PURCHASE, N.Y. – Junior Joe Pareres (Bronxville, N.Y./Fordham Prep) pitched 6 1/3 innings of two-run ball, while four of Manhattanville's nine starters collected three or more hits to propel the team to a 12-3 conference victory over the Delaware Valley Aggies on Thursday afternoon at Manhattanville Field.

Senior Sean Ferguson (Astoria, N.Y./Xavier) led the offense with four hits, while classmate Johnny LoVetere (Southbury, Conn./Canterbury), junior Hans Arias (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond) and freshman Jordanis Nunez (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond) collected three each of their own. Ferguson and sophomore Bobby Guerra (Bronx, N.Y./Arlington) led the team with two RBI each, while Ferguson, LoVetere and sophomore Kevin Brady (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep) each scored two runs in the lopsided victory.

Pareres went to the hill in search of his second win of the season and worked around a one-out error before returning to the dugout with an energized attitude. His expression carried over to the offense in the bottom of the first, where Manhattanville cashed in for three runs.

Sophomore Nick Euvino (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) got the bats going with a one-out single, and advanced to second after nearly being picked off before a throwing error allowed him to reach second safely, he then stole third with LoVetere batting. LoVetere was hit by a pitch and then promptly stole second, before he and Euvino advanced to third and home on a balk. Ferguson then laced a ground-rule double down the left field line to bring around LoVetere. Two batters later, Guerra collected a single to centerfield to put the home team up by three in the first inning.

In the top of the second, Delaware Valley picked up its first run of the game as they collected a pair of base knocks around a wild pitch to score Brandon Bell.

Manhattanville manufactured a run in the next inning to regain its three-run lead as senior John Bucci (Port Chester, N.Y./Port Chester) singled then stole second and third before coming in on a double deep down the right field line by Nunez.

Both teams went down without much of a threat in the third and fourth innings as Pareres and Delaware Valley starter Jake Richard exchanged a pair of scoreless innings.

In the bottom of the fifth, Manhattanville added a few more runs to the scoreboard as Brady got things started with a one out walk. Guerra and Arias reached on singles to load the bases full of Valiants to bring up Bucci, who walked to force in a run. Up next was junior Elias Tsouristakis (New Rochelle, N.Y./Fordham Prep), who reached on a fielding error by the second baseman to plate a pair of runners.

Delaware Valley went to the bullpen in the bottom of the sixth and the offense continued to roll as LoVetere, Ferguson and Brady all reached to load the bases with no outs. Guerra hit a sacrifice fly to plate one run followed by Arias singling to plate another run. Arias played a big role on the next play as he got caught in a six-player rundown which allowed Brady to scamper home with Manhattanville's 10th run of the game.

Pareres continued into the top of the seventh inning and allowed a leadoff single, then threw a wild pitch to allow the runner into scoring position. Pareres got the next batter to ground out before giving way to the bullpen and junior Spencer Samelson (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck), who allowed the inherited runner to score via groundout and got the next batter on a ground ball as well.

The offense put up another crooked number in the bottom half of the frame as Tsouristakis got things started with a double down the left field line, Nunez doubled but pinch-runner Jake McGrath (Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane) needed to hold as the outfielder lost the ball in the setting sun behind the third base dugout. LoVetere then doubled to plate one, followed by an infield single for Ferguson to plate the 12th and final run for the Valiants on the day.

Samelson allowed one more run in the top of the eighth inning but got out of any further damage, and also worked his way in-and-out of trouble in the top of the ninth without allowing a run to cap off the game.

Earning the win was Pareres (2-1), after going 6 1/3 innings of six hit ball while allowing a pair of runs and also striking out two. Samelson came on to finish the game and allowed one run on four hits over his 2 2/3 innings worth of work. Taking the loss was Richard (1-4) after allowing seven runs (five earned) on 12 hits, while striking out three Valiant batters. Kevin Cahill pitched three innings of relief allowing five more runs on seven hits with one strikeout.

Manhattanville (4-13, 2-5 Freedom) will continue its three-game series with a doubleheader against Delaware Valley (7-9, 1-5 Freedom) tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. before taking a brief hiatus for the holiday weekend.
