The St. John Fisher College baseball team defeated No. 6 (Collegiate Baseball) SUNY Cortland 4-3 in nine innings at Dugan Yard on Wednesday afternoon. With the win the Cardinals move to 15-4 on the season while the Red Dragons fall to 16-7-1.

Justin D'Amato earned the victory to move to 5-0 on the season. The starting pitcher went eight innings, allowing just two runs off five hits while striking out eight Cortland batters. Tim Sylvester entered the game for D'Amato in the ninth with a 4-2 lead and battled out of a one-out bases loaded situation to earn his first save of the year.

The Cardinals got on the board in the second inning when Brad Rush grounded out to short scoring Nicholas Flemister. On the play Ben Ward advanced to third and the first baseman over threw the third baseman attempting to throw out the runner, allowing Ward to score. Flemister reached on a fielding error by the second baseman while Ward hit a single through the middle.

Fisher added a run in the fifth with Chris Roeder reaching base on an error by the third baseman. Roeder then advanced to second and third on two separate wild pitches before getting plated by a Peter Krysztof sacrifice fly to center field.

In the eighth inning the Cardinals added their last run. Matt Klock struck out swinging but the pitch got threw the catcher's legs and made it to the backstop, allowing Klock to take the unoccupied first base and Krysztof to score from third.

Fisher will return to action at 4 p.m. on Friday as it travels to face another New York region perennial power, Ithaca College. The Cardinals and Bombers will play a nine inning contest on Friday night and a doubleheader on Saturday.
