WAYNE, N.J. (March 7, 2012) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team fell to 4-2 on the season after dropping an 11-5 decision to the hosts from William Paterson University at Jeff Albies Field on March 7. The Ducks led, 2-0, after the top of the fourth inning but Paterson rolled off 11 runs over the next five innings to claim the victory.

Freshman infielder Marc Calleo (Bayville, N.Y.) led the Ducks at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a triple, a run scored and a run batted in. Fellow freshman Gregg Nickels (Simpsonville, S.C.) pinch hit for Calleo and stroked a double, scored and drove in a run in one at bat.

Graduate student first baseman Matt Glassman (Basking Ridge, N.J.) went 2-for-5 at the dish with an RBI and 13 putouts defensively, while sophomore outfielder Shane Raymond (Easton, Pa.) drove in two runs despite going 0-for-3 at the plate. Raymond recorded a sacrifice hit to his credit in the loss.

Five other Ducks picked up one hit in the contest, two of which were in pinch hit appearances. Freshmen catcher Matt O'Brien (Goffstown, N.H.) and first baseman Pete Prontnicki (Edison, N.J.) both went 1-for-1 and scored in their only at bat.

O'Brien pinch hit for sophomore catcher Curt Lowenstein (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) who scored once and stole a base in a 0-for-1 game.

Senior infielder Tom Phillips (Spring Lake, N.J.) swiped his team-leading sixth bag of the season as part of a 1-for-5 afternoon.

Six Ducks toed up the rubber in the loss with junior Mark Poinsett (Ocean Gate, N.J.) earning the start. Poinsett tossed 4.1 innings and scattered four hits and allowed three runs (two earned) before giving way to senior Vincent Vinci (Howell, N.J.). Vinci lasted 1.2 innings and surrendered three earned runs on four hits with one strikeout.

Senior John Martelle (Colonia, N.J.) relieved Vinci in the seventh inning and gave up a hit and an unearned run in one-third of an inning. Senior Chris Tucci (Calverton, N.Y.) retired the only batter he faced in the seventh before freshman John Howarth (Fanwood, N.J.) tossed the final out but gave up three runs on three hits with a strikeout.

Freshman Casey Conroy (High Bridge, N.J.) threw the eighth inning for Stevens and allowed one run on two hits.

Stevens will be back in action on Saturday, March 10, for a doubleheader against John Jay College. Game 1 is slated to begin at 2:30 p.m. with the nightcap starting 30 minutes later. After Saturday's double dip, the Ducks will fly down to Florida for four-games between March 12 and 15.
