Fisher’s Jason Beaumont tosses a gem in upset of No. 1 Marietta

MARIETTA, Ohio - St. John Fisher senior Jason Beaumont has pitched in some big games in front of some big crowds before.

But throwing a complete-game in a 5-2 victory over top-ranked Marietta in front of more than 1,000 fans at the 2012 NCAA Division III Mideast Regional at Don Schaly Stadium ranks right up there among his highlights.

"First year of college I played in the Junior College World Series (for Monroe Community College)," said Beaumont, who improved to 7-4 on the season. "I thought the atmosphere here was different. … I was able to feed off of it and use it for motivation."

Beaumont was a starter for Division II Lynn University last season, where he went 7-3. Now he's helped the Cardinals (31-10) reach a power position in the regional as one of only two undefeated teams heading into Friday's action.

And he did it with a dominating performance. He scattered eight hits, struck out three and walked one in the victory. Beaumont allowed a run in the first inning and another one in the ninth.

St. John Fisher coach Brandon Potter said it was a typical Beaumont showing.

"When Jason pitches he's lights out. That's what we expect from him because he's that good of a pitcher," Potter said. "We knew they were going to be a tough team to play and that's why we wanted him to throw against them."

Beaumont ran into a little trouble in the ninth inning when he gave up back-to-back singles, but Potter never considered going to the bullpen.

"He's a horse. He's built to do it. We knew we'd get eight or nine out of him," Potter said.

Marietta coach Brian Brewer was impressed with what he saw from Beaumont, especially in front the partisan Pioneer crowd.

"He's just good. He's a fastball guy with a good change up. He went to his change up in some 2-2 situations. Any time someone has the confidence to do that it shows that he's a pretty good pitcher," Brewer said. "He threw well, they played well and they beat us in all phases."

St. John Fisher took an early 2-0 lead with two hits, a walk and a hit batter on Marietta (38-7) starter Brian Gasser (9-3) in the first inning.

"We knew he'd probably pound the zone on us early, so we wanted to look fastball," Potter said. "We knew he was good and we had never seen him before. We faced a lot of No. 1s this year and a lot of good pitchers so we know what we're doing."

Brewer said they pulled Gasser after the sixth inning because he had thrown around 85 pitches.

St. John was clinging to a 2-1 lead when it manufactured two runs in the seventh off reliever Logan Lewis. The big hit was a double by center fielder Sean Osterman. The Cardinals added another run in the eighth on Peter Krysztof's RBI single off of Luke Langdon.

Marietta designated hitter Josh Ungerbuehler had another big outing as he went 3-for-4 with an RBI.

"Once we wake up tomorrow, today is done but they need to think about today to make sure this doesn't happen again," Brewer said. "We got to be better for the experience win, lose or draw."

Marietta is back in action at 9:30 a.m. Friday against Washington & Jefferson. St. John Fisher faces the winner of Adrian vs. Manchester at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
