Marinelli Leads Scranton Past No. 9 Ramapo, 8-2

MAHWAH, N.J. – Senior right-hander Matt Marinelli (Westbury, N.Y./Holy Trinity) tossed a complete game and The University of Scranton baseball team scored four times in the seventh inning to take control and knock off ninth-ranked Ramapo College, 8-2, on Tuesday afternoon. 

Marinelli allowed single runs in the first and fourth innings and finished allowing 11 hits and two walks while striking out two. He picked up his second complete game of the season while despite his scoreless innings streak ending at nine.

The Royals (16-10) got stellar defense from third baseman Mike Trabulsi (Malverne, N.Y./Chaminde), who made a handful of standout plays in the field and also went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. His two-run single in the top of the ninth put the game away. 

Ramapo, which is ranked ninth in the D3baseball.com Top 25, led 2-0 after four innings, but Marinelli shut down the Roadrunners (16-4) from there as the Royals' offense went to work. They scored one in the sixth on an RBI single by senior right fielder Greg Monastra (West Chester, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara), then took the lead with the four-run seventh inning.

Sophomore first baseman Ross Danzig (Clarks Green, Pa./Abington Heights/Blair Academy, N.J.) knotted the score with an RBI single and senior shortstop Tim LeCompte (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic) followed with a bases-loaded walk to put Scranton ahead, 3-2. Junior center fielder Michael Gaeta (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) then singled to left to drive in a run and freshman left fielder Ray Grapsy (Covington Township, Pa./North Pocono) added a sacrifice fly to make it 5-2. 

After Marinelli stranded two runners in the seventh, the Royals added a run in the eighth when Trabulsi scored on a wild pitch. His two-run single in the ninth capped the scoring.

Danzig, who scored a run, and sophomore second baseman Matt Maghini (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) each had two hits. Freshman catcher Dominick Gulius (Laflin, Pa./Coughlin) had a single and made a stellar defensive play on a pop up to end the Ramapo half of the seventh inning. 

The Royals return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Huntingdon, Pa. for a Landmark Conference game against Juniata.
