Providence, R.I.-Freshman third baseman Richard Fecteau (Newbury, MA) scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch in the top of the fifth inning as the Salem State baseball team upended Rhode Island College, 1-0, in rain-shortened action on Monday afternoon at Anchorman Field.

Salem State improved its record to 7-8, while Rhode Island College falls to 4-15. The game was called after five innings due to inclement weather.

Following four scoreless innings, Fecteau reached on an error to open the top of the fifth. After a sacrifice bunt by junior catcher Mike Lamothe (Beverly, MA) advanced Fecteau to second, sophomore shortstop Ryan Beliveau (Lynn, MA) slapped an infield single to first base to move Fecteau to third. Moments later, Fecteau scampered home on a wild pitch to score what proved to be the game-winning run.

RIC threatened in the bottom of the fifth, but were unable to plate the tying run.

Senior right-hander Ryan Sharp (Townsend, MA) earned the win (2-0) after striking out four and conceding just three hits and one walk in five shutout innings.

Sophomore right-hander Dylan Cummiskey (Warwick, RI) was tagged with the loss (0-3), despite allowing just one unearned run on two hits and two walks, while striking out five in five frames.

Sophomore left fielder Dean Grasso (Cranston, RI), junior designated hitter Alex Verrecchia (Cranston, RI) and senior right fielder Kyle Mann (West Warwick, RI) each recorded hits for the Anchormen.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College hosts Worcester State on Tuesday afternoon (3:30 p.m.) in non-conference action.
