Rhodes Opens Season with 11-6 Victory

The Rhodes College baseball teamed kicked of the 2013 season by defeating visiting Victory University 11-6. Rhodes jumped out to an early 1-0 as Sophomore OF Andrew Wallis hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the first. Victory scored 5 in the top of the second, but Rhodes would take the lead for good with an eight run bottom of the fifth. Senior RHP Jackson Baker collected his first victory of the season working two innings out of the bullpen.

Senior RHP got the opening day start on the mound for the Lynx working the first two frames. Burnick passed the ball over to freshman LHP Adam Putnam as he made his collegiate debut in the third. Putnam allowed one hit and struck out one. Baker worked the fourth and fifth for the Lynx, allowing one hit and striking out two. Sophomores Thomas Beamish and Blake Harrell, seniors Stuart Voges and James Todd would each see an inning of work to finish off the game.

Switch hitting Andrew Wallis led the Lynx offensive attack going 2-3 with two homeruns, one from each side of the plate, two runs scored, 3 RBIs, and got hit by a pitch. Freshman SS Bill Munson was 2-3 with a double, run scored, stole two bases, and got hit by a pitch. Junior LF Walker McWherter was 2-4 with a run scored and drove in a run. Junior DH Strother White was 1-2 with 2 RBIs and scored a run.

The Lynx will return to action on Saturday as they travel to Jackson, MS to take Huntingdon College at 3:00.
