WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - A lot of people travel to Florida and don't want to leave the warm weather behind. If the Edgewood College baseball team continues to win games, they might apply for permanent residence in the Sunshine State. The Eagles won their third and fourth straight games on Monday with 6-4 and 5-2 victories over Greenville College (Ill.).

Edgewood College (4-1) scored single runs in each of the first three innings in game one. Andrew King and Treye Dennison drove in runs with RBI singles in the first and second innings, respectively. In the third, King doubled and moved to third on a passed ball where he scored on a Kyle Fischer sacrifice fly.

Eagle starter Kyle Smith cruised through the first three innings, allowing three hits and striking out one, before an error opened up trouble for the Eagles in the fourth. The error put Greenville runners on first and second with two outs, before Adam Wallace and Ben Brown smacked back-to-back doubles to tie the game at 3-3.

The game remained tied until the sixth inning when the Eagles took the lead for good on a bases loaded double play ground ball by Scott Ortega. In the seventh, the Eagles picked up two insurance runs on RBI singles from Alex Jaskulski and Fischer.

Five Eagle pitchers threw in the game, but it was James Bertakis who earned the win after facing just one batter. Bertakis entered in the fifth inning and induced a double play ground ball. He was still the pitcher of record when the Eagles took the lead in top of the sixth inning. Connor Lenz gave up the Eagles' only earned run of the game, but still recorded his third save in three games. King went 2-for-2 with a double to lead the Eagle hitting attack. Fischer had a hit and two runs batted in.

Jake Zadra got the second game started with an RBI groundout in the first, but Greenville College (0-5) bounced right back with two runs in the top of the second. The Eagles evened the game in the third inning when Zadra executed a squeeze bunt with runners on first and third to score Brandon Bartels.

Edgewood College broke the game open in the fifth inning. Ryan O'Dell hit his first career home run to lead off the frame and give the Eagles a 3-2 lead. After two outs, Jaskulski and Zadra walked, allowing Mike Selvaggi to drive them home with a two-run double.

Freshman pitcher Trevor Koehn threw six solid innings for the Eagles allowing just two runs on five hits and striking out seven Panthers, to earn his first collegiate victory. Brock McGinn notched his first career save by pitching the seventh inning. The Eagles had just four hits for the game but generated five runs. Selvaggi and Zadra had two runs batted in apiece.

The Eagles will take Tuesday off and play an exhibition game against a Minnesota Twins minor league team on Wednesday in Fort Myers, Florida. Edgewood College's next varsity game will be a single contest with St. Norbert College on Thursday.
