Winter Haven, Fla. – Senior Brian Szabo (Hermitage, Pa.) and sophomore Derek McIlvane (Washington, Pa.) came up with clutch hits to lead the Washington and Jefferson Presidents to a 9-8 and 8-7 doubleheader sweep of the Trinity College Bantams in baseball action this afternoon at Lake Myrtle Park. Trinity drops to 7-5 on the year, while Washington and Jefferson improves to 8-1.

In the sixth inning of Game 2, Szabo delivered a pinch hit bases clearing double down the left field line to give the Presidents a 7-5 lead. Trinity had just taken their first lead of the game, a 5-4 advantage, in the top half of the inning, when senior tri-captain James Ramsey (Belmont, Mass.) came up with yet another big hit for the Bantams, knocking in two runs.

In the top of the seventh, back-to-back singles by first-year Kyle Decker (Simsbury, Conn.) and junior Alex Almeida (Bridgeport, Conn.) set up junior Stephen Rogers (Watertown, Mass.) for an RBI single, and first-year Bryan Wolfe (La Habra Heights, Calif.) for a game-tying RBI sacrifice fly. After trading clutch hits throughout the final innings, it was the Presidents to strike last, as sophomore Kyle McLain (East Amherst, N.Y.) knocked home classmate Josh Staniscia (Export, Pa.) for the game-winning score, which sent their teammates flocking to the field in celebratory approval.

It was the second tough loss of the day for Trinity, which saw a 5-1 lead in the opening game against the Presidents slowly turn to a 9-8 loss. In the game, Washington and Jefferson tallied three crucial runs in the top of the sixth, courtesy of a two-RBI single by Staniscia and an RBI single for McLain. Trinity answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 9-7, when Wolfe opened the inning with a double, senior tri-captain Kevin Mortimer (Spencer, Mass.) walked, and senior Luke Auger (Avon, Conn.) plated two with an RBI double. In the bottom of the seventh, Wolfe plated Decker with a two-out single to cut the President's lead to 9-8, but the Bantams ran out of chances, as first-year Tyler Dean (Valencia, Pa.) induced a game-ending pop out, to earn the save.
