NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport junior Greg Goldsmith tossed the fourth one-hitter in school history today,  shutting down Averett University (20-14, 5-6) for a complete game shutout, as CNU won, 6-0. Goldsmith gave up just one single and didn't allow a runner past second base in the game, striking out six for his fourth win of the year.

The third-ranked Captains improved to 21-4 overall, 7-2 in the USA South. Goldsmith joins Tab Pabst and Dwayne Ray as the only CNU pitchers in school history to throw complete game one-hitters. Eben Brower owns the only no-hitter, holding York (Pa.) empty on May 2, 2004.

CNU took the lead in the bottom of the second and never looked back. Senior Luke Saunders hit a foul fly ball to the third baseman, but it was dropped giving him new life. On the next pitch, Saunders blasted a towering home run to left field, putting CNU up, 1-0.

In the bottom of the third inning, Goldsmith gave up a lead off single to catcher James Fiorella for the lone Cougars hit of the game. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, but Goldsmith struck out Matt Mitchell and got a groundout from Jordan Kidd to end the inning.

The Captains tacked on three more runs in the bottom of fourth, giving Goldsmith all the support he would need. Saunders reached on a hit-by-pitch to lead off the inning, and advanced to third on a double by Matt Shoemaker. After a Steven Lindemuth sacrifice fly scored Saunders, senior catcher Ben Lenda drove in Shoemaker with an RBI double. Christopher McDougal rounded out the scoring with an RBI single to right field, giving CNU a 4-0 lead.

Lenda added a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning for the Captains to make the final score, 6-0, and Goldsmith closed out the shutout with two perfect innings in the eighth and ninth.

Averett starter Tyler Long was touched up for four runs, three earned in five innings, striking out four. Senior reliever Tyler Muench struck out five in three innings out of the bullpen, giving up three hits and two runs.

The Captains and Cougars will return to action on Sunday at 1:00 pm to close out the regular season series. Live stats and a live video webcast will be available at CNUsports.com
