Caltech snapped a 228-game losing skid with a 9-7 win over Pacifica on Saturday afternoon in the second game of a doubleheader. Caltech last posted an NCAA baseball win on Feb. 15, 2003 when they beat CSU-Monterey Bay 5-4.


GAME TWO – Caltech 9, Pacifica 7

After Caltech jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning then held a 4-0 after four innings, Pacifica mounted a rally.

The Gladiators plated seven in the fifth inning to seemingly grab all the game's momentum racking up six hits and taking advantage of two Caltech errors. However, a determined Beavers squad responded.

In the sixth inning Caltech had the first four batters reach base. Caltech ultimately took the lead for good when Derek Kearney singled home Albie Lavin. The Beavers added an insurance run when Mason Freedman singled home Kearny with two outs.

Caltech's initial lead came when they scored three runs with two outs in the first inning. The Beavers tacked on a solo run when Ryan Casey scored on a Lavin sacrifice fly.

Daniel Chou threw a complete game in grabbing the win in his first collegiate start. He held the Gladiators hitless through 4.1 innings and struck out two.

At the plate Brian Penserini went 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. Jerome Skelly also went 3-for-4 while scoring twice and driving in another.

GAME ONE – Pacifica 5, Caltech 0

Aaron Soto threw a complete game four-hit shutout to pace the Gladiators to the game one win. He struck out four and faced 27 batters.

Pacifica plated a run in the first inning when John Marriott crossed the plate when Luis Martinez reached on an error. Derek Kearney and the Beavers defense shut down the Gladiators offense until the sixth inning.

The visitors put a four-spot on the board to help them seal the win.

Kearney went six innings and struck out two while giving up six hits on the mound. At the plate he was 2-for-3.
