ANGOLA, Ind. – Albion College tumbled out of a share of first place in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association baseball standings after suffering 4-0 and 10-0 losses to Trine University at Jannen Field.

The Britons still managed a split of the four-game series with the Thunder by taking the Friday games at Frank Joranko Field by scores 8-2 and 5-4.

Albion, which hit .339 in its first six league contests, managed just three hits in the two games Saturday. Kyle Kowal, Eric Shimmel and Ben Gehan singled in game one.

Albion squandered a scoring chance early in game one. Shimmel drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. Shimmel took third on Michael Fischbach's sacrifice bunt. B.J. Konkle was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners with one out, but the next two Briton batters were unable to hit the ball out of the infield.

Trine scored a run in the bottom of the second. It tacked on two more runs in the third and a single run in the fourth.

Trine pitcher Phil Stakely no-hit the Britons in game two. Stakely hit Kowal with a pitch in the first inning and Michael Fischbach walked in the second. Alex Schumaker and Davin Montgomery also reached base on errors by Trine infielders. Albion never moved a runner past second base in game two.

Albion's road doesn't get easier as it faces defending league champion Adrian College in its next four-game MIAA series. The teams begin the series with a 1 p.m. Saturday doubleheader at Albion's Frank Joranko Field.
