Baseball Drops First Game of Florida Trip to FDU-Florham

AUBURNDALE, Fla. (March 12, 2012) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's baseball team lost its first game of the four-game Florida trip to Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham, 15-4, in seven inning at Lake Myrtle Park Sports Complex in Auburndale on March 12. The Ducks spotted FDU six runs after the first two innings and could not fight their way back into the ballgame. Stevens is now 6-3 this season.

At the plate for Stevens, sophomore outfielder Dan Allen (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) led the way at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a homerun, a double, two runs batted in and a run scored. Allen cracked a two-run homer in the top of the fifth with graduate student infielder Matt Glassman (Basking Ridge, N.J.) on base after a single.

Glassman, junior infielder Michael Donovan (Mendham, N.J.) and freshman outfielder Brian Hennelly (Holbrook, N.Y.) all recorded two hits in the game. Glassman batted 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a walk, Donovan stroked a double as part of a 2-for-3 morning and Hennelly recorded two singles in four at bats.

Senior designated hitter TJ Alcorn (Turnersville, N.J.) drove in a run on a sacrifice fly and walked, while sophomore catcher Curt Lowenstein (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) stole a base.

Junior Mark Poinsett (Ocean Gate, N.J.) got the start for the Ducks and went two innings to suffer the loss. Poinsett allowed nine hits and six earned runs before giving way to freshman Daniel Frischman (Short Hills, N.J.). Frischman pitched 2.2 innings of relief and surrendered six hits and three unearned runs while striking out three batters.

After Frischman, senior John Martelle (Colonia, N.J.) tossed one-third of an inning and gave up a hit. Freshman Casey Conroy (High Bridge, N.J.) entered the game in the sixth inning and allowed four runs on four hits in an inning of work. Graduate student Jeffrey Hart (Greenwood Lake, N.Y.) did not record an out in the seventh but gave up one hit that ended the game due to the 10-run rule.

The Ducks are back in action tomorrow afternoon against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at 4:30 p.m. on the same field as today at Lake Myrtle Sports Complex.
