WINTER HAVEN, FL (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | New Jersey City University scored four runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by a two-run triple by senior left fielder ANDREW RIVERA (Edison, NJ/Edison) and received solid pitching from the trio of junior left-hander ZACK MARKLE (Hoboken, NJ/Hoboken), junior lefty PEDRO GARCIA (North Bergen, NJ/Saint Joseph of the Palisades) and sophomore right-hander KEVIN DEMAURO (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) as NJCU improved to 2-0 on its spring break trip with a 5-3 win over Medaille College on March 10 at Chain of Lakes Park Field #2.

NJCU (5-4) moves above .500 for the first time this season and the first time since March 27, 2002. Medaille falls to 1-1. The Mavericks scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings after NJCU gained a 1-0 lead after three frames.

Markle improved to 3-2 in his career by winning his first start of the season (1-0) and retired the first 10 batters of the game in order. In six innings, he allowed three earned runs against six hits, with three strikeouts without issuing a walk over 65 pitches.

Garcia threw 2.1 innings of hitless baseball in relief and maintained a perfect 0.00 ERA in 10.2 innings over five appearances this season. The lefty did walk two batters and hit a pair over 33 pitches, but didn't allow a run. DeMauro relieved Garcia after a one-out walk in the bottom of the ninth and retired the final two batters for his first save of the year and second of his career.
