WAYNE, N.J. – Despite pounding out 11 hits against William Paterson University (26-10) in a non-conference game Tuesday, the State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team (18-18) had only four runs to show for their efforts and suffered a 14-4 loss to the Pioneers.

A three-run homer in the first by Adam Derner opened up a string of five straight William Paterson runs. New Paltz got one back in the third off a sacrifice fly by senior designated hitter Jake Cameron (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side), but the Pioneers exploded for five runs in the third, two in the fourth and two in the sixth to open up a 14-1 lead. Sophomore catcher David Lostaglio (Milton, N.Y./Marlboro Central) pushed across Cameron in the top of the seventh to open up a Hawk scoring spree that ran into the ninth inning.

With two outs in the ninth, senior first baseman Billy Ruggiero (East Northport, N.Y./St. Anthony's) reached on a fielding error by the first baseman, and junior shortstop Steven Morse (East Northport, N.Y./Commack) and senior third baseman Mike Marash (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) came around to score. Senior second baseman Paul Merola (Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y./Cornwall) drew a walk to load the bases, but the Pioneers induced a strikeout to end the game.

Junior pitcher Michael Pinnola (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) was tagged with the loss, giving up 10 runs off nine hits and two walks in three innings of work. Freshman pitcher Roy Missall (Hemlock, N.Y./Honeoye Central) yielded four runs off nine hits in three frames of relief before giving way to senior pitchers John Schmidt (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) and Nick Monaco (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford), each of whom threw a scoreless inning on the mound.

William Paterson's Ryan Monaghan was credited with the win, working six innings and scattering eight hits while permitting just one run. Pete Savastano gave up one run off two hits in two frames of relief, while Joe Moran threw the ninth inning and allowed two unearned runs.

Cameron and Morse each batted 2-for-4 with a run scored, while William Paterson was led by Scott Ptaszynski (4-for-5, three RBI, one run scored), Mike Arnold (3-for-4, two runs scored), Ryan Gibbons (3-for-5, three runs scored, one RBI), Jack Montanile (2-for-4, four RBI, two runs scored, one home run), Anthony Dorio (2-for-3, one run scored) and Derner (2-for-3, three RBI, one run scored, one home run)

New Paltz finishes its 2012 slate against seventh-ranked SUNY Cortland, which it contests from Friday-Saturday, April 27-28, in Cortland, N.Y. The Hawks open the series with a single nine-inning game against the Red Dragons at 3 p.m. on Friday.
