Iannone Leads Western Connecticut Baseball To Win At Trinity

Hartford, Conn. – Freshman LHP Alex Iannone (East Hampston, Conn.) pitched a seven-hitter with eight strikeouts to lead the visiting Western Connecticut State University Colonials to a 3-2 victory over the Trinity College Bantams in baseball action this afternoon. Trinity, ranked No. 4 in New England and No. 23 in the nation, drops to 23-9, while the Colonials improve to 14-18.

Western Connecticut scored twice in the second inning on an RBI single by senior Tim Nelson (Manchester, Conn.) and an RBI groundout by sophomore IF Bob Coyne (Clinton, Conn.), but Trinity cut its deficit in half in the third frame thanks to a run-scoring single by senior tri-captain 1B Kevin Mortimer (Spencer, Mass.). The score was stuck at 2-1 until the eighth frame when each team managed an unearned run. Trinity junior reliever Pat Carbone (North Wales, Pa.) and Iannone struck out all six batters of the ninth inning.

Rogers and senior CF David Casanova (Bristol, Conn.) had two hits for Trinity, while freshman southpaw Rob Gau (New Canaan, Conn.), junior RHP Ben Goldberg (Plainview, N.Y.), and Carbone combined to allow seven hits, two earned runs, and four walks with 11 strikeouts. Iannone surrendered two earned runs and four walks. Western Connecticut senior OF Kyle Savo (West Haven, Conn.) went 3-for-4 with an RBI single.
