Orange, Calif. (3/20/12) – Southpaw Ryan Zamorsky picked up his third win of the season as the Kean University baseball team pushed past Chapman University, 9-4, Tuesday evening.
The coast-to-coast rivalry started in 2004 with the teams now meeting 16 times.
#3 Kean now improves to 11-4 this season, while Chapman falls to 9-12.
The Cougars jumped on the board quickly as senior D.J. Breckenridge led off the game with a single. Senior Vinny Galya brought him home with an RBI double for a quick 1-0 lead. Two Panther miscues extended the inning and senior Dylan Laguna took advantage with a two out, two RBI single.
Chapman got back into the game as they scored three in their half of the second. With one out, the Panthers took advantage of two Kean miscues, bringing a run home and putting runners on the corners. Sophomore Charlie James made it 3-2 with an RBI single to center. With the bases loaded and one out on the board, junior James Parr lofted a single into left field, scoring Connor Battaglia to knot the score at three-all. Sophomore Shane Alvarez then gunned down James at the plate trying to score from second for the second out of the inning. During the same play, an errant throw landed the ball right back in Alvarez's possession and he in turn fired a shot home to now throw out Nick Portillo at the plate, who started off the at-bat at first.
Kean broke the tie in their next at-bat as sophomore Joe O'Connor drew a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch. Junior Nick Ramagli recorded an RBI groundout later in the frame, for a 5-3 advantage.
The Panthers got one right back in the bottom of the third as sophomore Mark Saatazer lined a one-out triple into the gap. He would come around and score on a double from senior Charlie Piro.
That would be the last of the scoring for Chapman as Zamorsky held Chapman in check in eight innings of work. In total he allowed four runs, one earned, and nine hits. He fanned seven and walked four as he improved to 3-0. Sophomore Matt Mantione tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to seal the win.
Offensively senior Steve Sanguiliano was 3-for-5 with four runs scored and two RBI while senior Eddie Jennings was 3-for-5 with two RBI, one run scored and a double.
Kean returns to action on Wednesday when they travel to California Lutheran University for a 3 p.m. matchup (local time).
