ALPINE, TX - After dropping the first game on a walk-off home run, 6-5, the Mississippi College baseball team took out their frustrations on Sul Ross State with a 36-9 victory in the second game of the doubleheader at Kokernot Field.

For the Choctaws (6-7), it was their most runs scored since moving to Division III in 1997.  The 36 runs finished just two shy of an American Southwest Conference record set by Concordia Texas on February 24, 2007 against East Texas Baptist.

MC scored their 36 runs with 28 hits and 12 errors by the Lobos.  Senior Spencer Brunson led the MC attack, tallying a team-high four hits, five runs scored, and four RBI.

The Choctaws had only hit two home runs on the season (both from Brunson), but sophomore Zach Evans, senior Daniel Wass, and senior Rob Thames each went deep in the nightcap.

Four different Choctaws finished with at least three hits, including junior Blaine Posey, who came off the bench to go 3-4 with with three runs scored and two RBI.

Six Choctaws pitchers combined for the victory, with junior Ryan Glover being credited with the win after tossing 4.0 innings and striking out five batters.  Freshman Andy Roberts and sophomore Bucky Shipp each made their debut on the mound for MC with Shipp striking out two and allowing just one hit in his inning.

Mike Apodaca led Sul Ross, going 3-3 with two RBI and a run scored.  No other Lobo had multiple hits in the offensive slugfest.

The MC offense was able to get to each pitcher the Lobos put on the mound, scoring at least eight runs off of four different hurlers.

In the first game of the doubleheader, Sul Ross got the best of the Choctaws as Apodaca hit a two-out, two-run home run to collect the walk-off win, 6-5.

After Sul Ross opened the scoring with runs in the third and fourth innings, the Choctaws grabbed a lead with four runs in the fifth off of RBI hits from senior Jeremy Simmons, senior Mike Kerdock, and senior Rob Thames.  Senior Chad Wooten drew a bases loaded walk that scored Brunson to finish the scoring.

The two teams traded runs in the sixth innings to send the game to the seventh with MC ahead, 5-4.  The Choctaws could not add any insurance in their half, setting up the walk-off for the Lobos.

After a single and sacrifice bunt to put the game-tying run on second base with one out, the Choctaws got Chris Rubio to flyout to right field and move the runner to third with two outs.  Apodaca came to the plate and added to his career day with the game-winner.  Apodaca went 6-7 with four RBI and three runs scored over the two games.

The two teams will be back at it tomorrow with a single game starting at 12:00 p.m. at Kokernot Field.
