WESTFIELD, Mass. – Kevin Greene was 3 for 4 with a triple, double and single to lead Westfield State University to a 7-5 victory over Springfield College in non-conference baseball action on Thursday, March 29.
 
Westfield (7-8), jumped out to an early 1-0 first-inning lead. Leadoff hitter Matt Kelly ripped a first-pitch single to leftfield and advanced to third on a standup double to the left-center gap by Greene. Freshman catcher Nick Champeau then delivered his first of two RBI with a sacrifice fly.
 
Springfield took its only lead, 2-1, with two unearned runs in the top of the second. A passed ball, two walks and a double steal of second and home, along with an RBI groundout by Shane O'Leary, gave the Pride their short-lived lead.
 
The Owls responded with two runs in the home half of the second to regain the lead. After two walks, Kelly lined a two-out RBI single over the shortstop's outstretched glove. Greene followed with an RBI single to leftfield.
 
Springfield tied the score in the fourth inning. Frank Calabrese led off with a single and advanced to third on Karl Quist's single through the right side. Calabrese scored when Matt Milano hit into a 6-3 double play.
 
Westfield took a 4-3 lead in the fifth, knocking Springfield starting pitcher Travis Lane out of the game. Greene led off with a triple to centerfield and scored on Champeau's single through the left side.
 
Westfield also scored single runs in its final three at bats, including an RBI double by Tim Heintz in the sixth and a bases-loaded walk to Alex Cloutier in the seventh. In the Owls' final at bat, Greene drew a leadoff walk, stole second and advanced to third on catcher throwing error. Josh Blair then plated Greene when he reached safely on an error to deep shortstop.
 
Springfield scored a run in the seventh on a bases-loaded walk and its final run in the ninth on Matt McGowan's booming RBI triple to straightaway centerfield.
 
Both team collected nine hits and there were 14 walks on the cold and blustery day, including eight free passes issued by Springfield pitchers.
 
Kelly was 2 for 5 as the Owls' No. 1 and No. 2 batters had five of their nine hits. Also belting a double was Andrew Medeiros.
 
Quist was 3 for 4 and leadoff hitter Steve Starr was 2 for 5.
 
Westfield starter Tommy Carroll was credited with the victory with a line of five innings pitched, four hits, three runs (1 earned), three walks and no strikeouts. Curt Everett threw the ninth to notch the save.
