ASHLAND, Va. - No. 1/1 Shenandoah University downed Randolph-Macon 3-1 Friday afternoon in its final tuneup before taking on No. 2 Christopher Newport University this weekend.

Shenandoah (21-1) got all of its offense in its first two at-bats against Macon (13-13).

Senior All-America Kevin Brashears led off with a walk, and after advancing to second on an error and third when Greg Van Sickler hit into a double play, scored on a Cory Nelson single to center.

Brashears' classmate, Clint DeHaven, scored what proved to be the game-winning run one batter later when he trotted home on a passed ball.

Brashears, who finished the day 3 for 4, drove in the Hornets final run with a second inning single. This hit drove in catcher Keaton Neeb, who led off the SU second with a single through the left side.

The offense proved more than enough for starterBrian Goddard (3-0), who scattered one run on six hits and one walk in 7 2/3. 

Goddard also struck out 10.

Junior Kyle Scallion retired the final four Yellow Jackets to post his third save of the spring.

Shenandoah banged out 12 hits in the win, including three from both Brashears and Nelson. Mike Smith and Joey Donofrio both added two hits.

Kyle Hicks (2-1) took the loss after giving up three runs (two earned) on nine hits and two walks in 6.0 innings.
