Adrian Wins MIAA Tournament Opener 2-0 over Albion

ADRIAN, Mich. - The Adrian College baseball team won their opening game of the 2012 MIAA Tournament on Wednesday afternoon with a 2-0 win over Albion College at Nicolay Field. Senior pitcher Jason Fryman (Dowagiac, Mich.) was the story of the game as he tied a career-high with nine innings on the mound and threw his second career shutout and first this season. Fryman gave up just four hits and walked three during his 127-pitch outing. He struck out six hitters and lowered his season ERA to 1.99 in the process.

Adrian's offense came from the bottom third of the order in this one. Mike Herzog hitting in the eight-spot went 2-for-3 with his eighth double and first triple of the season. He scored once and also drove in a run. Cody Meyer hitting in the nine-spot of the lineup went 1-for-3 with an RBI single in the second inning. Herzog's triple came in the fourth and allowed Jamey Sackett to score from second base.

Andrew DeLuca collected his 10th double of the season in three at-bats. Sam Fischer and Kyle Strawn also each had a single as Adrian collected six hits off Albion starter Mike Schypinski. Schypinski went 7.1 innings and allowed two earned runs with two walks and seven strikeouts. He threw 129 pitches and was replaced by Ross Hall in the eighth.

Fryman tied a single-season school record with his 10th victory of the season (10-1). He also threw his seventh complete game of 2012 and opponents are hitting just .207 against him this season.

The Bulldogs (33-8) will now face Trine University (25-16) in a winner's bracket game tomorrow morning at 10:00 AM. The top two seeds just recently faced each other in a four-game series to conclude the regular season and split the matchup 2-2. Trine defeated Hope, 6-3, on Wednesday in Angola, Indiana in the other opening round game of the MIAA Tournament.
