenye had three hits and Brock Bollinger had two hits and scored twice. Tyler Leonard worked 3.1 innings of relief to earn the win and Connor Maryniak struck out two in the ninth to pick up his first save.

UW-La Crosse advanced to the championship game of their Division III Regional with a 10-5 win over Bethel (Minn.) Saturday afternoon at Copeland Park. UWL's 33 wins rank fourth in single-season school history. The Eagles won a school record 39 games in 2016. UWL won 36 games in 2015 and 34 in 2012. Bethel will get another shot at the Eagles after the held off a charging Buena Vista team to come out of the elimination round with a 9-6 win.

La Verne rolled Lewis & Clark 19-4 in the winner's bracket contest on the field of Birmingham-Southern. The Pioneers pitchers struggled to slow down a La Verne lineup that scored five runs in their final two at-bats on Friday against Franklin College. The Leopards racked up 15 hits (12 singles, two doubles and a home run) and added 11 walks and two hit by pitches. La Verne ace Gerald Terry earned the win after going seven innings and allowing just three hits and one earned run. The graduate student struck out nine and walked four to improve to 11-4 on the season.

Lynchburg will play for its second championship in a week after defeating N.C. Wesleyan 16-9 Saturday. The Hornets walked 13 times, got 11 hits, and Gavin Collins and Eric Hiett hit back-to-back home runs in the win. Brandon Pond started on the hill and earned his fourth win of the season. He allowed a solo home run in the 1st but settled in just like he did after giving up a solo shot in the ODAC tournament against Shenandoah. He struck out three hitters over the next two innings as the Hornets put runs on the board. Eric Hiett hit his first-career homer in the 9th. Hiett was 4-5 in the game and has 12 hits during Lynchburg's postseason run.
