GREENSBORO, N.C. – Kyle Newcomb's two-run homer in the seventh inning broke a 7-7 tie and lifted visiting Averett University to a 10-7 baseball win at Guilford College Sunday.

The Cougars (1-5) jumped out to a 7-0 lead thanks to four walks and four hit batsmen by Guilford (1-5) pitchers. The first three Averett batters in the sixth inning were hit by a pitch, which loaded the bases. Newcomb had an RBI single and James Carter delivered a two-run double in the Cougars' four-run inning.

Averett starter Cody Moore tired in the sixth inning as the Quakers batted around and hung seven runs on the scoreboard. Guilford's Jay Cox hit a two-run double in the sixth and Derek Hardison tied the game with a two-out, two-run single.

Tyler Long (1-0) relieved Moore and once he worked out of the seventh, the left-hander settled down to hold Guilford scoreless over the final three innings.

Averett's Kyle Newcomb was 2-5 with two RBI. Teammate Adam Higgins went 2-3 with a homer, two RBI and three runs scored out of the leadoff spot.

Guilford's Will Cornelius and Casey Mann both had three hits and an RBI.

Guilford hosts crosstown-rival Greensbro College Wednesday (2/16) at 2:30 p.m.
