#22 Cortland Defeats Staten Island, 6-4

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Senior Aaron Schuldt (Liverpool) struck out nine batters and did not allow any walks or earned runs in seven innings and junior Brian Barry (Smithtown/Smithtown East) finished 3-for-3 with a triple, double and two RBI as nationally 22nd-ranked Cortland (8-4) defeated The College of Staten Island, 6-4, in a non-league matchup.

Schuldt, now 3-0 on the season, gave up eight hits. Cortland pitchers combined to strike out 13 batters as senior Brendan Hourihan (Yorktown Heights/Lakeland) fanned two batters in an inning and a third and senior Tom Nagy (Greenville/Minisink Valley) struck out two hitters in the ninth.

Sophomore Chris Jackson (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham) went 2-for-4 with a solo homer and two runs scored and junior Zack Graczyk (Carmel) was 2-for-4.

Richard Anderson took the loss for Staten Island (6-6) after allowing 11 hits and six runs, five earned, in nine innings. He struck out six and did not walk a batter. Christian Osmundsen led the offense with a 2-for-4 effort and Luis Ortiz went 2-for-5.

Cortland took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth on one-out singles by junior John Adornetto (Commack) and sophomore Max Rosing (Rockville Centre/South Side), a fielder's choice and a two-out, two-run Barry double. CSI plated three unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth to go up 3-2. Ortiz reached on an error to start the inning. With two outs, George Kantzian and Francis Torres hit back-to-back doubles and Sal Taormina added an RBI single.

The Red Dragons knotted the game in the fifth when sophomore Tim Panetta (Mount Kisco/Fox Lane) reached on an infield single, moved to third on a pair of groundouts and scored on an error. Cortland grabbed the lead for good in the seventh when Barry tripled with one out and scored on a Panetta sacrifice fly to center.

In the eighth, junior Michael LaTempa (LaGrangeville/Arlington) led off with a triple and senior Matt June (Colonie) hit a sacrifice fly to left to give Cortland a 5-3 lead. Jackson hit his solo homer with one out in the ninth to give the Red Dragons a three-run lead.

Hourihan retired the side in order in the eighth and got the first batter to ground out in ninth. After Nagy entered, Ramces Tibvrcio doubled and scored on a Ray Gise pinch-hit RBI single. Nagy, however, struck out the last two batters to end the game.

Cortland will play a doubleheader Saturday at Purchase College starting at noon.
