Saints Open 2013 Season With a 6-1 Win Over Loras

(AUBURNDALE, Fla.) - The Thomas More College baseball team opened the 2013 season today (Monday, March 4, 2013) with a 6-1 win over Loras College on the first day of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational at the Lake Myrtle Complex in Auburndale, Florida.

With the win, the Saints are 1-0 and with the loss, Loras is 3-3.

Thomas More scored a run in the fourth, one in the fifth, three in the sixth and one in the seventh, while holding Loras to one run in the fifth.

Senior pitcher Grant Lewis (Mason, Ohio/Mason) earned the win on the mound as he pitched six innings and gave up one earned run, while striking out seven.  Freshman Kyle Fuller (Taylor Mill, Ky./Holy Cross) pitched the seventh and gave up one hit and struck out one, while junior Andy Roenker (Taylor Mill, Ky./Holy Cross) pitched the eighth and struck out one and senior David Etscheid (Union, Ky./Ryle) pitched a scoreless ninth.

At the plate, four Saints finished with multiple hits.  Senior shortstop David Kennett (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City) was two-for-five with a double and a run batted-in, senior designated hitter Ryan Darner (Burlington, Ky./Covington Catholic) was two-for-four, junior third baseman Travis Miller (Erlanger, Ky./St. Henry) was two-for-four with a double and a triple, junior right fielder Cody Makin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was two-for-four with a double, a triple and a RBI and junior first baseman Craig Hyson (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) was two-for-four with a double and a two RBI.

The Saints return to action in the Central Florida Invitational tomorrow (Tuesday, March 5) when they play Trine University in an in-region doubleheader.  First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. on field No. 4 at the Lake Myrtle Complex in Auburndale.
