Cortland Shuts Out Brockport Twice, 10-0 and 13-0

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Junior Mike Hughes (Albany) tossed a two-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts in the seven-inning opener and junior Ray Angelucci (Commack) allowed two hits and fanned five batters in seven innings during the nine-inning second game as nationally-ranked Cortland blanked host Brockport twice, 10-0 and 13-0, in SUNYAC contests.

The Red Dragons, ranked 16th nationally by D3baseball.com and eighth by the American Baseball Coaches Association, improved to 13-5 overall and 2-1 in the conference with the wins. Brockport is now 12-7 and 1-2.

GAME 1: Cortland 10, Brockport 0

Hughes improved to 3-1 on the season with his two-hit performance. He allowed only three baserunners over the seven innings. Jake Coleman singled with one out in the second. Mike Gianni reached on a passed ball after a strikeout in the fifth and went to second on a Stephen Boronczyk single. Hughes struck out the next hitter to end the fifth and retired the side in order the last two innings, including three strikeouts in the seventh.

Junior Brian Barry (Smithtown/Smithtown East) and sophomore P.J. Rinaldi (Bethel, CT) each homered in Cortland's 13-hit attack. Barry hit a solo shot with one out in the top of the first and finished 2-for-2 with a walk and two RBI. Rinaldi hit a solo homer in the fifth and ended 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Sophomore Max Rosing (Rockville Centre/South Side) was 2-for-2 with a double and two runs scored and junior Bryan Mistretta (Commack) finished 2-for-3 with an RBI. Senior Matt June (Colonie) was 2-for-5 with a double, RBI and three runs scored, while juniors John Adornetto (Commack) and Zack Graczyk (Carmel) drove in two runs apiece.

Graczyk's RBI groundout in the third put Cortland ahead 2-0. The Red Dragons scored three in the fourth on a June RBI fielder's choice, a Barry sacrifice fly and an Adornetto RBI single. Rosing's homer started the scoring in a four-run fifth that also featured a Mistretta RBI single. Junior Mathew Wild's (Auburn) RBI groundout completed the scoring in the seventh.

Brockport's James Bardenett allowed eight hits and five runs in four innings and drops to 4-2 for the season.

GAME 2: Cortland 13, Brockport 0

Cortland broke open a 1-0 game after three innings by scoring a combined 12 runs between the fourth and eighth innings. The Red Dragons finished with eight hits but also reached on seven walks and two hit batsmen.

Angelucci and sophomore Adam Smith (Vestal) combined for the shutout. Angelucci retired the first seven Brockport hitters before giving up a one-out single to Boronczyk in the third. He also permitted a Kyle Tracy single with one out in the fourth and a two-out walk to Jeff Sergott in the fifth. Smith gave up singles to Nick Bunce and Boronczyk in the eighth but retired the final five batters, three by strikeout.

Rinaldi finished 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI and June was 2-for-3 with a walk, RBI and two runs. Rosing, Barry and Graczyk each drove in two runs and sophomore Jamie Butler (Vestal) hit a pinch-hit, two-run homer in the eighth for Cortland's final two runs.

Cortland scored in the first on a two-out error. Rinaldi's RBI double was the highlight of a two-run fourth, and the Red Dragons added four in the fifth on a Barry bases-loaded walk, a Rinaldi sacrifice fly and Graczyk's two-run double.

Cortland added two in the sixth when Rosing was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Barry followed with an RBI walk. Wild plated a run with a groundout and June hit a sacrifice fly to account for two runs in the seventh and Butler hit his homer after a two-out error in the eighth.

Brockport starter Mark Ciccotti allowed five hits and seven runs, five earned, in four and two-thirds innings. He struck out four and walked three.

Cortland will play a single, non-league game at SUNYIT Tuesday, March 27, at 4 p.m.
