Pioneers Take DH From Caltech

LANCASTER, CA – The Caltech baseball team traveled to the University of Antelope Valley on Saturday for a non-conference doubleheader.

The Pioneers swept the two-game set by scores of 8-0 and 11-6.

Game One – UAV 8, Caltech 0

The Pioneers strung together 13 hits in posting the seven-inning victory. They plated a single run in the first inning then busted open the game with a five-run third inning.

The game was put out of reach when the Pioneers scored two more runs in the fifth inning.

Zach Monticelli went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI's to pace the home team's offense.

Derek Kearney threw a complete game for the Beavers. He struck out a personal best seven in six innings of work.

Game Two – UAV 11, Caltech 6

A four-run first inning continued the momentum the home team built after the first game. The Pioneers added to that tally with a two-run third and then a five-run sixth.

Caltech continued to fight. The Beavers plated five runs in the eighth inning. A Brian Penserini two-run triple highlighted the high scoring inning. Scott Yantek knocked in two as well in that frame. The Beavers plated a single run in the final inning when Mason Freedman scored on a wild pitch.

Daniel Chou worked six innings on the mound and struck out three before leaving way to Oliver Curtiss who came in and struck out two.

The game was played at Clear Channel Stadium, home of the single-A affiliate for the Houston Astros.
